        Flavonoids extracted from Linaria vulgaris protect against hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis induced by western-type diet in mice

        Previous studies have shown that flavonoids (Fs) present in Linaria vulgaris inhibit lipid accumulation in vitro. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Fs extracted from Linaria vulgaris ssp. sinensis (Bebeaux) Hong, on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis induced by a western-type diet in mice. The major constituents of Fs were analyzed by LC–MS analysis. C57BL/6 mice were fed a western-type diet for 8 weeks to induce hyperlipidemia (model group), or fed a western-type diet followed by Fs treatment (90, 30 or 10 mg/kg/day) or atorvastatin treatment (1.0 mg/kg/day), for 8 weeks. It was found that Fs treatment resulted in significant reductions in serum levels of AST, ALT, TC, TG, LDL-C, free fatty acid and hepatic TC, and TG compared to those in model mice with hyperlipidemia (P < 0.05). The mice treated with Fs showed a relatively normal hepatic architecture compared to the hepatic steatosis shown in the model group. Moreover, the expressions of mature forms of sterol regulatory element–binding proteins (nuclear form of srebps, n-SREBPs) and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme reductase (HMGCR) involved in lipid metabolism, were suppressed in the Fs-treated groups. Taken together, these results suggest Fs exert protective effects against hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis, which may involve the inhibition of mature SREBPs expressions.

        Self-mixing gas leakage detection of tank based on Er3þ eYb3þ codoped Distributed Bragg Reflector fiber laser

        In this paper we present a novel method of gas leakage detection based on self-mixing interference with an extremely compact Er3þ eYb3þ codoped Distributed Bragg Reflector (EYDBR) fiber laser. According to the simulation and theoretical analysis of gas leakage of tank, we infer that the vibration frequency peak of tank caused by gas leakage increases with the internal pressure. In the experiment, the results agree with the theoretical prediction and the relevance of polynomial fitting about the spectrum peak of tank vibration and internal pressure is 0.99725. Thus, we can get the internal pressure of tank by measuring the vibration frequency peak of tank. Moreover, it has important significance in the prevention of the accident of flammable or explosive gas leakage.

        A Slurry Consolidation Method for Reconstitution of Triaxial Specimens

        In this paper, a modified slurry consolidation approach to reconstitute triaxial specimens was developed within an experimental program to study the influence of drying-wetting on the cyclic behaviors of unsaturated soils. The uniformity of the reconstituted specimens was assessed by measuring the dry density, water content, grain size distribution and the soil water characteristic curve throughout the specimens. Additionally, the static and cyclic triaxial tests were performed to further verify the ability of this new slurry consolidation method for preparing identical specimens. All the test results report very small differences between specimens. The slurry consolidation approach presented herein can produce specimens with a high initial degree of saturation of about 96%, expediting the subsequent saturation process. Finally, the cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on the unsaturated soils to investigate the influence of drying-wetting on the cyclic behaviors of unsaturated soils. Drying-wetting has an irreversible influence on the cyclic behaviors of unsaturated soils. The cyclic strength is increased after drying-wetting.

        CNN-based Skip-Gram Method for Improving Classification Accuracy of Chinese Text

        Text classification is one of the fundamental techniques in natural language processing. Numerous studies are based on text classification, such as news subject classification, question answering system classification, and movie review classification. Traditional text classification methods are used to extract features and then classify them. However, traditional methods are too complex to operate, and their accuracy is not sufficiently high. Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) based one-hot method has been proposed in text classification to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose an improved method using CNN based skip-gram method for Chinese text classification and it conducts in Sogou news corpus. Experimental results indicate that CNN with the skip-gram model performs more efficiently than CNN-based one-hot method.

