        Research Development of Preload Technology on Angular Contact Ball Bearing of High Speed Spindle: A Review

        Preload of angular contact ball bearing (ACBB) is extremely important to high speed spindle, which has a great infl uence on the spindle’s dynamic and thermal characteristics, etc. In this paper, the preload source of ACBB; the main preload principles, methods and their advantages and disadvantages; research progress and development trend of preload device are discussed. On the basis, common criteria for computing and choosing optimal preload; infl uence of preload on dynamic and thermal properties of bearing and spindle system are discussed as well. The purposes of this paper are to clarify the research idea of preload, and provide a reference for accurately calculating the bearing stiff ness under sophisticated conditions, precisely controlling dynamic parameters of high speed spindle, designing preload device with excellent dynamic performance, etc.

        The Correlation between Thyrotropin and Dyslipidemia in a Population-based Study

        This study investigated the relationship between serum thyrotrophin levels and dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects. A total of 110 subjects with subclinical hypothyroidism and 1,240 euthyroid subjects enrolled in this study. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism had significantly lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than those who were euthyroid. The lipid profiles were each categorized and mean thyrotrophin levels were higher in subjects in the dyslipidemia subclasses than subjects in the normal subclasses. Thyrotrophin was positively associated with serum triglyceride and negatively associated with serum HDL-C in women. Thyrotrophin was also positively associated with total cholesterol (TC) in the overweight population along with TC and LDL-C in overweight women. In the euthyroid population, thyrotrophin was positively associated with TC in the overweight population. In conclusion, serum thyrotrophin was correlated with dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects; the correlation was independent of insulin sensitivity.

      • MicroRNA-497 Suppresses Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in Prostate Cancer Cells

        MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of endogenously expressed small, non-coding, single-stranded RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression, mainly by binding to 3'- untranslated regions (3'UTR) of their target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), which cause blocks of translation and/or mRNA cleavage. Recently, miRNAprofiling studies demonstrated the microRNA-497 (miR-497) level to be down-regulated in all prostate carcinomas compared with BPH samples. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential role of miR-497 in human prostate cancer. Proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis assays were conducted to explore the potential function of miR-497 in human prostate cancer cells. Results showed that miR-497 suppressed cellular growth and initiated G0/G1 phase arrest of LNCaP and PC-3 cells. We also observed that miR-497 increased the percentage of apoptotic cells by increasing caspase-3/7 activity. Taken together, our results demonstrated that miR-497 can inhibit growth and induce apoptosis by caspase-3 activation in prostate cancer cells, which suggest its use as a potential therapeutic target in the future.

        A Resilience Model for Engineered Slopes Subject to Anchor Corrosion

        Many high engineered slopes are stabilized using anchors, which may corrode over time. Proper maintenance is essential to recover the system performance and upkeep slope functions. This paper presents a resilience model for maintenance decision by analysing the degradation of an anchor-stabilized slope due to corrosion and evaluating the recovery of slope performance after maintenance. Failure probability is used as an indicator to characterize the evolution of slope performance within its service life. The timing for maintenance is determined when the failure probability reaches an intolerable value. Information obtained from regular inspections is used to reduce the uncertainty in the determined maintenance time. The effectiveness of possible repair schemes is measured by a resilience index for the slope attained after maintenance, which considers the reduction in the failure probability and the duration over which the failure probability remains acceptable. A benefit index, which incorporates both the effectiveness and cost of a repair measure, is defined and used to quantitatively evaluate possible maintenance schemes. The proposed model is illustrated using an anchor-stabilized rock slope example, which provides a means to quantitatively assess different repair measures and enables engineers to select an effective and economic measure for slope maintenance.

        The Antifungal Mechanism of Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water against Aspergillus flavus

        Fungicidal electrolyzed oxidizing waters (EOW)include neutralized electrolyzed oxidizing water (NEW)and acidic electrolyzed oxidizing water (AcEW). Theseforms were evaluated against Aspergillus flavus conidia(spores) and mycelia. EOW possessed strong antifungalactivities against A. flavus conidia and mycelia due todestruction of the cellular structures of the A. flavusconidium and mycelium. K+ and Mg2+ leakage results fromdamage to the normal cellular functions of A. flavus conidiaand mycelia. Among the physicochemical parameters ofEOW, the available chlorine concentration (ACC) isprimarily responsible for the EOW antifungal activity. A. flavus can be eliminated by use of AcEW and NEW as anew, alternative method of fungal control that is superior tosome current physical methods and to synthetic chemicalfungicides.

