      • Atomistic Assessments of Lithium-Ion Conduction Behavior in Glass-Ceramic Lithium Thiophosphates

        <P>We determined the interatomic potentials of the Li-[PS<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>3-</SUP>] building block in (Li<SUB>2</SUB>S)<SUB>0.75</SUB>(P<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>5</SUB>)<SUB>0.25</SUB> (LPS) and predicted the Li-ion conductivity (σ<SUB>Li</SUB>) of glass-ceramic LPS from molecular dynamics. The Li-ion conduction characteristics in the crystalline/interfacial/glassy structure were decomposed by considering the structural ordering differences. The superior σ<SUB>Li</SUB> of the glassy LPS could be attributed to the fact that ∼40% of its structure consists of the short-ranged cubic S-sublattice instead of the hexagonally close-packed γ-phase. This glassy LPS has a σ<SUB>Li</SUB> of 4.08 × 10<SUP>-1</SUP> mS cm<SUP>-1</SUP>, an improvement of ∼100 times relative to that of the γ-phase, which is in agreement with the experiments.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Anticholinergic drugs block muscarinic receptors at the detrusor muscle of the bladder. It can cause urinary retention by contracting the bladder neck. Cases of hydronephrosis, bladder dilatation as a result of polydipsia while taking anticholinergic drugs have been reported, but very few cases of chronic renal failure can be found. We report a case of a polydipsic schizophrenic patient who, after taking anticholinergic drugs as antipsychotic drugs to treat his schizophrenia for a long time, presented with chronic renal failure due to functional obstructive uropathy in the absence of demonstrable anatomic causes of obstruction.

      • Analysis of Size Distribution for Radioactive Aerosols Generated When Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants

        Metal waste generated during the dismantling of a nuclear power plant can be contaminated with radionuclides. In general, the internal structure is very complex. Thus, metal waste requires various cutting processes. When metal waste is cut, aerosols are generated. Aerosols are generally various particles of very small size suspended in the working area and remain for a considerable period. This may cause internal exposure of workers due to inhalation of radioactive aerosols generated when cutting radioactive metal waste. This study investigated various cutting processes and the size distribution of aerosols generated during the cutting process. The cutting process is normally classified into thermal cutting, mechanical cutting, and laser cutting. Thermal cutting includes plasma, flame, and oxygen cutting. Mechanical cutting includes mechanical saws, cutters, nibblers, and abrasive water jets. Stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and copper are commonly used as cutting materials in nuclear power plants. The size of the aerosol generated from cutting showed a very diverse distribution depending on the cutting methods and cutting materials. In general, aerosol size is distributed within 0.1-1 μm. This size distribution is different from the 5 μm aerosol size suggested by the ICRP Publication 66 Lung model. These results show that it is necessary to conduct further studies on the size of aerosols generated when decommissioning nuclear power plants.

      • Analysis of Imported Cargo Radiation Monitoring System in Korea

        After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan in March 2011, many Koreans were concerned that products exposed to radioactive materials released from the nuclear power plant would be imported into Korea. Systematic radiation monitoring was required for food and daily necessities imported from the nuclear accident area. The need for a legal system to support systematic radiation monitoring was also demanded. The Act on Protective Action Guidelines against Radiation in the Natural Environment was enacted to resolve concerns regarding environmental radiation in Korea in July 2011. According to this law, radiation monitoring equipment has been installed and operated at major airports and ports nationwide. This paper aims to review the radiation monitoring system of the Korean government comprehensively. The legal system and the legal basis for radiation monitoring of imported cargo conducted by each department were investigated by analyzing the laws and regulations of radiation monitoring for the relevant cargo items. In addition, the current status of radiation monitoring by the government departments was examined to determine how radiation monitoring for imported cargo is performed within the legal system. The investigation of the current radiation monitoring system for imported cargo in Korea confirmed that radiation monitoring is conducted by classifying cargo items under the jurisdiction of each government department for all imported cargo. However, the reduction in efficiency of radiation monitoring of imported cargoes, unclear legal grounds for radiation monitoring of imported cargo by some departments, the occurrence of overlapping inspections by departments, and the difficult process of issuing the radiation test certificate required for customs clearance by the Korea Customs Service were also identified. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the current radiation monitoring system for imported cargo in Korea ought to be improved, taking into account efficiency, overlapping inspection, legal background, and the difficult process of issuing the certificates.

