Screening insecticidal efficacies of various plant extracts to develop biochemical insecticide

This study was conducted to improve the effect of environment-friendly Tetranychus urticae pesticide through the development of Tetranychus urticae biopesticide using the plant extract. Tested extracts were fig leaf extract, viburnum erosum extract; besides Sophora flavescens Ait extract, Derris root extract, Tobacco leaf extract, and they were proved to be the caricidal effect of two spotted spider mite adults by spraying on the French bean leaf inoculated for Tetranychus urticae with each concentration; 500ppm, 200ppm, 100ppm, 50ppm. In the control treatments, caricidal effect was compared with only ‘Eungsami’ (500ppm, 200ppm, 100ppm, 50ppm), of which the main ingredient as environment-friendly organic material is, and distilled water. The caricidal effect of tested extracts to the two spotted spider mite adult was the highest in the Sophora flavescens Ait extract and Tobacco leaf extract over 90%, and comparatively low in the Derris root extract. When the caricidal effect of ‘Eungsami’ was compared with two spotted spider mite adults with each concentration, ‘Eungsami’(500ppm) and Tobacco leaf extract(500ppm) were very excellent as each 95.5%, 98.7% in treated concentration. The effect of Sophora flavescens Ait extract was also high as 96.5%. In the low concentration(50ppm), Sophora flavescens Ait extract was 45.8%, Tobacco leaf extract was the most effective as 53.8%.
Pregnancy Rates and Outcomes of HIV-Infected Women in Korea

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum preventive measures with antiretroviral drugs, appropriate delivery methods, and discouraging breastfeeding significantly decrease the risk of mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Herein, we investigated the pregnancy outcomes in HIV-infected Korean women.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We retrospectively reviewed medical records of childbearing-age HIV-infected women between January 2005 and June 2017 at four tertiary care hospitals in Korea.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Among a total of 95 HIV infected women of child-bearing age with 587.61 years of follow-up duration, 15 HIV-infected women experienced 21 pregnancies and delivered 16 infants. The pregnancy rate was 3.57 per 100 patient-years. Among the 21 pregnancies, five ended with an induced abortion, and 16 with childbirth including two preterm deliveries at 24 and 35 weeks of gestation, respectively. The two preterm infants had low birth weight and one of them died 10 days after delivery due to respiratory failure. Among the 14 full-term infants, one infant was small for gestational age. There were no HIV-infected infants.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The pregnancy rate of HIV-infected women in Korea is lower than that of the general population. Although several adverse pregnancy outcomes were observed, mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection was successfully prevented with effective preventive measures.</P>

Excitatory neurotransmitters, glutamate and aspartate, play an important role in transmission of primary afferents of orofacial pain in trigeminal spinal sensory nucleus. This experiment was performed to study whether capsaicin and its antagonists affect release of amino acids (EAAs) from caudal part of trigeminal spinal sensory nucleus in vitro. Horizontal slices of caudal brain stem of rats were prepared and perfused with modified Krebs-Ringer solution in brain slice chamber. Released amount of EAAs in collected perfusate was measured by HPLC with fluorescence detector. Amount of EAAs released from caudal brainstem slices was increased by capsaicin added to perfusion solution, but not increased by vehicle or ruthenium red or capsazepine. The effect of capsaicin on the release of EAAs was partially blocked by capsaicin antagonists, ruthenium red and capsazepine in vitro.

본 논문에서는 등장 인물 검출 및 인식과 함께 등장 인물의 출연 구간 분석이 가능한 시스템을 제안한다. 드라마, 스포츠와 같은 방송 비디오는 그 특성상 인물이 중심이 되며 각 시점에 등장하는 주요 인물은 방송용 비디오의 중요한 특징이 된다. 따라서 방송용 비디오의 중요한 특징인 등장 인물을 분석하여 효율적인 비디오 관리 시스템을 개발할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 제안된 ACAV(Automatic Characters Analysis in Videos) 시스템은 등장 인물을 검출하여 인물 DB에 등록하는 FAGIS(FAce reGIStration)와 생성된 인물 DB을 이용하여 등장 인물을 분석하는 FACOG(FAce reCOGnition)로 구성된다. 상용화된 등장 인물 분석 시스템인 FaceIt과의 성능 비교를 통해 ACAV의 성능을 검증하였다. 얼굴 검출 실험에서 ACAV의 얼굴 검출률은 84.3%로 FaceIt 보다 약 30% 높았고, 얼굴 인식 실험에서도 ACAV의 얼굴 인식률은 75.7%로 FaceIt 보다 27.5% 높은 성능을 보였다. ACAV 시스템은 방송 멀티미디어 공급자를 위한 대용량 비디오 관리 시스템으로 이용될 수 있으며 일반 사용자를 대상으로 한 PVR(Personal Video Recorder), 모바일 폰 등의 비디오 관리 시스템으로도 이용될 수 있다.
S-488 : Characteristics of Clostridium difficile Ribotype 078

