        Voice Mismatch Meets Neurolinguistics

This paper aims to investigate Korean advanced L2 English learners’ strategies for ellipsis resolution during sentence processing. Ellipsis resolution is known to involve several stages of information processing from the initial step of detecting an ellipsis-licensing element by the parser to the final stage of integrating the ellipsis site with the information retrieved from the antecedent of the ellipsis site. In examining these steps, we have manipulated three factors: (i) TP vs. VP-ellipsis; (ii) two types of discourse coherence relations (resemblance(-contrast) vs. cause-effect relations); (iii) voice match vs. mismatch. We found through the ERP recordings that voice mismatch in TP ellipsis elicited N400, followed by P600, irrespective of discourse coherence relations. In contrast, voice mismatch in VP-ellipsis registered N400 only in resemblance(-contrast) relation, but not in cause-effect relation. These findings lead us to conclude that Korean advanced L2 learners of English seem to undergo the full sequence of processing stages required for ellipsis resolution.

      • CuO-ZnO-Al₂O₃촉매상에서 메탄올의 수증기개질반응에 관한 연구

        The steam reforming of methanol was studied over CuO-ZnO-Al₂O₃catalyst at the range of temperatures between 150℃ and 300℃, the atmospheric pressure, the contact times between 0.04g cat h/mL and 0.1g cat h/mL and mole ratios of water/methanol between 0.67 and 1.5 in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. The conversion of methanol and the yield of H₂increased with the increase of pH in the precipitate solution and mole ratio of water/methanol. In the precipitate solution of pH 10, as the temperature increases especially above 250℃, the yield of H₂increased but the selectivity of H₂decreased due to side reaction. The activation energy of steam reforming of methanol was found to be 4.44 kcal/mol over CuO-ZnO-Al₂O₃catalyst at the mole ratio of Cu/Zn, 8:1.

        Renal artery stenosis is the one of causes of hypertension in a small percentage of all patients but is only anatomical cause that can be treated by means of surgery and percutanecous transluminal angioplasty. Angiography is the golden standard for diagnosis of renal artery stenosis, but a little invasive. With the advent of abdominal Doppler ultrasonography, renal artery stenosis could be diagnoed noninvasively. The experienced hands appears to be valuable in the doppler examination, ut some investigators consider it almost useless. The authors studied the effect of stenosis of renal artery on the downstream intrarenal blood flow, a snare was placed around renal artery in 12 rabbits and compressed to create stenosis while Doppler ultraonographic curve and flow index were obtained from main renal and interlobar arteries by means of placement of 10-MHz curved linear tranducer directly on the surface of kidney. The Doppler measurements were compared with the percentage of stenosis on angiograms. The results were as follow: 1. Ten satisfactory angiograms and Doppler ultrasonograms were obtained. 2. Three renal arteries were created stenosis below 70% (Group A), Seven were above 70% (Group B). 3. The ranges of RI (resistance index) were 0.61-0.86 (mean 0.78±0.154) at main renal arteries, 0.57-0.85 (mean 0.77±0.231) at interlobar artery. The range of PS (peak systolic velocity) were 13.1-28.8 (mean 21.65±4.445) m/sex at main renal artery, 5.2-18.1 (mean 11.74±4.095) m/sec at interlobar arteries. The RI of rabbits were higher than those of human (mean 0.58±0.05). 4. The range of RI in stenotic arteries of group B were 0.45-0.74 (mean 0.57±0.143) at main renal artery, 0.52-0.65 (mean 59±0.051) at interlobar arteries. The range of PS were 11.2-21.3 (mean 15.04±3.755) m/sec at main renal arte교, 5.7-11.3 (mean 8.24±2.056) at interlobar artery. The difference were statistical y significant (P=0.0302), but without remarkable change in group A. 5. Doppler ultrasonographic curve during progressive compression of renal artery showed dampened systolic waveform and diagonal upstroke at main renal arteries (71.4%) and interlobar arteries (85.7%) in group B, but without remarkable change in group A. 6. Release of the arterial compression caused higher than normal peak systolic velocity initially, at main renal arteries (42.9%) and interlobar arteries (28.6%). but the curve of all rabbits returned to normal within 5 minutes. The Doppler ultrasonographic index and curve were not changed on follow up Doppler ultrasonogram at 5 min. 10 min. 30 min. and 1 hour. The change of the systolic curves that compressed experimentally is identical to change in the pulsus tardus and parvus waveforms seen in both acute and chronic severe renal artery stenosis in humans, can helpul for the diagnosis of renal artery stenosis and the effects of treatment by percutaneous tranluminal angioplasty and surgery.

