A major attempt made in this study was to explore the inherent meaning noteded in Chu Hsi(주자) concept of educated person and moral autonomy. Chu Hsi views education essentially as a function of realizing the nature of heavenly principle(T'ien-li천리) through exhaustive exploration of basics by way of ch'iung-li(궁리). In Chu Hsi, self-actualization is used as a term with connotation that man is equated with heaven as co-creator, thus the meaning of educated person is to realize unity between heaven and man. He emphasizes more on role of educaton in learning to be Sage. In Chu Hsi's view on education, moral autonomy is valued as an assess of 'educated person' rather as component in the educational process. He equates moral autonomy to the level of Tao-hsin(도심) so long as it is practiced in compliance with the universal and natural principle of morality. It is in this context that moral autonomy is noted as logical requirement of Li and outstanding quality of a Sage, a model of 'educated person'.

The Process Safety Management (PSM) by the Law of Industry, Safety and Health has been performed for preventing major accidents of chemical plants since 1996. In terms of preventing chemical accidents more precisely, it is essential to develop a tool for quantitative risk assessment. For this, KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency) developed an Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS) . The system is designed to assimilate data on chemical plant hazards from external database, to integrate these data with location information (topographic and demographic), and to make them user-friendly accessible. The system consists of several main functions: display of five major Korean petrochemical complex layout, display of equipment layout with its information utilizing the external database, zonation of the hazard effected area with consequence analyses, the most probable accident scenario generation, accident/incident database and calculation of frequency of accident using equipment reliability database, etc. The highlight of IRMS is to provide the risk contours using GIS(Geographical Information System) technology. IRMS is intended to manage hazardous installation more systematically and effectively, to reduce the number of accident remarkably, further minimizing production loss in the plant. The system is now under application to about 500 PSM sites as well as and emergency authorities in Korea by KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency)

Overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) is related to tumor progression and xenotransplantability in various human solid tumors, but the specific impact of the VEGF-subtypes is still under discussion. The aim of this study was to analyse a possible association of the major VEGF-isoforms and the growth characteristics of xenotransplanted human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma tumors in nude mice. Seven squamous cell carcinoma cell lines were analysed by quantitative RT-PCR using the Taqman^(TM)-System. We investigated the expression of VEGF-total-mRNA and of the major subtypes VEGF-121, -165, and -189 by using subtype specific primers. The cell lines were xenotransplanted in three mice each, and the data of tumor growth and progression were correlated to the expression of VEGF-isoforms. We also investigated an "growth response rate" measured by tumor growth per detected VEGF-level. Six out of the seven cell lines analysed expressed all isoforms of VEGF in different quantities. One cell line expressed generally low levels of VEGF and no VEGF-189 at all, In this cell line xenotransplantation failed in one mice out of three. In a second cell line transplantation failed in one out of seven mice, too. Success rates for the other five cell lines were 100%. The cell lines with higher transplantation success were expressing higher VEGF-121/165-189 ratios comparing to those without success. In contrast, linearity of tumor growth and lack of necrosis were associated with a lower VEGF-121/165-189 ratio. The findings demonstrate a predominant expression of VEGF-165 and VEGF-189, compared VEGF-121. In highly proliferating tumors this rate appeared to be about 10 times higher than in low proliferating tumors. We conclude that the ratio between the VEGF-subtypes during tumor implantation and growth is a prerequisite for progression and hypothesize an individual and different response of each tumor cell line to VEGF.

Single and 4 weeks oral administration of New Woohwangchungsimwon (NWCH) which was used l-muscone as substitutive material of musk, to beagle dogs of both sexes were performed to investigate both acute and subacute toxicity. Beagle dogs(3 males and 3 females) in acute experiments were administered orally with single dose of 2,000 ㎎/㎏ and groups of 9 male and 9 female beagle dogs in subacute experiments were given daily different dosage of NWCH, 160 ㎎/㎏/day(low dosage group), 400 ㎎/㎏/day (middle dosage group), 1,000 ㎎/㎏/day (high dosage group) once a day for 4 weeks by oral route according to the Established Regulation of Korea Food and Drug Administration (1996. 4. 16). LD_50 value for beagle dogs was more than 2,000 ㎎/㎏ per oral for both male and females. In animals administered with NWCH, there were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical sign, urinalysis, eye examination, hematology, serum chemistry, organ weight and other fingings. No histological lesions were observed in both control and treatment groups. Above data strongly suggset that NWCH in beagle dogs is considered to be safe.

The acute and subacute toxicity of New Woohwangchungsimwon(NWCH) which was used l-muscone as substitutive material of musk were investigated in S.D. rats. In intraperitoneal acute toxicity test, rats(Sprague-Dawley, SPF) were injected intraperitoneally with dosages of 0, 540, 750, 1,070, 1,500 and 3,000 ㎎/㎏. Body weights were significantly decreased at 540 ㎎/㎏ dose group in both sexes and abnormal autopsy findings were founded in both sexes at all treated groups. Intraperitoneal LD_50 of NWCH was 812.3 ㎎/㎏ in male and 872.3 ㎎/㎏ in female rats. In the subacute toxicity study, NWCH was administrated orally to both sexes of rats for 4 weeks as several doses(0, 320, 800 and 2,000 ㎎/㎏). There were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemical analysis, and other findings. Above data strongly suggest that no observed adverse effect level of NWCH might be over 2,000 ㎎/㎏/day in this study.