      • The Most Frequent Formulaic Sequences In College Engineering Textbooks

        This research describes an attempt to establish a pedagogically useful list of the most frequent formulaic sequences for engineering undergraduates who need to read the textbooks of their fields in English. The Engineering English Formulae/Formulaic Sequences List (EEFL) was derived from a corpus containing 4.57 million tokens of one hundred college textbooks across twenty engineering subjects. In consideration of formulae for widespread use and pedagogical relevance, a series of criteria were applied. Comparable to a list of 1,000 high-frequency individual words, a total of 1,000 two- to six-word sequences were selected into the EEFL and they accounted for 25.73% of the running words in the Engineering Textbook Corpus. The EEFL, not highly technical in nature, contains the most commonly-used multi-word units traversing the subfields of the engineering domain and engineering majors may encounter these word sequences very often. For matriculating engineering students, the present EEFL and the EEWL (Engineering English Word List common to engineering subjects) may be mutually complementary in providing a pathway to the engineering register and may be helpful for ESP teachers without a background of science and technology when preparing engineering English teaching materials for an EST course required by most engineering-related departments.

        In this paper, the authors investigate the condition number with their condition numbers for weighted Moore-Penrose inverse and weighted least squares solution of min x kAx − bkM, where A is a rank-deficient complex matrix in Cm×n and b a vector of length m in Cm, x a vector of length n in Cn. For the normwise condition number, the sensitivity of the relative condition number itself is studied, the componentwise perturbation is also investigated.

        Evaluation of monthly environmental loads from municipal wastewater treatment plants operation using life cycle assessment

        Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology can be used to assess impacts on the environment that might be generated during treatment of wastewater and sludge treatment. In this work, LCA methodology was suggested to evaluate monthly environmental impact of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Two field scale WWTPs, A2/O process and conventional activated sludge process (CAS), were selected as target plants and the operational data were collected from those plants. As the function units, the unit volume of treated wastewater of 1 m³ and 1 kg T-N eq. removed were selected. The environmental effect of target WWTPs operation were assessed as impact categories such as global warming potential, eutrophication potential, and so on. From monthly profiles of each index, it was shown that the environmental impact of WWTPs has seasonal patterns influenced by the influent flow rate variation causing higher impacts in winter than summer. This is due to the fact that there were no significant increase in the electricity consumption and chemical usage during the summer while the treated volume of wastewater was increased.

        Quantitative validation of the analytical mode shapes of a beam-like structure with a Z-shaped configuration

        Beam-like structures are widely used in engineering. The accuracy of the analytical mode shapes of these structures is important for studying their dynamic characteristics. A method is presented in this study to theoretically obtain and quantitatively validate the analytical mode shapes of a beam-like structure with a Z-shaped configuration. The governing equations and boundary conditions of the structure’s planar motion are derived using Hamilton’s principle. Frequencies and analytical mode shapes of the structure are theoretically obtained and compared with the numerical results from finite element method. The comparison of frequencies and modal assurance criterion is used to quantitatively validate the analytical mode shapes. Examples are presented to show the analytical mode shapes of Zshaped beams with different fold angles. The proposed method is useful for improving the accuracy of analytical mode shapes, which is beneficial to the design and control of beam-like structures in engineering fields.

        Influence of Initial Moisture and Reactive MgO Content on Mechanical and Microstructural Characteristics of Carbonated Reactive Magnesia Treated Soft Clay

        Soft clay presents many problems in the construction of infrastructures, which can be well solved by using effective solidification materials and technologies. The carbonated reactive magnesia (CRM) comes to the fore for its superiority in energy-saving and high solidification efficiency. Nevertheless, research on the applicability of CRM in soft clay solidifying is limited. In the current study, two major factors, including initial moisture content (w0) and reactive MgO content (Cm), were examined by measuring the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), mass and volume variations, and moisture content variation of CRM-treated soft clay. The intrinsic mechanisms were discussed based on the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests. The findings reveal that carbonated specimens with low Cm (≤ 25%) or w0 (≤ 25%) suffer from severe volumetric expansion and cracks, which cause serious reductions in UCS, and the strength of these specimens can be even much lower than that of the uncarbonated ones. Specimens with high Cm and w0 acquire satisfactory strength by carbonation, and the highest UCS can exceed 4 MPa, indicating that the CRM is capable of solidifying soft clay. Water and MgO are both vital for the crystallization of hydrated magnesium carbonates (HMCs), and Cm is also beneficial for restricting volumetric expansion and reducing macropores; while proper w0 is required for the formation and evolution of HMCs, especially the nesquehonite.