      • WDHA(Watery diarrhea, Hypokalemia, Achlorhydria) syndrome 1예

        저자들은 부갑상선절제술 이후에도 교정되지 않는 고칼슘혈증과 계속된 수양성 설사로 인한 하지마비 및 전신쇠약을 주소로 내원한 70세 남자환자에서 일반 화학검사, 호르몬 건사, 방사선 검사 등으로 VIPoma와 동반된 MEN Ⅰ으로 진단하여 외과적 절제술 후 수양성설사, 저칼슘혈증 및 고칼슘혈증이 호전된 1례를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Multiple endocrine neoplasia I (MEN Ⅰ) is a genetic disorder that consists of neoplasia of neuroendocrine type in the parathyroid glands, in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, and in the anterior pituitary gland. Primary hyperparathyroidism is most common feature of the MEN I and occurs is approximately 95% of patients. Pancreatic islet cell tumors occur in 40% of MEN I patients. Most of these tumors produce excessive amounts of hormone, such as gastrin, insulin, glucagon and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). VIP-producing pancreatic tumors (VIPoma) associated with MEN I are rare and there was only one case report in Korea so far. Recently we experienced a case of MEN I, especially VIPoma presented in a 70 year old man. He got subtotal parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism 5 months ago, but his symptoms of watery diarrhea, severe general weakness and paralysis of lower limbs were not improved and hypercalcemia, hypokalemia were persisted. On computerized tomography scan of abdomen, demonstrated a mass of 3㎝ in diameter at the tail of pancreas. Serum level of VIP hormone was 250pg/㎖ (normal range : 0∼23pg/㎖). After partial pancreatectomy, his symptoms were improved dramatically and biochemical parameters such as, serum potassium, calcium, and VIP returned to the normal ranges.

      • 一般 人口群의 紅疫抗體에 對한 血淸學的 硏究

        홍역은 유행성이 크고 감염성이 강한 어린이 질환중의 하나인데, 1965년부터 구미에서는 집단접종을 시행하여 이환율 합병증 사망율이 현저히 감소되었다. 그러나 홍역예방접종이 잘된 선진국에서도 어린 나이 및 학동기 사춘기 및 젊은 성인층에서 홍역감염이 보고되고 있기에 일반인구군의 홍역항체의 분포가 홍역발생 가능성을 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다고 생각되었다. 이에 저자는 영국 Oxford지역의 여러 연령층으로 나누어 홍역항체를 측정하였다. 사용한 방법은 보체결합반응과 간접 면역형광항체법 두가지 방법으로 동시에 측정하였다. 두 방법에 의한 홍역항체보유율의 경향은 비스하여 생후 6개월∼1세미만의 연령군의 홍역항체보유율이 가장 낮고, 그 다음은 1세∼5세 연령군이 낮았다. 또 홍역보체결합항체의 geometric mean titer는 연령과 더불어 증가하고, 홍역의 유행이 보고된 연령군 즉 학동기 및 젊은 연령층에서 다른 연령층과 비교시 낮은 역가를 나타내었다. 홍역항체 보유 여부에 관한 집단조사에서 간접면역형광법은 편리하게 이용될 수 있는 예민한 방법이라 생각되었다. One hundred sera from general population which were obtained at Virus Laboratory, John Rdacliffe Hospital, Oxford, U.K. during the period from January to June, 1979 were studied with Complement Fixation (CF) test and indirect Immunofluorescence (IF) test for measles virus in order to understand its epidemiologic behavior in immunized community. The results showed that the group of infants between 6 month to under 1 year was the lowest by 31.6∼61.1% at measles antibodies positivity by both methods. The group of children between 1 year to 5 years was the next lowest by 60∼80% as expected by immunization, but not quite complete to prevent sporadic outbreaks of minor size. The other age groups were observed to have very high positivity around 87.5∼100% in general. Besides, it was found from the above results that indirect IF test is a good method for mass survey for measles virus antibodies as sensitive and easy as CF test, but not as time-comsuming.

