Data Segmentation for a Better Prediction of Quality in a Multi-stage Process

There may be several parallel equipments having the same function in a multi-stage manufacturing process, which affect the product quality differently and have significant differences in defect rate. The product quality may depend on what equipments it has been processed as well as what process variable values it has. Applying one model ignoring the presence of different equipments may distort the prediction of defect rate and the identification of important quality variables affecting the defect rate. We propose a procedure for data segmentation when constructing models for predicting the defect rate or for identifying major process variables influencing product quality. The proposed procedure is based on the principal component analysis and the analysis of variance, which demonstrates a better performance in predicting defect rate through a case study with a PDP manufacturing process.

Traditional clustering is regarded as an unsupervised learning to analyze unlabeled data. Semi-supervised clustering uses a small amount of labeled data to predict labels of unlabeled data as well as to improve clustering performance. Previous methods use constraints generated from available labeled data in clustering process. We propose a new constraint-based semi-supervised clustering method by reflecting initial predicted labels of unlabeled data. We evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed method in terms of classification errors through numerical experiments with blinded labeled data.

Micropenis is defined as a normally formed penis with a size greater than 2 standard deviations below the mean. Twenty three patients with micropenis were managed at Soonchunhyang University Hospital from January 1988 to December 1995 We interviewed and examined them with micropenis to investigate the cause of micropenis, concomitant diseases, the efficacy of treatment and their sexual activity in postpubertal men. The patients were divided into 2 groups: 16 prepubertal and 7 postpubertal men. 9 patients had cryptorchidism, 3 of them were bilateral and 5 patients had hypospadias. Etiology was determined by hormonal assay including HCG stimulation test ; 8 as hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, 4 as primary testicular dysfunction and 5 as idiopathic. However etiology was undetermined in 6 patients. All patients had endocrine therapy using HCG or depot testosterone. All except 4 cases responded satisfactorily. All postpubertal patients(group 2) were below the 10th percentile. Puberty was delayed in 3 patients in the older group. All patients were heterosexual and they have had erections and orgasms. Five patients have had ejaculations, 3 of them were sexually active and they have experienced vaginal penetration, Nevertheless, their sexual partners have had complaints and the patients themselves have felt ashamed and dissatisfied. Fortunately, they were mentally healthy. None of these patients were married or had a child.

Today, the need for mandible reconstruction surgery has greater emphsis than ever before. This was largely due to traumatic accidents and tumor happening in this highly developed society. The interest in mandible reconstruction became a research subject in the late 19th and the early 20th century. The mandible reconstruction had greatly progressed through the 1st and 2nd World Wars. "Free Fibular Bone Graft", the latest interest, was first reported by Taylor in 1975. This method has used by many maxillofacial reconstructive surgeons since dosens of cases in extensive mandible reconstruction reported by D. Hidage in 1988. In this class, "Free Fibular Osteo-cutaneous Flap" was performed after removing large portion of mandible due to squamous cell cancer in oral cavity. In the procedure of the "Free Fibular Bone Graft", the vein of the flap showed the ischemic condition with recanalization accompanying the deep vein thrombosis in the normal proximal vein. So, this made it necessary to perform operation on microvascular anastomosis of reverse venous flow (anastomosis with distal vein of the fibula free flap). Microvascular anastomosis operation using reversed flow of distal veine was used to resolve this problem. Therefore we report out successful operation of the : "Free Fibular osteo-cutaneous Flap"

Today, the facial bone fractures have been increased by traffic accidents or industrial injuries. Especially, thy zygoma fracture, which the plastic and reconstructive surgeons are faced with, is the second common problem in mid-facial injury. This study is for the application of computerized tomography(CT) scan to diagnosis clinical treatment, instead of conventional radiography. The classification using CT scan is done with definitive fracture line, operative field, and accurate internal fixation. By CT scan, fifty-four patients with the zygoma fracture, except the simple blow-our fracture, are investigated to analyze the pattern of displacement and direction of the facial bone fracture. This study shows the following conclusions : 1. The zygoma fractures are classified into five types, according to the anatomaical fracture sites and the displacement of fragments. 2. The CT scan shows that it confirms the fracture line, the anatomical displacement, and the relationship between zygoma and facial bone and soft tissue. 3. It is easily selected to operability and operative incision methods, according to the classification by CT scan. 4. Clinically, it is easily applicated to accurate diagnosis and treatment by this classification. Compared with the conventional radiography, this methods demonstrates that it is possible to establish the definitive diagnosis and the accurate clinical treatment of zygoma fracture.

Semi-supervised learning uses a small amount of labeled data to predict labels of unlabeled data as well as to improve clustering performance, whereas unsupervised learning analyzes only unlabeled data for clustering purpose. We propose a new clustering-based semi-supervised learning method by reflecting the initial predicted labels of unlabeled data on the objective function. The initial prediction should be done in terms of a discrete probability distribution through a classification method using labeled data. As a result. clusters are formed and labels of unlabeled data are predicted according to the information of labeled data in the same cluster. We evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed method in terms of classification errors through numerical experiments with blinded labeled data.
