        The Role Adaption Process of Head Nurses in the General Hospitals

        Purpose. The purpose of this study is to identify the role adaptation process experienced by head nurses. Methods. Data were collected from 10 head nurses with in-depth interviews about their actual experiences. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed. The collected data were analyzed by the grounded theory methodology of Strauss and Corbin. Results. The core category was identified as “weighing and balancing,” and the role adaptation process was divided into six stages by time sequence: inquiring, approaching to others, bringing people into their fold, working with conviction, avoiding conflicts, and settling. Conclusion. The results of this study yield useful information for top mangers of nursing to identify, by stages, the demands of the head nurses in their role adaptation process. The findings of this study contributes to developing programs that facilitates the head nurses’ role adaptation.

        근위축성 측삭경화증 환자의 투병경험

        The purpose of this study was to identify and describe phenomenological structures of the lived experience of struggling against an illness for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Methods: The participants were 7 patients with ALS recruited by snowball sampling who agreed to participate in this research and could verbally communicated with the researcher. Data were collected by long term-repeated interviews with participants in their own homes. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method of phenomenology. Results: Four categories were extracted as follows: ‘Being seized with fear of death’, ‘Living a marginal life’, ‘Accepting hard fate’, and ‘Clinging to faint life’. Seven theme clusters were identified as: ‘Wandering to find a healing method with ominous signs in the body’, ‘Having a diagnosis of ALS is like a bolt from the blue and struggling against illness with faint hope’, ‘Being forced out to the edge of life with anguish’, ‘Filling one’s heart with hatred and longing toward becoming estranged from the world’, ‘Living with stigma as a stumbling block with bitter grief in one’s heart’, ‘Accepting every things as one’s fate with self controlled fear of death’, and ‘Attaching to desire to live’. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used to develop the programs to support patients with ALS and their family.

        임상간호사의 직무소진 극복과정

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the process of overcoming professional burnout among clinical nurses. Methods: Data were collected from 12 clinical nurses through in-depth interviews about their actual experiences. The main question was “How do you describe your experience of the process of overcoming professional burnout?" Qualitative data from the field notes and transcribed notes were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology developed by Strauss & Corbin. Results: The core category of experience of the process of professional burnout among clinical nurses was identified as “Keeping a balance by awakening-relaxing-coexisting". The participants used six interactional strategies such as ‘Confronting problems', ‘Exposing problems', ‘Laying the mind's burdens down', ‘Taking a breather', ‘Seeing from a different perspective', ‘Accepting realities'. The results of overcoming process of professional burnout were ‘Coexisting' and ‘Revitalizing'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for designing supportive programs and policies to solve professional burnout in clinical nurses.

        30대 기혼여성간호사의 노동과 소진경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

        본 연구는 30대 기혼여성간호사의 소진경험의 의미와 본질을 이해하기 위해 콜레이지(Colaizzi)의 현상학적 연구방법을 이용한 질적 연구이다. 본 연구의 참여자는 연구목적을 잘 이해하여 적극적으로 자신의 경험을 들려줄 수 있다고 판단되는 9명의 30대 기혼여성간호사로 구성되었다. 자료수집에 소요된 기간은 2010년 3월부터 2010년 9월까지 약 7개월이었으며, 자료는 참여자와의 반복적인 개인심층면담을 통해 수집되었다. 수집된 자료는 콜레이지(Colaizzi)가 제시한 7단계의 분석방법을 따라 분석되었다. 자료분석 결과를 살펴보면 첫째, 기혼여성간호사들은 남성배우자 중심으로 주도권이 형성되어 있는 가정과 남성의사 중심의 업무관행이 이루어지는 병원에서 과중한 업무와 양육・가사의 이중부담을 안고 소진되어 가는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 기혼여성간호사들은 기혼여성간호사에게 비친화적인 업무환경 속에서 고군분투하며, 심각한 소진을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 기혼여성간호사들은 과중한 업무부담, 육아 및 가사부담, 불투명한 미래, 간호업무의 전문성결여에 대한 회의감으로 인해 이직을 심각하게 고려하며, 선택의 딜레마를 안고 힘겨운 싸움을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 기혼여성간호사들의 소진을 해결하고 이직의도를 완화하여 가정과 직장에 안정되게 정착할 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. The purpose of this study was to describe the professional burnout experienced by married female nurses who work full-time in the hospital setting. There were nine participants who have agreed to participate in this study. Data were collected by in-depth interviews of the participants in one-on-one setting. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method of phenomenology. As results, married female nurses were getting tired of living seems like tightrope walking between a family and a career in the male centered house and work environment. And also married female nurses were getting burn out to struggle unfriended job environment such as irritable three shift work pattern, one-sided burden of household chores and child-care, patriarchal authoritarian of hospital, uncertain future of nursing profession. Thus married female nurses were faced dilemma between keeping or leaving job. The results represent the significant barriers in nursing practice for the married female nurses. To improve quality of their work performance this barriers must be modified by all aspects such as individual attempts, family supports, hospital policies, and social-cultural supports.

        최고 간호관리자의 역할적응과정

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the role adaptation process experienced by executive directors of nursing department of general hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 9 executive nursing directors though in-depth interviews about their experiences. The main question was “How do you describe your experience of the process of role adaptation as an executive nursing director?” Qualitative data from field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss & Corbin’s grounded theory methodology. Results: The core category of experience of the process of role adaptation as an executive nursing director was identified as “entering the center with pushing and pulling”. The participants used five interactional strategies; ‘maintaining modest attitudes’, ‘inquiring about trends of popular feeling’, ‘making each person a faithful follower’, ‘collecting & displaying power’, ‘leading with initiative’. The consequences of role adaptation in executive nursing directors were ‘coexisting with others’, ‘immersing in one’s new role with dedication’, and ‘having capacity for high tolerance’. The types of role adaptations of executive directors in nursing department were friendly type, propulsive type, accommodating type. Conclusion: The results of this study produced useful information for executive nursing directors on designing a self-managerial program to enhance role adaptation based on interactional strategies.

