        Electronic structure of the Au-intercalated graphene/Ni(111) surface

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report the electronic structure of the Au-intercalated graphene/Ni(111) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction. The graphene/Ni(111) shows no Dirac cone near the Fermi level and a relatively broad C 1s core level spectrum probably due to the broken sublattice symmetry in the graphene on the Ni(111) substrate. When Au atoms are intercalated between them, the characteristic Dirac cone is completely recovered near the Fermi level and the C 1s spectrum becomes sharper with the appearance of a 10 × 10 superstructure. The fully Au-intercalated graphene/Ni(111) surface shows a p-type character with a hole pocket of ∼0.034 Å<SUP>−1</SUP> diameter at the Fermi level. When the surface is doped with Na and K, a clear energy gap of ∼0.4 eV is visible irrespective of alkali metal.</P>

      • Development of therapeutic technology through analysis of growth factor of myoma

        Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the level of expression of various growth factors in myoma and to investigate the effect of growth factor inhibitor and to compare the effect of conventional regimens. Methods: The expression levels of growth factors in normal myometrium and myoma were compared by immunohistochemical staining. After primary culture of normal myometrial cells and myoma cells, cell viability was confirmed by treatment with 100 nM Ulipristal acetate (UPA) and Mifepristone (RU486) for 48 hours. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expression of each of these growth factors. Cell viability was determined by treatment with 10uM TGF inhibitor(LY364947) and 5uM VEGF inhibitor(Axitinib) for 24 hours in cultured normal myometrial cells and myoma cells. Results: Immunohistochemical staining revealed that TGF expression was 20% in normal myometrium and 60% in myoma. VEGF expression was 1% in normal myometrium and 16% in myoma respectively. Cell viability was the most significant decrease with 58.59% mifepristone treatment in myoma tissue, and 57.20% in normal myometrium with UPA treatment. In the protein expression, EGF was significantly increased by 80% and IGF was significantly increased by 250% when UPA treated to normal myometrial cells. The expression of VEGF was decreased by 70% when Mifepristone treated to myoma cells. In normal myometrial cell, cell viability was significantly decreased by 60% of the TGF inhibitor treated cells and by 70% of the VEGF inhibitor treated cells. Cell viability of myoma cells was significantly decreased by 27.69% treated with TGF inhibitor and 27.34% treated with VEGF inhibitor. Conclusion: In myoma, TGF was the most expressed among the various growth factors, and VEGF was next increased to be expressed. The administration of inhibitor significantly inhibited the growth of myoma cells, and the suppressive effect was significantly greater than that of conventional drug therapy.

        Sleep Disorders and Menopause

        Sleep disorders are one of the main symptoms of menopause. Symptoms of sleep disorders that menopausal women complain about include falling asleep, frequent awakening and/or early morning awakening. There are many possible causes of sleep disorders in postmenopausal women, including vasomotor symptoms, ovarian hormone changes, restless legs syndrome, periodic leg movement syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea. In this review, we discuss the relationship between menopause and sleep disorders.

        Smart farm (plant factory) technology is evolving into various farms of convergence technology through linkage with bio & IT industry, and urban agriculture. Particularly, it can serve as a key solution to societal issues, such as rural aging, rural migration settlement and rural job creation for young people. However, the level of technology and industrialization of the plant factories in domestic smart farms is still growing. For example, plant factories are centered on production of leaf vegetables due to limited technology to maintain light quality and intensity of artificial light sources. Therefore, it is important to acquire core technology necessary to design an automated system that enhances modeling and industrializing Korean smart farms. In this study, a natural light condensing and transmission device was designed to develop a next-generation light supply system that uses both natural and artificial light. The prototype of the natural light condensing and transmission device consisted of a condenser lens, an optical sensor, a light source tracking device, and an optical fiber. The condenser lens has increased the efficiency of the optical fiber by focusing more natural light on the optical fiber in the form of an aspherical convex lens. The optical sensor maximizes the efficiency of light collection by sensing from the sunrise. The light source tracking device enables more precise tracking of light sources as it uses an optical sensor system. The optical fiber has the highest degree of freedom among optical transmission technologies and it can transmit more than 200 m light sources with a low attenuation rate (0.06%/m). In the future, The spectroscopic measurement of light source and light efficiency (loss rate) will test using a spectrophotometer (FieldSpec 4, ASD Inc., USA) having a measurement range of 350 ~ 2,500 nm.

