        맥켄지 운동이 젊은 성인의 호흡 기능과 호흡근에 미치는 즉각적인 효과

        Purpose: Habitual abnormal postures, such as forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and decreased lumbar lordosis, can adversely affect respiratory function by limiting thoracic rib cage expansion and lung capacity. This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of a single session of Mckenzie exercises on respiratory function and respiratory muscle. Methods: Eighteen young adults (mean age, 24.22 ± 2.415), including 4 men and 14 women, participated in the study. Spirometry tests were conducted before and after the single exercise session, which consisted of two types of Mckenzie exercises performed in 20 repetitions each. Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were measured to evaluate respiratory function, and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured to assess respiratory muscle strength. Paired-sample t-tests were employed to analyze the significance of respiratory measurements pre- and post-Mckenzie exercises, with a significance level set at 0.05. Results: A significant increase in MIP was found after Mckenzie exercises (p=.012), indicating improved inspiratory muscle strength. However, no significant changes were observed in FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF, and MEP. Conclusion: Mckenzie exercises, designed to stretch respiratory muscles and correct thoracic rib cage alignment through spinal extension, demonstrated an immediate positive effect on MIP. Therefore, Mckenzie exercises could be considered a valuable chest expansion exercise in respiratory rehabilitation programs. More studies are warranted to explore the potential long-term effects of Mckenzie exercises on respiratory function and respiratory muscle strength.

        Study of Textual Features in English Composition by Korean and German College Students

        This study tests the validity of contrastive rhetoric by comparing Korean and German college students’ rhetorical styles. 23 Korean and 22 German college students’ essays about the influence of American or British culture on their life were examined for their study. The results show the Korean students use different rhetorical styles than what is by Kaplan and other contrastive rhetoric proponents. However, digression emerges as the distinctive feature of German rhetoric in some of the German students’ essays as previous studies claim. Unlike the Korean students’ essays in which any particular rhetorical style does not emerge, those by the German students show a pattern of repetitive coordination and a simpler hierarchical structure resulting from limited relation types between idea units.

        Influence of Home Based Exercise Intensity on the Aerobic Capacity and 1 Year Re-Hospitalization Rate in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure

        Purpose: This study investigated the effects of home-based exercise intensity on the aerobic capacity and 1 year re-hospitalization rate in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods: Forty seven patients with CHF (males 33, females 14, age 61.3±9.8 years) participated in this study. The patients were allocated randomly to 3 groups in accordance with home-based exercise intensity: no home based exercise (NHE, 40%, n=19), moderate intensity home-based exercise (MIHE, 43%, n=20), and high intensity home based exercise (HIHE, 17%, n=8). All patients completed the symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise (CPX) test safely at the cardiac rehabilitation hospital. Results: The NHE group significantly showed lower peak VO2 and a higher VE/VCO2 slope than the MIHE (p<0.05) and HIHE (p<0.01) groups. On the other hand, the NHE group did not show significant differences in the other hemodynamic responses, such as heart rate (HR) max, HR reserve, maximal systolic blood pressure (SBP), and SBP reserve. Nine out of 19 NHE patients (47%) were re-hospitalized related to heart disease and two out of 20 MIHE (10%) patients were re-hospitalized, but nobody in the HIHE group were re-hospitalized within 1 year from the CPX test. Conclusion: In patients with CHF, home-based self-exercise is one of the important factors for reducing the re-hospitalization rate. In addition, improved aerobic capacity is strongly associated with a lower re-hospitalization rate. In particular, re-hospitalized CHF patients showed significant differences in respiratory parameters and hemodynamic parameters compared to the non-re-hospitalized patients.

        College Students' Revision Behaviors: Are they Motivated by the Inner-drive or Teacher Feedback?

        In a process-oriented English writing classroom where students are required to revise their papers before submission, teacher feedback should play an important role in guiding their revisions. However, it is not clear how this feedback is read by the students and what motivates them to ignore it or integrate it into their revisions. This study attempts to explore students’ revision-related decision-making processes. To this aim, students’ writing samples in the context of a multiple-draft writing process, the instructor’s feedback, and the data from interviews with the teacher and her students were collected and analyzed. The results of the study indicate the influence of the feedback was not as great as expected and students often revised their papers solely based on their independent decisions. However, this did not mean teacher feedback did not play a role in the process. The quality of the feedback was a critical factor in deciding whether and to what extent it was integrated into revisions. Particularly, the students suffered from difficulties in understanding vague comments and responding to inappropriate comments about their English and writing skill development. These results bear some pedagogical recommendations, including the provision of clear and appropriate feedback regarding students’ levels of writing and English development and the avoidance of excessive comments.

        What’s the Problem in Teaching English Writing in Secondary Level?

