A serological survey was carried out for the detection of antibody of Bovine Leukemia Virus(BLV) in nothern parts of Chung Buk area. The results were summarized as followed. 1. The overall positive rate was revealed as high as 15% with 48 positive cases out of 319 heads examined. 2. According to age, cattle of 4 to 7 ages showed relatively higher positive rate of 15% than other ages. 3. Seasonal differences of positive rate were not recognized. 4. BLV antibody titer of scales of cattles that from 5 to 15 heads farm were the highest. 5. With the result of blood test that of BLV positive cattle, the number of WBC was slightly increased, but other records were normal.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the types of name spectrum and their characteristics of domestic fashion brand names focusing on women` wear and bisex wear, and also studied the differences based on the sex of brand target. 224 of women`s wear brands and 99 of bisex wear brands were selected from ``2002 Korea Fashion Yearbook`` under the criterion that their brand names were made in Korea and they should engage in business in 2002. The data analysis quatitatively evaluate the frequency and qualitatively evalute the image of brand product and the meaning of brand name. The result as follows; 1.The domestic fashion brands for women`s and bisex wear appeared to have to three types of name spectrum ; the descriptive name was the most frequently used one, then followed by the arbitrary, and the suggestive name. There were only one coined brand name and no generic brand name. 2. The characteristics of descriptive brand name was that, in most cases, it used the name of designer. For the suggestive brand name, it implied the features or the image of its products. For the arbitrary brand name, some bear the ideology or the foundation belief of company itself. 3. For women`s wear, the discriptive name appeared most, and followed by arbitrary, and the suggestive name. For bisex wear, the suggestive brand name appeared most, and followed by arbitrary name, and the discriptive name. 4. For descriptive brand name, the names of designer were used most in women`s wear brands. Otherwise, the brand names that directly described the image or the characteristics of products were used most in bisex wear brands. For suggestive brand name, soft and feminine images were prevailed in women`s wear brand names but comfotable and casual images were dominent in bisexsual brand names. For arbitrary brand name, as the various types of languages were combined and the various meanings and words were mixed, and imply the various meanings in both cases, it was hard to classify the characteristics into some categories.

The purpose of this study is to describe the living characteristics of the three generation family. It is a part of article series toward developing a three generation family apartment as a cultural housing model in Korea. A pilot study was done through interviews with both housewives of the younger generation and the elderly in 56 households. It was done to grasp generally and deeply the research contents for the main questionnaire survey. The main survey was done through a mailing whose respondents were 694 housewives of younger generation. Data were analyzed using the SPSS package. Major findings were as follows : Female elderly was most popular type. Married children tended to live together with the forced feeling of responsibility rather than with volunteering attitude. Many good points steming from three generation living together, however, were recognized by the housewives. This will be a good addition to re-estimate the value of the elderly in this industrial society. The younger generation had power in managing the various aspects in the household. They felt stress and expressed various undesirble behavioral adjustments and constraints in relation to the stress. Several planning concepts including privacy and storage space were suggested to enhance the quality of residential environment for the family.
Characteristics of Monascus sp. Isolated from Monascus Fermentation Products

To screen for the strains suitable for industrial applications, 15 Monacus sp. were isolated from various Monascus fermentation products. The isolated strains were belonging to Monascus pilosus, Monascus purpureus,Monascus albidulus, and Monascus femeus based on the ITS sequence and morphological characteristics. They produced globular and hyaline conidia, and red, orange, or hyaline ascomata except for M. fumeus, in which ascomata was not observed in malt extract media. Each strain produced monacolin K and citrinin at different levels on different media: 15.79-20.05 mg/L of monacolin K and 0-255 μg/L of citrinin in submerged culture of monacolin K producing media, 1.27-2.69 mg/L and about 507.4 μg/L in YES medium, 0-0.78 g/kg and 0-9.7 mg/kg in Monascus red rice products, suggesting that it is necessary to adopt the similar conditions to a specific application for screening as well. These various isolated strains would be great resources for industrial application to develop Monascus fermented functional products.
Polymorphisms in <i>PDE4D</i> are Associated with a Risk of COPD in Non-Emphysematous Koreans

<P>Despite extensive effort, only a few chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-associated genes have been suggested, indicating that there must be additional risk-associated loci. Here we aimed to identify additional COPD-associated SNPs and to explore the potential relationship between COPD subgroups and the SNPs in the Korean population. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 990 Korean individuals; 102 COPD cases and 544 controls for GWAS using Affymetrix SNP array 5.0, and 173 COPD cases and 171 controls for replication. After validating the candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), we performed subgroup analysis by disease phenotype. Through GWAS, we identified a novel SNP in the <I>phosphodiesterase-4D</I> (<I>PDE4D</I>) gene [rs16878037 (C>T), <I>p</I> = 1.66 ◊ 10<SUP>−6</SUP>] that was significantly associated with COPD. This signal in <I>PDE4D</I> was successfully replicated in the independent set (<I>p</I> = 0.041). When we combined the discovery and replication data, the association signal became more significant (<I>p</I> = 5.69 ◊ 10<SUP>−7</SUP>). In the COPD subgroup analysis, the T allele of rs16878037 was significantly more frequent in COPD patients without severe diffusion capacity impairment (mild mixed and obstruction-dominant group) than in patients with severe impairment (severe mixed and emphysema-dominant groups). This result supports that <I>PDE4D</I> polymorphisms might be involved in the susceptibility to COPD especially in non-emphysematous individuals and that they could also affect the responsiveness of the PDE4 inhibitor treatment.</P>
Detection and Identification of Vibrio Species Using Whole-Cell Protein Pattern Analysis

Outbreaks of foodborne diseases associated with Vibrio species such as V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, and V. cholerae frequently occur in countries having a dietary habit of raw seafood consumption. For rapid identification of different Vibrio species involved in foodborne diseases, whole-cell protein pattern analysis for 13 type strains of 12 Vibrio species was performed using SDS-PAGE analysis. Pathogenic Vibrio species such as V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. cholerae, V. alginolyticus, V. fluvialis, and V. mimicus were included in the 12 Vibrio species used in this study. Each of the 12 Vibrio species showed clearly specific band patterns of its own. Two different strains of V. parahaemolyticus showed two different SDS-PAGE wholecell protein patterns, giving the possibility of categorizing isolated strains in the same V. parahaemolyticus species into two subgroups. The 36 Vibrio isolates collected from sushi restaurants in Busan were all identified as V. parahaemolyticus by comparing their protein patterns with those of Vibrio type strains. The identified isolates were categorized into two different subgroups of V. parahaemolyticus. The whole-cell protein pattern analysis by SDS-PAGE can be used as a specific, rapid, and simple identification method for Vibrio spp. involved in foodborne diseases at the subspecies level.