        동종 조혈 모세포 이식 환자에서 감염증의 양상에 대한 고찰

        목적: 조혈 모세포 이식을 받은 환자의 감염증의 양상을 분석하고, 감염증이 사망률에 미치는 영향과 사망률에 대한 위험인자의 예측 근거를 제시 하고자 한다. 방법: 1996년 2월에서 2003년 10월까지 본원에서 동종 조혈 모세포 이식을 받은 환자를 대상으로 후향적으로 조사하였다. 결과: 총 139명의 환자들이 조혈 모세포 이식을 시행 받았으며, 연령의 중앙값은 33.9세였고 추적관찰기간의 중앙값은 18.8개월이었으며, 감염성 합병증의 평균 발생빈도는 3.24±3.00회/인이었다. 총 450회의 감염증이 관찰되었고, 이 중 미생물학적으로 확인된 감염이 41.6%였으며 임상적으로 확인된 감염증은 34.0%, 불명열이 24.4%를 차지하였다. 감염성 합병증은 대부분 조기 회복기에 발생하였으며 전체의 39.6%가 이 시기에 발생하였고, 만기 회복기, 중간 회복기 순으로 각각 32.4%, 24.4%를 차지하였다. 미생물학적으로 확인된 감염의 187개의 사례 중에 세균감염이 94회였고, Coagulase-negative staphylococci가 15회로 가장 많이 분리되는 균종이었다. 미생물학적으로 확인된 감염 중 바이러스 감염은 78회로 41.7%를 차지하였으며, CMV감염증이 가장 많았다. 진균의 경우 전체 미생물학적으로 확인된 감염 중 7.5%를 차지하였으며, 이 중 Aspergillus spp.가 가장 많았다. 감염과 연관되어 사망한자 19명 중 12명(63.2%)이 만기회복기에 발생하였다. 감염성 사망률에 대한 위험요인으로는 기저 질환의 위험도, 호중구 감소 기간, 조혈 모세포 생착 실패, 급성/만성 이식 편대 숙주 반응등이 통계적으로 유의하게 나왔다(p<0.05). 결론: 급성/만성 이식 편대 숙주 반응과 연관하여 높은 감염성 사망률을 보였으며, 이는 특히 후기 감염과 연관된다. 또한, 진균감염 특히, candida 감염증의 빈도가 낮은 병원에서는 fluconazole 예방적 사용의 임상적 효과는 분명치 않다. Background: We wanted to investigate the effect of infectious complications on the outcome of patients who received allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and we determined the risk factors for predicting infectious complication and the mortality in allogeneic HSCT recipients. Methods: We enrolled all the patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT at Samsung Medical Center from February 1996 to October 2003. Results: A total of 139 patients were enrolled. A total of 450 infectious episodes were observed in 131 allogeneic recipients (90.8%). Infectious complications occurred in the allogeneic recipients [3.243.00 episodes/patient]. Microbiologically documented infection (MDI), clinically documented infection (CDI), and unknown fever (UF) accounted for 41.6%, 34.0% and 24.4%, respectively, of the total infections. Pneumonia (15.1%) was the most common infection. Among the 187 MDIs, bacterial infection, viral infection and fungal infection accounted for 50.3%, 39.6%, and 7.5%, respectively. Twelve of 24 deaths in the late post-transplantation period were related with infection. The statistically significant risk factors for infection related to mortality, by multivariate analysis, were the underlying disease risk, the duration of neutropenia, the failure of stem cell engraftment, acute GVHD, MDI, UF, the number of infectious episodes, bacteremia, fungemia, pneumonia, genitourinary tract infections, S. aureus, E. coli, Pseudomonas spp., Aspergillus spp., Non-albicans candida and CMV diseases. Conclusions: The incidence of fungal infections was still low in our institute, even though prophylaxis for fungal infections was not applied, except for gargling with nystatin. In addition, most of them were non-albican Candida and Aspergillus species. Therefore, routine fluconazole prophylaxis may not be needed in our institute. (Korean J Med 72:200-208, 2007)