      • Applying Hyperspectral and Fluorescence Imaging to Assess Characteristics of Animal and Plant Oil Mixture

        Milk fat is one of the most important animal oils in the food industry due to its high nutritional value and market cost. However, when affected by adulteration, it leads to economic loss for food manufacturers, and moreover, causing harm to human health. This research demonstrates the application of hyperspectral and fluorescence imaging in assessing the concentration of animal and plant oil mixture. Milk fat samples were adulterated with different plant oil samples at different concentrations. Spectrum analysis was performed using hyperspectral imaging and fluorescence imaging with light source excitation obtained from an Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM). A model was developed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to determine what kind of plant oil is being adulterated, while Support Vector Regression (SVR) was used to determine the actual concentration of the oil mixture. This technique can serve as a rapid detection tool to help speed up the traditional inspection process.

      • A Comparison Study of Beauty Education and Training between Taiwan and Korea

        In this study, the vocational training and strategies of beauty education in Korea and Taiwan are the main variables to explore the era of knowledge economy. The development of process and strategy in vocational education and training was investigated by researchers in the Korean beauty technical school and Taiwanese beauty technical school on the high educational level. Data collection in this study used field visits to confirm the status and strategy of vocational education and training of beauty in the Korean and Taiwanese universities. Then, each variable was analyzed by SPSS. Eventually, this study found that the success from vocational education and training of beauty in the Korean and Taiwanese Universities was influenced by several factors including created a unique vocational educational model, established a multi-level, multi-level, multi-category, pre-service, and on-the-job vocational education and training network.

      • A Study on the Comparison of Real and VR 3D Simulated Rubika`s Cube Game Performance

        This study is meant to explore the gender, experience and interface effect of the Rubik`s Cube game performance. There were 55 sixth-grade pupils, 29 male and 26 female aged between 11 and 12, from Shu-Lin elementary school, Taiwan, participated the experiment. A 2 (gender)x2 (experience/ inexperience)x3 (real/ mouse/ touch-pad) mixed-factor experimental design was allocated. The former two factors are between-subject while the latter is within-subject design. As the experiment result analysis indicated, the main effect of gender, experience, and interface were all significant. However, there was no any two-way and three-way interaction among the factors. On the interface effect, the order of the performance is real>mouse>touchpad, suggesting that more effort on better interface design for Rubik`s Cube is needed. Male is superior to the female, and experienced performed better than the inexperience, on the test. This research provides an example on the correlative insight among the multi-factors of experience, gender and interface of the pupils` spatial performance by Rubik`s Cube test. The study outcome would benefit the related development and research of interface design for children.

        Incongruent Expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor and Cortisol in Schizophrenia: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial of Laughter Intervention

        Objective Schizophrenia has been associated with dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Furthermore, alterations in neurotrophic factors might contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. We aimed to evaluate the effects of a simulated laughter intervention on the levels of cortisol and BDNF and to determine whether the effects associated with simulated laughter could be sustained after discontinuation of the intervention. Methods In this randomized controlled study, patients with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV clinical criteria were randomly assigned to receive either 8-week-long simulated laughter intervention (n=32) or treatment-as-usual group (control group, n=27). The serum levels of BDNF and cortisol were measured at baseline, week 8, and four weeks after discontinuation (week 12) of the intervention program. Results After an 8-week simulated laughter intervention, the laughter group had significantly higher levels of BDNF; however, four weeks after discontinuation of the intervention, the levels of BDNF significantly dropped. Interestingly, the levels of cortisol did not change significantly at week 8, but they were significantly elevated at week 12. The levels of BDNF and cortisol in the control group did not change significantly between week 0 and week 8. Conclusion These findings suggest that the simulated laughter intervention has an early effect on neurogenesis with a significant delayed effect on stress regulation in subjects with schizophrenia.