        한국판-Gilliam 자폐증 평정척도-2(K-GARS-2) 표준화 연구

        Objectives:Autism is one of the most important developmental disorder of childhood, which has been studied in many fields of research. The importance of early detection, diagnosis and early treatment of autism has been emphasized in Korea. However, appropriate diagnostic tools to meet these needs, were insufficient. With increasing number of autistic adults, a need for diagnostic tool which can cover wide range of age has emerged. The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2(GARS-2) is based on Autism Society of America and DSM-IV-TR(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fourth Edition-Text Revision) diagnostic criteria for autism. It is the only available test so far. The target age of this test is from 3 years to 22 years old with autism, therefore this test is thought to be valuable. In this study, Korean-Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2(K-GARS-2) was standardized, and verified the reliability, validity. Methods:K-GARS-2 was standardized and the reliability, validity was evaluated for 109 patients with autism aged 3 to 22 years. Results:Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of K-GARS-2 is 0.94 in the total 42 items and reliability was verified. KGARS-2 standard scores were highly correlated with scores of CARS and also Items-discrimination coefficients also showed a high correlation. Autism subscale standard score and the Autism quotient also showed a strong correlation. When compared with the other mental disorder groups, autism group show significantly higher scores. Conclusion:With the increasing prevalence of autism, the importance of accurate diagnosis and therapeutic approach is increasing in Korea. In this perspective, K-GARS-2 standardization process is very meaningful.

      • Cytomegalovirus 일차감염의 혈청학적 진단을 위한 면역글로브린 M과 E 측정방법들의 비교연구

        Sera from 110 children hospitalized with various disease were tested for detection of IgM and IgE antibodies against cytomegalovirus with 5 different EIA methods. Such as the indirect IgM EIA, the antibody capture IgM EIA, the double sandwich IGM EIA, the IgG remove IgM EIA and the indirect IgE EIA. And the methods were compared with each other on terms of positivity rate, mean OD, sensitivity and time consumed according to the obtained data. The results are as follows. 1. The antibody capture IgM EIA method is the most sensitive test for detection of CMV primary infection with sera. The positive reation was evident even to naked eye by its orange color. 2. The antibody capture IgM EIA method seemed necessary of longest time to finish because it involves 2 steps of reaction. 3. The IgG remove IgM EIA method was relatively sensitive and necessary of less time finish compare to others. 4. The antiboby capture IgM EIA method was found to be most sensitive over others for detection of CMV primary infection showing positivity by 37/110(33.6%). 5. Almost same positivites in the double sandwich IgM EIA method (21/110,19.1%) and the IgG remove IgM EIA method (25/110,22.7%) for detection to CMV primary infection were observed. 6. The indirect IgM EIA method showed the lowest positivity by (15/110,13.6%) but seemed necessary of least time to finish. 7. The indirect IgE EIA method showed the lowest positivity (14/110,12.7%) for the detection of CMV primary infection. According to above results, it indicated that the antibody capture IgM EIA and the IgG remove IgM EIA-combined serologic method is the most accurate test for detection of CMV primary infetion among the five methods.

      • Polymerase chain reaction으로 설사 영유아 대변 검체에서 adenovirus type 40, 41의 분리 동정

        Adenovirus is the second leading cause of acute gastroenteritis. As the children with diarrhea by acute adenoviral gastroentertis usually require hospitalization, rapid diagnosis is necessary for proper management. Adenovirus infection can be diagnosed conventionally by the direct electron microscopic observation of the virus particle, isolation of the virus by cell culture, or enzyme immuno assay. Recently, polymerase chain reaction is applied for the detection of adenovirus. In this study, we investigated stools collected from 100 children hospitalized for diarrhea in Ewha womans University Hospital from the September of 1995 to the July of 1996 for adenovirus by polymerase chain reaction. Two oligonucleotide primers, desiginated as hexAA1885 and hexAA1913, were used for the detection of enteric adenovirus type 40 an 41 in PCR. After amplification pf 35 cycles, 300 bp fragments were detected on 1.8% Sea Kem GT agar gel in 14 samples. The stool samples were further analyzed by electron microscopy and immunoblotting. In electron microscopy, icosahedral particles of about 75nm were observed in a^7 of the 14 samples. The 14 samples were collected from children whose mean age was 1.4 years and the sex ratio was 10/4(M/F). The seasonal variation showed acute gastroenteritis by adenovirus infection was frequent in March to May and in September to October in Korea.
