Brucella species are facultative intracellular pathogenic α-Proteobacteria that can cause brucellosis in humans and domestic animals. The clinical and veterinary importance of the bacteria has led to well established studies on the molecular mechanisms of Brucella infection of host organisms. However, to date, no genome-wide study has scanned for genes related to the host specificity of Brucella spp. The majority of bacterial genes related to specific environmental adaptations such as host specificity are well-known to have evolved under positive selection pressure. We thus detected signals of positive selection for individual orthologous genes among Brucella genomes and identified genes related to host specificity. We first determined orthologous sets from seven completely sequenced Brucella genomes using the Reciprocal Best Hits (RBH). A maximum likelihood analysis based on the branch-site test was accomplished to examine the presence of positive selection signals, which was subsequently confirmed by phylogenetic analysis. Consequently, 12 out of 2,033 orthologous genes were positively selected by specific Brucella lineages, each of which belongs to a particular animal host. Extensive literature reviews revealed that half of these computationally identified genes are indeed involved in Brucella host specificity. We expect that this genome-wide approach based on positive selection may be reliably used to screen for genes related to environmental adaptation of a particular species and that it will provide a set of appropriate candidate genes.

This paper presents a heuristic process-optimization procedure for minimizing warpage in injection-molded parts based on the dynamic robust design methodology. The injection molding process is known to have intrinsic variations of its process conditions due to various factors, including incomplete process control facilities. The aim of the robust design methodology advocated by Taguchi is to determine the optimum design variables in a system which is robust to variations in uncontrollable factors. The proposed procedure can determine the optimal robust conditions of injection molding processes at a minimum cost through a trade-off strategy between the degree of warpage and the packing time.

The most time consuming job in the sheet metal forming process is compensating for springback. Factors such as uneven material properties and process conditions generate noise, which in turn create springback. The springback is very sensitive to the process and noise conditions, and the main effects of the design variables cannot be obtained from mean analysis. Therefore, to achieve minimal springback, an effective design countermeasure must be put in place to reduce noise effects. In this study, two robust design methods toachieve minimal springback in U-channel forming, including compensation process, are proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is shown with an example of the sidewall curl springback. The proposed methods consistently outperform our previous work, indicating that the complex method is more preferable to the mean analysis, if there is no evidence of additivity of effects.

With the increasingly rapid diffusion of mass communication technology, media audience is able to take on a participatory role in their news consumption. To meet the audience's demand for interactivity, news organizations are discovering new modes of online services and investing more economic and editorial capital towards their online comment sections. As a result, these interactive features are changing the way audience consumes and shares information and the way that news are reported. In short, the online news experience transforms to a social experience with other news readers. This study shows that the commentary section of online news media affects readers’ formation of opinions as well as their willingness to comment. In addition, the degree of persuasion effect is differentiated by topics, but not by the presentation of other readers’ profiles.
