      • Breakup and Atomization of a Viscous Annular Cylindrical Liquid Jet in Swirling Gases

        A linear stability analysis is presented for a viscous annular cylindrical liquid jet in swirling gases and the mechanisms of the jet breakup and atomization are discussed. The emphasis is put on the effects of the gas swirl intensity both inside and outside the liquid jet on the breakup characteristics of the jet. Three dimensionless parameters Ah, Ea and Eb are introduced to characterize these effects. A characteristic dispersion equation is deduced from a perturbation analysis on the governing equations of the jet flow. The dispersion equation is then used for numerical investigation of the jet breakup and atomization behavior. Computational results show that there exist significant differences in the breakup mechanisms between low speed and high-speed jets. For the low speed jet, the swirl intensity of the outer gas plays a stabilizing role in the breakup process, while the inner swirl intensity has little effect on the jet stability. On the other hand, for the high-speed jet, the inner swirl intensity always exerts destabilizing influences on the jet, while the swirl intensity of the outer gas has no obvious effect on the jet stability under axisymmetrical disturbances, but intensifies the jet instability under non-axisymmetrical disturbances.

      • Large Eddy Simulation of Fuel Sprays in Diesel Engines

        A brief introduction of the recent research at Dalian University of Technology (DUT) on the applications of the large eddy simulation (LES) approach to fuel sprays in a constant volume vessel and in a real engine configuration is presented. Firstly the fundamental of the LES approach and related mathematical models are briefly described. Then, some aspects concerning applications of LES to the fuel spray in the engine environment are discussed, including comparisons between RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations) and LES models; an examination of the influence of different subgrid scale (SGS) models on fuel sprays and their applicability to IC engines; a performance assessment of four breakup models in connection with the LES simulations; as well as an example of the LES application to a Ford 2.0 liter high-speed direct-injection (HSDI) diesel engine. Finally, suggestions to the further LES study in the engine area are proposed.

        AP-SDN: Action Program enabled Software-Defined Networking Architecture

        Software-Defined Networking (SDN) offers several advantages in dynamic routing, flexible programmable control and custom application-driven network management. However, the programmability of the data plane in traditional SDN is limited. A network operator cannot change the ability of the data plane and perform complex packet processing on the data plane, which limits the flexibility and extendibility of SDN. In the paper, AP-SDN (Action Program enabled Software-Defined Networking) architecture is proposed, which extends the action set of SDN data plane. In the proposed architecture, a modified Open vSwitch is utilized in the data plane allowing the execution of action programs at runtime, thus enabling complex packet processing. An example action program is also implemented which transparently encrypts traffic for terminals. At last, a prototype system of AP-SDN is developed and experiments show its effectiveness and performance.

      • Numerical simulation on dynamics of a droplet upon a Liquid film

        The collision dynamics between a droplet and a liquid film of variable thickness has been studied in the numerical simulations. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved in axisymmetric formulation coupled by the volume-of fluid (VOF) method and utilizing an adapting local refinement technique for providing the fine grid to tracking the interface between the gas and the droplet and liquid film. The surface tension force is modeled by a continuum surface force model. To validate our method, results of numerical simulations are compared with experiments available. Results indicate that the motion behavior of droplet impingement upon the liquid film is dominantly influenced by the initial kinetic energy as well as the surface tension and the liquid viscosity.

        Timing and tectonic settings of the Late Paleozoic intrusions in the Zhusileng, northern Alxa: implication for the metallogeny

        The Zhusileng–Hangwula tectonic zone, located in the northern Alxa area, is a key site for understanding the evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO) and related mineral formation. We report the major and trace elements and zircon U-Pb ages of newly discovered mafic and intermediate to felsic intrusive rocks in the Zhusileng area. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analyses of the Echenghei diabase and Haierhan and Heipingshan granites yielded crystallization ages of 305 Ma, 284 Ma, and 271 Ma, respectively. The Late Carboniferous mafic rocks have high MgO and Fe2O3T contents and low K2O and TiO2 contents, and are characterized by depletion of HREEs and notably negative Nb-Ta anomalies, with enrichment of Rb, Ba, and U, which indicate an enriched mantle source. The Early Permian granites of the Zhusileng area are highly differentiated I-type granitoids sourced from mixing of mantle and crust, are high-K calc-alkaline and enriched in LREEs, and exhibit moderately to strongly negative Eu anomalies. All the intrusive rocks formed in a post-collisional extensional environment, which indicates that the branch of the PAO in the northern Alxa area had closed before the Early Permian. The Cu-Mo/Au mineralization in the Zhusileng area formed in the Middle to Late Permian and is genetically linked to the Late Paleozoic post-collisional rifting magmatism from after the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean.

      • Optimization of Injection Parameters for Diesel PCCI Combustion with Genetic Algorithm

        Genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the injection parameters including start of injection (SOI), injection pressure and spray angle for diesel premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA2) was coupled with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code KIVA-3V, as well as with a master-slave parallel algorithm to conduct the multi-objective optimization with goals of low emissions and improved fuel economy. The effect of each parameter on combustion and emissions was investigated based on the temperature and equivalence ratio distributions, as well as spray targeting in the cylinder. The study reveals that premixed combustion dominates PCCI combustion process when SOI advances before 27 °CA BTDC under the conditions of 79 degree spray included angle and 149.7 MPa injection pressure. In the PCCI strategy, injection pressure does not have an obvious effect on combustion and emissions. SOI should be associated with spray targeting to explain the emission trends.