      • <i>Gryllotalpicola soli</i> sp. nov., isolated from soil

        <P>A novel Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated and mesophilic strain, KIS12-7<SUP>T</SUP>, isolated from a soil sample collected from Daecheong-Island in Ongjin County, Republic of Korea, was studied using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the novel strain was a member of the genus <I>Gryllotalpicola</I>, showing more than 97.0 % sequence similarity with <I>Gryllotalpicola daejeonensis</I> RU-04<SUP>T</SUP> (98.0 %), <I>Gryllotalpicola koreensis</I> RU-16<SUP>T</SUP> (97.7 %) and <I>Gryllotalpicola kribbensis</I> PU-02<SUP>T</SUP> (97.3 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness values demonstrated that strain KIS12-7<SUP>T</SUP> could be clearly distinguished from closely related species of the genus <I>Gryllotalpicola</I>. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain KIS12-7<SUP>T</SUP> was of the type B2 and the acyl type was acetyl. The predominant menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-10. Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phosphoglycolipid, one unknown glycolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown lipid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.1 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, strain KIS12-7<SUP>T</SUP> is a representative of a novel species of the genus <I>Gryllotalpicola</I>, and the name <I>Gryllotalpicola</I> <I>soli</I> sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is KIS12-7<SUP>T</SUP> ( = DSM 27182<SUP>T</SUP> = KACC 17302<SUP>T</SUP> = NBRC 109659<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>

        Changes in Anti-Group A Rotavirus Antibody Seroprevalence and Levels in the Western Gyeongnam Province of Korea Over 16 Years

        <P>To observe how anti-group A rotavirus antibody seropositivity rates and levels have changed in the western region of Gyeongnam Province, 2,030 serum samples collected at four collection periods (1989-1990, 1994-1995, 1999-2000, and 2004-2005) were tested by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for IgG, and IgA antibodies reacting to recombinant VP6 protein. The seroprevalences exhibit no regular patterns over a 16-yr period. For all four collection periods, the anti-rVP6 IgG levels rose steadily during the first 5 months of life, after which they remained high. However, the 2-9 yr and 10-39 yr groups had significantly higher IgG levels in 1999-2000 and 2004-2005, respectively, than in the other collection periods. The 1-5 mo, 40- ≥ 60 yr, and 4-29 yr groups had significantly higher IgA levels in 1989-1990, 1999-2000, and 2004-2005, respectively. The 4 yr (25.0%), 5-9 yr (18.8%), 10-14 yr (41.1%), 20-29 yr (35.0%), and 30-39 yr (20.0%) groups in 2004-2005 had significant higher IgA seropositivity rate compared to the other three collection periods. These observations suggest that in the western region of Gyeongnam Province since the late 1990s, rotavirus reinfection has occurred more frequently than previously, with all ages being at risk.</P>

        A Study on the Longitudinal and Lateral Errors of Air Vehicle Heading for Auto-landing

        For the auto-landing operation of an air vehicle, the possibility of auto-landing operation should be first evaluated by testing the navigation performance through a flight test. In general, navigation performance is tested by analyzing north/east/down (NED) errors relative to reference equipment whose precision is about 8~10 times higher than that of a navigation system. However, to evaluate the auto-landing operation of an air vehicle, whether the air vehicle approaches a glide path aligned with the runway, within a specific error, needs to be examined rather than examining the north/east errors of the navigation system. Therefore, the longitudinal/lateral errors of air vehicle heading need to be analyzed. In this study, a method for analyzing the longitudinal/lateral errors of a navigation system was proposed as the navigation performance test method for evaluating the safety during the auto-landing of an air vehicle. Also, flight tests were performed six times, and the safety of auto-landing was examined by analyzing the performance using the proposed method.
