Background: Caveolin, a family of integral membrane proteins are a principal component of caveolae membranes. In this study, we investigated the effect of p38 kinase on differentiation and on inflammatory responses in sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-treated chondrocytes. Methods: Rabbit articular chondrocytes were prepared from cartilage slices of 2-week-old New Zealand white rabbits by enzymatic digestion. SNP was used as a nitric oxide (NO) donor. In this experiments measuring SNP dose response, primary chondrocytes were treated with various concentrations of SNP for 24h. The time course of the SNP response was determined by incubating cells with 1mM SNP for the indicated time period $(0{\sim}24h)$. The cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and type II collagen expression levels were determined by immunoblot analysis, and prostaglandin $E_2\;(PGE_2)$ assay was used to measure the COX-2 activity. The tyrosine phosphorylation of caveolin-1 was determined by immunoblot analysis and immunostaining. Results: SNP treatment stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation of caveolin-1 and activation of p38 kinase. SNP additionally caused dedifferentiation and inflammatory response. We showed previously that SNP treatment stimulated activation of p38 kinase and ERK-1/-2. Inhibition of p38 kinase with SB203580 reduced caveolin-1 tyrosine phosphorylation and COX-2 expression but enhanced dedifferentiation, whereas inhibition of ERK with PD98059 did not affect caveolin-1 tyrosine phosphorylation levels, suggesting that ERK at least is not related to dedifferentiation and COX-2 expression through caveolin-1 tyrosine phosphorylation. Conclusion: Our results indicate that SNP in articular chondrocytes stimulates dedifferentiation and inflammatory response via p38 kinase signaling in association with caveolin-1 phosphorylation.
Use of Entomophthorales to Control Arthropods

Entomopathogenic fungi infect some arthropod pest and have been used for biological control. Some entomopathogenic fungi have high potential in insect pest management worldwide, and most of researches were given to Hypocreales order of Ascomycota, but little in Zygomycota, such as Entomophthorales in our country. We have identified some species belonging to Entomophthorales and investigated cultural features and ecology of Entomophaga aulicae. E. aulicae in sweet potato fields, where Aedia leucomelas was a dominant pest, had caused epizootics from 2002–2005. E. aulicae-infected A. leucomelas larva were mostly found from August to October and its occurrence was significantly related to the precipitation. E. aulicae were mainly observed in dead A. leucomelas larval populations (infection rate = 41.3% in 2002), rather than other lepidopteran pests. E. aulicae was morphologically and genetically identified and its virulence was characterized in laboratory conditions. Additionally, pest infection by Zoophthora radicans, Neozygites floridana and some Entomophthorales have been identified. On the basis with this information, we need research to predict the prevalence and to develop biological control agent using Entomophthorales including E. aulicae that contribute to regulation of host populations.

대만에 위치한 세계채소센터는 채소 생산의 증가와 소비를 통하여 개발도상국의 가난과 영양실조를 감소시키는 것을 주요 임무로 1971년 문을 열었으며, 세계채소센터내 종자은행(GRSU)은 1985년 건물을 설립하면서 본격적으로 유전자원을 수집하고 도입하기 시작하였다. 세계 최고의 채소은행으로 전세계 150개국으로부터 지역고유 자원 12,000여점을 포함하여 57,000점 이상의 자원을 보유하고 있다. 유전자원의 도입은 주로 국제적인 협력을 통하여 이루어지며 주요 기초정보로는 임시번호, 학명, 작물명, 중복여부, 수집지, 증식세대, 제공자번호, 핵심집단여부 등이 있다. 자원의 증식은 일 년에 한 번 건기에 이루어지며 혼종, 교잡된 자원에 대한 관리지침을 마련하여 이용자들이 양질의 유전자원을 이용하도록 돕고 있다. 중기보존자원은 5~10년 주기로, 장기보존자원은 10년에 한 번 발아조사 하는 것을 원칙으로 하고 있다. 증식이 완료된 자원은 종자량, 분리여부, 보존가치를 판단하여 정식 보존 번호를 부여한다. 유전자원의 분양은 유상으로 실시하나 공동연구자에게 분양하는 유전자원은 무상이며, 유전자원의 분양과 세계채소센터에서 육종한 계통 분양시 서로 다른 MTA가 적용된다. Vegetable is a very important crop to alleviate the malnutrition, improve livelihoods andenhance maternal health in developing country. Established in 1985, the AVRDC genebank has conserved more than 57,000 accessions including 12,000 accessions of indigenous from 150 countries around the world. The germplsam introduction is accompanied by international cooperation. The passport data consists of accession number, scientific name, core collection, collection area, generation of the regenerated, duplication site, donation number, etc. All introduced germplasms are multiplied or regenerated, which is carried out only during the dry season between the end of October and March with the consideration to produce seeds with the highest quality. A sufficient quantity of high qualified seeds are registered, given five digits numbers with initial of the genus, and stored in base and active collections for long-term and medium-term conservation, respectively. In principle, germplasms are distributed at a cost, but freely to cooperator. Also, the MTA is applied differently for plant genetic resources from breeding lines made by AVRDC.

Background : Since the first successful kidney transplantation from a brain death donor(BDD) was done in 1979, organ transplantations from BDD have steadily increased. The number of BDDs have been increasing year by year. The purpose of this study is to analyze clinical status of organ donor from BDDs. Methods : We analyzed retrospectively the status of BDDs registerd for organ transplant program in Asan Medical Center from January, 1992 to March, 1997. Results: The male to female ratio was 3 : 1, and the age distribution was the highest in twenties. The distribution of cause of brain death was the highest in motor vehicle accidents. The distribution of acquired organ was the highest in kidney, heart, liver in order. The distribution of days stayed in ICU before organ donation was the highest in 2 days. The choice of agent for inotropic support of the myocardium is dobutamine. The donors have been transfused with packed red blood cell(PRBC) to maintain the hematocrit between 25∼35%. Two units of PRBC should be readily available at all times for transfusion. The failure of organ donation was mainly very poor organ condition. Conclusions : We wish that these results were made use of bases of status of organ donation from BDDs. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1998; 34: 160∼166)
