As concerns regarding water pollution grow, the need increases for a fast and accurate assessment of ecological risk. In this context, many studies have been conducted to identify biomarkers which can sensitively indicate exposure to and effects of various contaminants in a water environment. However, the utility of most such biomarkers in the real water environment is not yet validated. In this paper, we conducted a thorough review of publications that were related to developing or evaluating molecular and biochemical biomarkers of freshwater fish in ecological risk assessment, and evaluated whether these biomarkers of interest could link to the effects on higher biological levels, such as histopathology and above. Biomarkers of interest included those associated with metabolism, oxidative stress, reproduction and endocrine disruption, genotoxicity, and defense against heavy metal exposure. We found that, when used alone, most molecular and biochemical biomarkers are not sufficient to understand the effects of toxic substances in higher biological levels, due to defense or acclimation mechanisms of organisms. Moreover, some biomarkers respond not only to hazardous substances but also to the changes in water quality and disease outbreak. Molecular and biochemical biomarkers may be most useful in understanding the potential biological effects of toxic compounds when used in parallel with relevant endpoints of higher biological levels.

With different seed adhesion methods, we obtained two different aspects with or without micro-bubble in the interface between a seed and a dense graphite seed holder. To improve the quality of SiC wafer, we introduced a sucrose caramelizing step at the seed adhesion using the sucrose, The n-type 2 inch single crystal exhibiting the polytype of 6H-SiC were successfully fabricated and carrier concentration levels of about $10^{16}/cm^3$ was determined from Hall measurements, As compared to the characteristics of SiC crystal grown with micro-bubble in the interface between the seed and the dense graphite seed holder, the SiC crystal grown without micro-bubble definitely exhibited lower resistivity, lower micropipe density and higher mobility relatively.
OECD QSAR Application Toolbox를 이용한 화학물질의 건강유해성 및 생태독성 예측

Objectives: The OECD QSAR Application Toolbox was developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to facilitate the practical use of QSAR approaches in regulatory contexts as well as to reduce the need for additional animal testing. In this study, human health and the ecotoxicity of chemicals were predicted by applying the OECD QSAR Application Toolbox and the results were compared with experimental data in order to evaluate the applicability of this program. Methods: Read-across, trend analysis, and QSAR of OECD QSAR Application Toolbox were used for the prediction of toxicity. Results: The toxicity prediction was conducted on 6,354 chemicals for which toxicity data have been produced on the six endpoints of skin sensitization, skin irritation, eye irritation, mutagenicity, and acute toxicities of fish and Daphnia. From the total of 6,354, we obtained prediction results for 1,621 chemicals (25.5%). Conclusions: The predicted properties of mutagenicity, skin sensitization, and acute aquatic toxicities were reasonably good when compared with experimental data, but other endpoints were not due to the limitation of applicable chemical groups.

Two genera of the plant bug in the subfamily Mirinae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) are newlyreported from the Korean Peninsula with discoveries of Tolongia pilosa Yasunaga, 1991 and Yamatolygusinsulanus Yasunaga, 1994. The male genital structure of T. pilosa is remarked. Female genitalia ofY. insulanus is described for the first time. Morphological information such as diagnoses is also provided.
