<P>The research work examines effects of organic-inorganic hybrid membrane made of low-cost sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) and graphene oxide (GO) to improve the membrane properties for application in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). SPPO membrane alone is economical but undesirable for VRFB operation because it is significantly vulnerable to degradation in vanadium electrolyte. For this reason, the inorganic GO is introduced into the SPPO polymer matrix, thus beneficial effects are acquired specifically that the hybrid SPPO-GO membrane shows enhanced chemical-physical properties, especially higher ion selectivity is obtained for 2 wt% GO incorporated into SPPO, the greater than pure SPPO and Nafion 212 membrane. Furthermore, vanadium permeability is lowered for composite membrane incorporated with GO. Importantly, the hybrid membrane shows increased oxidizing stability in comparison to the SPPO membrane alone. Accordingly, the hybrid SPPO-GO membrane obtains higher efficiencies than pure SPPO membrane in VRFB cell test. Therefore, the results of this work can reveal promising consideration on the use of economical polymer membrane for further development in VRFB application. (C) 2018 The Electrochemical Society.</P>
Physical properties improvement of polymer membrane material by incorporation with inorganic dopant

The polymer membrane in the study is reinforced by raising hydrophilicity on structure due to incorporation with hydrophilic inorganic material. Due to the addition of hydrophilic functional groups, protons are easily appealed and transported through membrane. Therefore, electrochemical reaction in battery/fuel cell can take place at faster kinetic and thus be expected to perform with high cell efficiency. As a result, the inorganic-doped polymer membrane shows enhancement in physical properies such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity. To confirm improved properties and contribution of inorganic dopant, structural analyses are carried out using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermo gravimetric analysis. The accomplishment of this work confirms the method for improving hydrocarbon membrane by inorganic/ organic hybridizing preparation to make the electrolyte material more promising for battery/fuel cell application.

Imidazolium-brominated polyphenylene oxide (Im-bPPO) is fabricated on the functionalization of bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) using 1-Methylimdazole. For the purpose of long cycle life of vanadium redox battery (VRB), the chemical stability of Im-bPPO, sPPO, Nafion and Fumatech membranes were evaluated firstly in the 0.1 M vanadium (V) solution dissolved in 3 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 72 h and UV analyses of the degradation products proved that ether bond in PPO backbone was vulnerable to be attacked by vanadium (V) ion. It was found that the membranes had slightly weight loss after soaking in STS pressure vessel with 2 ml distilled water at 200 °C for 24 h. Further evaluation on the degradation mechanism of the membranes was carried out in fenton`s reagent solution at 50 °C for 72 h. The Fumatech membranes exhibit better performance than AEM and CEM, but Nafion 212 still suffers the chemical degradation.

A polyphenylene oxide (PPO)-based anion exchange membrane based on the functionalization of bromomethylated PPO using 1-methylimdazole was fabricated for vanadium redox flow application. The imidazolium- bromomethylated PPO (Im-bPPO) showed lower permeability of VO2+ ions (2.9×10-14 ㎡/sec), compared to Nafion 212 (2.3×10-12 ㎡/sec) and FAP-450 (7.9×10-14 ㎡/sec). Even though the Im-bPPO membrane has higher permeability, the energy efficiency of the VRFB with the Im-bPPO membrane was slightly lower than that of Nafion and FAP-450. The Im-bPPO membrane exhibits good voltage efficiency compared to FAP-450 and Nafion 212 because of its better ion conductivity. The Im-bPPO membrane showed up good performance, but a decline in performance at later cycles was observed.

To verify the stability and cell performance as a negative electrode of a lead acid battery was evaluated by laminating a graphite sheet. After the capacity test to evaluate the stability was analyzed SEM and XRD. The carbon-coated graphite sheet was chemically stable in the capacity of the lead acid battery test voltage range, while the pressure in the graphite sheet was able to minimize the distance to the flaring gas generated in the graphite sheet interval. The amount of the carbon coating on the graphite sheet was the same amount of carbon that is used in the conventional Pb / C cell, a cell performance evaluation was carried out. Lead-acid batteries applying carbon-coated graphite sheet showed that the cell capacitor characteristics than the introduction of the original carbon, low-current charge shows better discharge performance than high-current charge.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile duct tumor. Esophageogastroduodenoscopy showed a friable duodenal cap mucosa with multiple ulcers and edematous mucosa of the second part of the duodenum that caused a partial lumen obstruction. The final histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic duodenitis with larvae consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient was treated with Ivermectin for two weeks and anticoagulation therapy for three months. After treatment and a six-month follow-up, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms and leg swelling resolved completely. This is the first documented case of a patient in Vietnam with strongyloidiasis who presented with venous thromboembolism and duodenal obstruction.
Home ranges and activity patterns of Sunda pangolins Manis javanica (Pholidota: Manidae) in Vietnam

This study provides an update on the movement ecology of the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) in threedistinct ecoregions of Vietnam. Using radio telemetry, we tracked 12 pangolins rescued from the illegalwildlife trade and translocated to protected areas. We found that the average home range of translocatedSunda pangolins was 1.58 km2 and did not vary significantly between sexes, mass, or habitat. However,there was a marked decrease in range size with decreasing sizes of suitable forest space and terrain, or alocalized abundance of resources in some locations. Pangolins were most active from 03:00 to 04:00. Thestudy highlights the need for further research to fully understand the ecology of this unique and enig matic species.