      • 간호대학생의 임상실습 적응과정

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find and describe the social adjustment process of nursing students in the clinical practice. Methods: The participants were 19 nursing students who hadmore than 24 weeks clinical practice and agreed with the participation in this research. Data were collected from focused group interviews. The participants were divided into three groups. Data and transcribed notes were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology and it was developed by Strauss & Corbin (1998). Results: Core concept was extracted as “Adapting to the strange environment". And 6 interaction strategies of the social adjustment process of nursing students in the clinical practice were derived. 6 interaction strategies were as follows: 'Inquiring', 'Changing', 'Enduring', 'Accepting', 'Acquiring', and 'Attracting'. Conclusion: The results of this study will be used to develop the programs to support the adjustment of nursing students to the clinical practice. Especially this support program must embody the core concept that is "Adapting to the strange environment". That has been developed by nursing students who adjusted themselves to the strange environment by their own methods.

        질적연구에서의 윤리성에 관한 고찰

        Purpose: This study was aimed to examine the background of the emergence of qualitative research and the purpose pursued by qualitative research. Based on this, it was to derive ethical principles and considerations that the researcher should reflect and practice in the process of conducting qualitative research. Methods: A review article was constructed by collecting and analyzing extensive literature related to the research ethics topics. Results: In a human subject research, both positivistic and qualitative researchers should most sensitively consider the protection of the research subjects, especially those in vulnerable situations. Ethical principles for human subject research can be suggested as follows. The first is to respect and protect the subject's autonomy, which is linked to the principle of informed consent and subject protection. Second, the researcher should conduct research according to the best interests of the study participants. This is linked to the selection of research topics and the reciprocity of the research results. Third, it is necessary to maintain an open attitude to the study participants. To this end, it is also linked to the researcher's open and sympathetic attitude to respect the emotions and experiences of the study participants, and to treat them truthfully without hiding or deceived during the data collection process. Conclusion: The core purpose of qualitative research is to restore humanity. Qualitative research needs to go deeper into the lives of others. Researchers who are conducting qualitative research must reflect on ethics and consider ethical guidelines.

        기혼여성의 불임경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

        본 연구는 기혼여성의 불임경험에 담겨있는 상황적 맥락과, 신체ㆍ심리ㆍ사회적 문제를 포괄적이고도 심층적으로 탐색하여 관련된 현상의 구조와 의미를 밝혀내기 위해 수행된 현상학적 연구이다. 본 연구의 참여자들은 결혼한 가임기의 여성으로서 임신을 원하여 피임을 하지 않은 상태에서도 3년 이상 임신을 하지 못해서 신체적, 심리적 어려움을 경험하고 있는 6명의 여성으로 구성되었다. 자료는 참여자와의 개별적인 심층면담을 통해 수집되었고, 자료 분석은 Colaizzi가 제시한 7단계의 분석방법에 따라 이루어졌다. 본 연구를 통해 도출된 결과는 4가지 주제모음에 함축적으로 담겨있는데, 각각의 주제모음은 ‘불임으로 삶이 무너짐’, ‘불임치료로 피폐되어 감’, ‘불임으로 인해 단절된 삶’, ‘탈출구를 찾기 위해 애를 씀’으로 나타났다. ‘불임으로 삶이 무너짐’은 불임진단이전의 삶이 무너지고 삶의 국면이 부정적으로 전환되는 현상을 나타내며, ‘불임치료로 피폐되어 감’은 불임치료에 집착하는 과정에서 경험하는 신체적, 정신적, 경제적 소진상태를 나타내고 있다. ‘불임으로 인해 단절된 삶’은 불임으로 인해 가족 및 사회적 교류에서 정서적 상처를 받고 이를 기피하는 참여자들의 고립상태를 나타내고 있다. 마지막으로 ‘탈출구를 찾기 위해 애를 씀’은 불임으로 해체되고, 피폐되었으며, 단절된 삶을 경험한 참여자들이 불임이라는 피할 수 없는 삶의 조건을 받아들이고자 필사적으로 노력하는 상황을 담고 있다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 불임여성을 위한 지지체계가 마련되어야 필요가 있다. 뿐만 아니라 불임여성의 갈등과 스트레스를 감소시키기 위한 중재프로그램에는 사회적 지지요소와 내재적 지지요소가 균형을 이루며 반영되어야 할 필요가 있으며, 무엇보다 불임여성 스스로가 찾고 수행하는 자생적 노력이 지지되고 존중되어야 할 것으로 보인다. The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of infertility among married women in Korea. There were six participants who have agreed to participate in this study. Data were collected by in-depth interviews of the participants in one-on-one setting. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method of phenomenology. As a result, 4 main themes were extracted from the raw data which were ‘broken life by infertility’, ‘exhausted life by infertility’, ‘disconnected life by infertility’, and ‘Struggling to find the way out’. ‘Broken life by infertility’ was a very early experience of women who are diagnosed with infertility. And also ‘exhausted life by infertility’ showed that infertile women have been exhausted physically, psychologically, and economically during artificial insemination. ‘Disconnected life by infertility’ meant that infertile women were self-blaming as lacking person and they isolated themselves from others. ‘Struggling to find the way out’ meant that infertile women were struggling to overcome this difficult situations with the help of social support system and internal mechanisms. The results of this study can be used to develop the programs to support with married women infertility within their living experiences of suffering.
