Hydroa vacciniforme is a rare, light sensitive dermatitis characterized by discrete vesicles followed by varioliform scar formation, which was first described by Bazin on 1862. Our case was a 10-years-old girl who had umblicated vesicles, crusts, varioliform scars on both cheeks, nose, dorsum of hands in symmetrical distribution with itching sensation, which had used to recur in every summer since last five years ago. Histologic examination showed necrosis and multilocular bullae due to reticular degeneration in the epidermis, extravasation of red blood cell and lymphohistiocytic infiltration in the dermis. On urine examination, porphyrin was negative. Diagnosis was established by clinical characteristics and laboratory findins and histologic pictures.

We investigated on how the nature of vehicles influenced on the efficacy of mo isturizer s, cutaneous hydrat, ion, physical property and roughness. Hydration was measured with corneometer, physical property with fermometer, and mughness with image analyser. Used vehicles were as follows : hydrous gel, vater in oil(W/0) emulsion, oil in water(0/W) emulsion. I.Jsed moisturizers were as follows . glycerine, polypeptide and sodium lactat,e, hyaluronic acid-triethanolamine, sodium lactate, pvopylene glycol, The results are summarized as follows : 1. The increment of the hydration effect according to vehicles was in this order. C/ W emulsion, W/0 emulsion, hydrous gel(After 2 hours). 2. The increment of extensibility as physical property was correlated to the in crcment, of hydration effcet(r=0.924). 3. It was shown that, the roughness was decreased after treatment of all mo isturizers except propylene glycol but, there was not significant st.atistically and alsa was no meaningful difference among the vehicles. 4. Among t,he moisturizers, glycerine was superior to other moisturizers on the hydration effect and extensihility. We conclude that 0/W emulsion was suitable vehicle on cutaneous hydration effect and hydration effect is proportion to the increment of flexibility. (Kor J Devmatol 29(1): 8--17, 1991)

The genus Populus (poplar) belonging to the Salicaceae family has been used in traditional medicine, and its several species show various pharmacological properties including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. No study regarding protective effects of Populus species against cerebral ischemia has been reported. Therefore, in the present study, we examined neuroprotective effects of ethanol extract from Populus tomentiglandulosa (Korea poplar) in the hippocampal cornu ammonis (CA1) area of gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient global cerebral ischemia. Pretreatment with 200 mg/kg of P. tomentiglandulosa extract effectively protected CA1 pyramidal neurons from transient global cerebral ischemia. In addition, glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactive astrocytes and ionized calcium binding adapter molecule 1 immunoreactive microglia were significantly diminished in the ischemic CA1 area by pretreatment with 200 mg/kg of P. tomentiglandulosa extract. Briefly, our results indicate that pretreatment with P. tomentiglandulosa extract protects neurons from transient cerebral ischemic injury and diminish cerebral ischemia-induced reactive gliosis in ischemic CA1 area. Based on these results, we suggest that P. tomentiglandulosa can be used as a potential candidate for prevention of ischemic injury.

<P><B>Background:</B></P><P><I>Glehnia littoralis</I> has been used for traditional Asian medicine, which has diverse therapeutic activities. However, studies regarding neurogenic effects of <I>G. littoralis</I> have not yet been considered. Therefore, in this study, we examined effects of <I>G. littoralis</I> extract on cell proliferation, neuroblast differentiation, and the maturation of newborn neurons in the hippocampus of adult mice.</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>A total of 39 male ICR mice (12 weeks old) were randomly assigned to vehicle-treated and 100 and 200 mg/kg <I>G. littoralis</I> extract-treated groups (<I>n</I> = 13 in each group). Vehicle and <I>G. littoralis</I> extract were orally administrated for 28 days. To examine neurogenic effects of <I>G. littoralis</I> extract, we performed immunohistochemistry for 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU, an indicator for cell proliferation) and doublecortin (DCX, an immature neuronal marker) and double immunofluorescence staining for BrdU and neuronal nuclear antigen (NeuN, a mature neuronal marker). This paper presents a novel approach to solve the time constraint issue of DFE with PAM4 signaling. By using track and hold operation to sample signals of the same level at two points, the time constraint of 1 UI in direct DFE can be extended to 1.5UI. The FIR-tap employs LVDS structure to maintain common voltage and SS-LMS algorithm is used to obtain the optimal tap weight. The first post-cursor ISI cancellation is done by the LVDS tap and a sufficient settling time is provided by the proposed DFE. The proposed structure may eliminate the loop unrolling speculative DFE for PAM-4, which leads to less hardware for PAM-4 DFE implementation. A PAM-4 serial link using the proposed DFE was designed in a 65nm CMOS technology and analyzed. Channels with 11.9 dB and 13.8 dB losses were compensated through CTLE and the proposed 1 tap DFE, and simulation results demonstrate the time constraint can be extended without deterioration of the eye opening.

Although current surgical techniques have reduced the incidence of malunion, it is still observed because of the complexity of the fracture or associated injuries. Osteotomy is needed when the amount of malunion is expected to result in an overload of cartilage and instability of the joint. Preoperative planning is essential when performing an osteotomy for malunion. Inadequate planning can result in serious complications, such as iatrogenic malalignment, intraoperative fracture, postoperative recurrence of deformity, or soft tissue injuries. In addition, a poor functional result can occur secondary to poor patient selection. This review article includes the surgical indications and planning to correct malunion. Various methods of corrective osteotomy are described according to the kinds of plane and fixation implants.
