The cloth care system is a novel kind of home appliances that uses steam and heat pump to refresh (dust removal, deodorization, and wrinkle reduction) and sterilize cloth. Since the steam reduces wrinkle of clothes, it is necessary to inject steam to the inner case of the cloth care system. However, the steam injection affects the heat pump cycle to dry the clothes. Therefore, in this study, the effect of steam injection time on a heat pump cycle for a cloth care system was investigated. The steam injection time was controlled from 0 to 8 min while the heat pump was operated under the same conditions to check the effect of the steam injection time on the heat pump cycle. As a result, when the steam injection time increased by 1 min, the air temperature of evaporator inlet increased by 2 °C in average owing to the latent and sensible heat of the injected steam. The amount of heat transfer in the evaporator and condenser increased 27.5% and 34.7%, respectively, as the steam injection time increased from 0 to 8 min. In addition, the time required to reach 40 °C of inner case temperature decreased from 1494 to 199 s as the steam injection time increased from 0 to 8 min. This research is helpful to the researchers developing optimal algorithms of cloth care systems.