Objectives: The concern for PCR ribotype 078 strain of Clostridium difficile has recently risen worldwide with the epidemics of another hypervirulent PCP ribotype 027 (NAP1/BI/027) strain in North America and Europe, because of 078 strain`s increased prevalence and hypervirulence in humans. We evaluate the clinical overview of C. difficile infection (CDI) caused by 078 strain in comparison with other ribotypes except 027 strain in South Korea. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the Severance Hospital, a tertiary care University-affiliated facility in Seoul, South Korea. We collected total 20 CDI cases by 078 strain (case group) from May 2001 to December 2011. The 38 CDI cases by other non-hypervirulent ribotype including 017, 018 and 014 strains (control group) from December 2011 to May 2012 in same hospital were retrospectively retrieved from the data of clinical microbiology department. The data about clinical symptom and laboratory findings at the time of CDI diagnosis were collected by medical record review. Results: The mean temperature in case group was significantly higher than that in control group (37.3±1.3 vs. 37.0±0.5, p=0.005). The median CDI severity score was significantly higher in case group than that in other control group (2 vs. 1, p=0.019). Invasive procedure during current admission was more common in control group than case group (94.7% vs. 75.0%, p=0.041). The antipseudomonal penicillins during last 3 months from CDI diagnosis were more frequently used in control group than case group (52.6% vs. 20%, p=0.016). In underlying disease analysis, hematologic malignancy were more common in case group than control group (35% vs. 2.6%, p=0.002). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, temperature (OR 7.36, p=0.011) and hematologic malignancy (OR 33.07, p=0.015) were independent clinical factors associated with CDI by ribotype 078 strain. Conclusion: CDI by ribotype 078 has more severe than CDI by other ribotypes except 027 strain and occurs more frequently in patients with hematologic malignancy.

Objectives: The early-goal directed therapy (EGDT) is the current standard approach in severe sepsis patients, which can ameliorate the survival rate up to 10-15 percent. Stress-induced cardiomyopathy (SCMP) is regarded as an acute reversible cardiomyopathy that mimics acute coronary syndrome and increasingly being observed during intensive care with critical ill patients. However, there is no known whether the development of SCMP can affect the clinical outcome in severe sepsis patients received EGDT. Methods: The retrospective cohort study was performed in single center, Severance Hospital. We enrolled total 144 severe sepsis patients with more than 20-years old who received EGDT and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) within 3 days after emergency department arrival during from January 2008 to June 2012. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data including EGDT-associated parameters was retrospectively collected from electric medical record. The primary end-point was the 28-day all-cause mortality. The diagnosis of SCMP was defined through the following modified ‘Proposed Mayo Clinic criteria’: (1) an acute cardiac event typically presenting with chest pain and/or dyspnea; (2) transient systolic dysfunction with marked LV contraction abnormality; (3) new ECG abnormalities or modest elevation in cardiac troponin level. Results: The SCMP was identified in 29 (20.1%) patient. The frequency of male and history of diabetes mellitus in patients with SCMP was higher than those in patients without SCMP (72.4% vs. 50.4%, p=0.038 and 48.3% vs. 25.7%, p=0.024, respectively). The patients with SCMP had the higher levels of delta neutrophil index and APACHE II score (27.8±24.1 vs. 14.7±15.4, p=0.006 and 23.3±6.8 vs. 19.5±7.1, p=0.016, respectively). The 7- and 28-day all-cause mortalities were higher in patients with SCMP compared with patients without SCMP (20.7% vs. 6.2%, p=0.026, 37.9% vs. 18.6%, p=0.044). In the Cox`s regression model, the presence of SCMP was the independent factor associated with 28-day all-cause mortality (OR, 2.7, 95% CI 1.8-8.6, p=0.034). Conclusions: The development of SCMP in spite of successful management by EGDT in severe sepsis patients can increase all-cause mortality.

The changes of the microorganism composition after therapeutic radiation for oral cancer patients are not well known and the longterm follow-up data are not reported. To obtain basic data for understanding of pathogenesis and prevention and treatment of dental caries and mucositis occuring after radiation therapy, 7 of the oral cancer patients presented at the Seoul National University Oral & Maxillofacial Department between 1997 and 1998 whose treatment plan included radiation therapy were recruited to investigate the changes in bacterial composition(total aerobic count, Candida, Staphylococci, Lactobacilli, S.mutans, and S.salivarius(mitis, sanguis)) of the saliva before, during, and after radiation therapy. The basic data obtained from this study on identification and composition change of the bacteria in saliva of patients treated with radiation therapy can be used (1) as a reference for deciding on the ideal anti-microbial spectrum of the oral rinsing agent to be used in patients treated with radiation therapy for malignant tumor of the head and neck region. (2) to enhance the understanding of increase of opportunistic infection after immunochemical changes of the saliva and its relation to specific bacterial infection. (3) as a reference in prescribing prophylactic antibiotics in immunodepressed patients after radiation therapy.