        Although English writing is equally important to other language skills in many areas of communication with foreigners, it has not been fairly treated in secondary school English classrooms. In this context, this study intends to investigate how English writing instruction is practiced in the classroom and what shapes the instruction. 94 middle and high school teachers were surveyed on their English writing teaching practices and their opinions on teaching English writing in the classroom. Further, 14 English textbooks for seventh through eleventh graders were analyzed. The major finding of the study is that most teachers and their students had negative opinions on teaching and learning of English writing skills. The reason behind the negative opinion is that English writing is not practically helpful in the students’ pursuit of academic success in secondary school, that is, earning admission to college. Moreover, the teaching practices and textbooks are not adequate to developing students’ English communicative abilities through written English. This study strongly recommends the inclusion of English writing skills in tests in school and class level and the accompanying instructional changes for the improvement of the current English writing teaching practices. Administrative supports and providing the teachers with proper resources and training programs are strongly needed in this regard.

        Negotiation of Meaning in Peer Revision Sessions in a College English Composition Classroom

        Peer revision provides English writing learners with a collaborative learning experience in which they discuss problems in the text with their peers for its revision. It is assumed in the revision activity that successful negotiation of meaning among peers is critical for the successful revision of the text. For the purpose of examining how meaning is negotiated in peer revision sessions, this study was conducted for Korean college EFL writing learners. They were asked to revise their papers with the peers twice for each of their writing assignments. Their meaning-negotiation process in the class was recorded, transcribed and analyzed for the study, and five episodes, which clearly represent the negotiation process, were selected and presented in the study. Among the factors that influence the negotiation are their ability to provide and determine valid feedback for revision, the writer's authorship, and stances each student takes toward the peers identified as important factors influencing the interaction and the successful completion of the task. This study also identified the need for examining the interaction between the readers as an area for further research.

      • 영어교육에 있어서 새로운 문화교육 방향의 제시

        언어와 문화는 불가분의 관계인 것처럼 외국어 교육에서의 학생들의 의사소통 능력의 발달을 위한 외국 문화의 소개는 너무도 당연하다고 하겠다. 교통, 통신 수단의 발달에 따라 영어가 영어를 모국어로 사용하는 원어민과의 의사소통만을 위한 언어가 아니라 모국어가 같지 않은 외국인끼리의 의사소통을 위한 국제어가 됨에 따라 우리와 접촉이 잦은 외국인들의 문화를 영어 교과서에 소개할 필요성을 본 연구는 제기하고 있다. 이러한 주장을 뒷받침하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 외국 여행객들의 행선지 및 행선지에서의 언어 사용에 대한 간단한 조사를 실시하였다. 조사 결과 비영어권 국가로 여행을 하는 많은 여행객들이 사용가능한 외국어는 영어 하나이며 여행지에서 주된 언어로 영어를 사용할 계획이라고 응답하였다. 이러한 조사 결과는 비영어권 국가들의 문화가 적극적으로 영어교과서에 소개되어야 된다는 당위성을 나타내고 있다하겠다. 또한 문화에 대한 교육이 실제 영어교육에 어떻게 반영되고 있는 지를 조사하기 위하여 실시된 고등학교 공통영어 5종에 대한 조사는 문화에 대한 교육이 바람직한 형태로 시행되고 있지 않음을 확인시켜 주었다. 즉 교과서에서 문화적인 내용을 다룰 수 있는 읽기 지문에서 영어권 문화 및 문화적인 요소가 결여된 내용이 대다수를 차지하고 있었으며 또한 학생들의 문화적인 이해를 돕기보다는 문화의 표면적인 내용만을 다루고 있는 경우가 많았다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 본 연구는 문화의 표면적인 내용보다는 문화의 심층적인 내용을 다루어 학생들의 문화에 대한 이해의 정도를 높일 필요가 있으며, 우리 문화에 대한 학생들의 이해를 제고하여 외국 문화의 이해에 대한 기초를 마련할 필요가 있으며, 국제어로서의 영어의 역할을 이해하여 비영어권 문화를 보다 적극적으로 그리고 올바른 방향으로 영어교과서에 소개할 필요성을 제기하였다.

        초등학교 영어교육에 있어서 평가의 당위성과 과제

        Although testing is closely related to teaching and improvement in learning, English tests in Korean elementary English classrooms have not established any solid ground for their practice. This is due to the fact that the 7th English curriculum of the Department of Education does not mandate elementary school teachers to administer formal English tests, along with many other practical constraints. This study assumes that evaluation is a critical component in elementary English education, and investigates practices related to implementation and evaluation in the classroom and teachers' opinions on the issue. This investigation was carried out by conducting a survey of 58 elementary teachers. The findings confirm the shaky ground for the current assessment practices and identify a number of problems. This study concludes by offering two solutions to the problems, the rigorous application of informal evaluation methods and the improvement and reinforcement of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs.

        The statistical observation on the hemoglobin, red cell count and cell volume of army soldiers in comparison with the value of the lower urban class and rural peoples was made, and the following results were obtained.