      • Prevalence, incidence and birth rate of endometriosis in Korea using big data

        Objective: The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence, incidence and birth rate of endometriosis in Korea using big data. Methods: This study is using administrative data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). These data from overall Korean population, totaling 45 million people, with national claims data for the period from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2016. We selected patients with endometriosis as primary or secondary diagnosis code from the NHIS database and estimated prevalence and incidence rate and birth rate of endometriosis according to time and age group. Results: 433,422 women were diagnosed as endometriosis from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2016. The overall prevalence of endometriosis is 2.7 per 1000 women. The prevalence increased gradually except a few periods, especially from 2007 to 2008. The estimated incidence is 1.4 per 1000 women. It also increase gradually, especially in the last five years. 39658 patients out of 211884 gave birth after diagnosis. The peak age was 29 in this group. A one year difference between the time of diagnosis and the time of birth was most common. On the other hand, for those who were treated before giving a birth, 2 years of time difference was most common. Among patients who gave birth, 56% of them gave birth without treatment. Conclusion: The prevalence and incidence of endometriosis in Korean women were lower than previous reports in high-risk populations studies. We found a significant trend of increase in diagnosing endometriosis in Korean women with time, especially in young age group.

      • Epidemiology and recent treatment of Leiomyoma, Adenomyosis and Endometriosis with administrative data in Korean women : A National Population-based Study

        Objective: The purpose of this study examines myoma, adenomyosis and endometriosis epidemiology and treatment trend of the general population in Korea. Methods: This study is using the entire administrative data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) from 2002 to 2016. More than 50 million people signed up the KNHIS, so this data may represent most health care status of Korea. Diagnosis of myoma and adenomyosis is determined by ICD-10 code; D25 (D250~259) and N80.0. The ICD-10 defined the diagnosis code from N80.1 to N80.9 as endometriosis. The diagnosis code N80.0 (adenomyosis) is excluded, whereas N80 is included in the diagnosis. Results: Patients with diseases are increased throughout 15 years. The number of patients diagnosed with myoma and adenomyosis increased from 154,080 and 24,367 in 2002 to 557,547 and 128,794 in 2016, respectively. Also, 33,453 patients were diagnosed as endometriosis in 2002, 68,036 women have endometriosis in 2016. The prevalence of myoma, adenomyosis and endometriosis, between 11 to 52 year old ages, is increasing from 8.8, 1.4 and 1.9 per 1000 in 2002 to 28.8, 7.5 and 4.0 per 1000 in 2016, respectively. Treatment of these diseases was a mostly surgical approach, particularly hysterectomy is preferential treatment, but the ratio is decreasing. On the other hand, preserving the uterus and ovary method has increased recently. Conclusion: Epidemiology study of myoma, adenomyosis and endometriosis has done in various participants, so the prevalence and incidence have been suggested in wide range. This study is the first general population based epidemiologic study in Asia. Our study suggests prevalence and incidence of diseases has increased steadily. These diseases can influence fertility and quality of life of women, so screening and early detection of diseases is needed in reproductive aged women.

        Objective: The prevalence and incidence of endometriosis are estimated highly varied according to several study. Until now, the overall prevalence is known about 10% in reproductive-age women and up to 50% of symptomatic women with infertility or pain in high-risk population. in addition, there are few studies about nationwide epidemiological data in korea. Therefore reliable estimation of prevalence and incidence of endometriosis in korea remain unclear. Methods: This study is using administrative data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). These data from overall Korean population, totaling 45 million people, with national claims data for the period from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2016. We selected patients with endometriosis as primary or secondary diagnosis code from the NHIS database and estimated prevalence and incidence rate of endometriosis according to time and age group. The diagnoses of endometriosis were identified by ICD-10 codes N80, except adenomyosis (N80.0). Results: Among women aged 11- 55 selected from the NHIS database from 2002 to 2016, 212,509 women were diagnosed as endometriosis. The incidence of endometriosis was increased 1.94 per 1000 person in 2002 to 1.82 per 1000 person in 2016. The overall prevalence of endometriosis was increased from 1.9 per 1000 person in 2002 to 4.0 per 1000 women in 2016. The prevalence increased gradually except 2007 to 2008. Conclusion: We found a significant trend of increase in diagnosing endometriosis in Korean women with time, although prevalence was decline in 2007 to 2008. We presume that this declination was a result of restructuring the diagnostic code at that time. Considering that endometriosis is associated with subfertility and has high incidence rate in young age in Korean women, it is very important to detect and treat endometriosis earlier.

        A Single-Chip CMOS Smoke and Temperature Sensor for an Intelligent Fire Detector

        <P>A single-chip CMOS smoke and temperature sensor for use as an intelligent fire detector is proposed. The proposed smoke sensor measures smoke density based on the light-scattering method. The temperature sensor is integrated with the smoke sensor not only to sense heat from a fire but also to compensate for the temperature dependency of the smoke sensor. The prototype chip includes an on-chip photodiode (PD), pixel circuit, correlated double sampling (CDS) circuit, and analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The prototype chip was fabricated using a 0.35-mu m CMOS process and was placed inside the smoke detection chamber, while the thermistor for the temperature sensor is placed outside the chamber. The measurement results show plusmn 1% smoke detection accuracy over the range 4% ~ 25% and plusmn1degC temperature-sensing accuracy over the range 25degC ~ 95degC. The power consumption of the prototype chip is 220 nW, excluding the infrared light-emitting diode (IR LED).</P>
