      • Prognostic Significance of Hes-1, a Downstream Target of Notch Signaling in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Background: Hairy and enhancer of split 1 (Hes-1) protein is a downstream target of Notch signaling and is a basic helix-loop-helix transcriptional repressor. However, definitive evidence for a role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells has not been reported. Here, Hes-1 was revealed to an important component of the Notch signaling cascade in HCC cell lines possessing different potential for lung metastasis. Materials and Methods: RNAi mediated by plasmid constructs was used to analyze the role of Hes-1 in MHCC-97L HCC cells by assessing proliferation, apoptosis, cell migration and matrigel invasion following transfection. Hes-1 protein expression analysis in HCC tissue was also conducted by immunohistochemistry. Results: Our studies revealed that Hes-1 was decreased in HCC cell lines with higher lung metastasis potential at both the mRNA and protein levels. Down-regulation of the Hes-1 gene in MHCC-97L cells resulted in increased cell proliferation, reduced apoptosis and increased migration and invasion. Conclusions: Hes-1 has potential prognostic value in post-surgical HCC patients and may be an independent prognostic indicator for overall survival and tumor recurrence. These findings have important implications for understanding the mechanisms by which Hes-1 participates in tumor proliferation and invasion.

        Active mass driver control system for suppressing wind-induced vibration of the Canton Tower

        In order to suppress the wind-induced vibrations of the Canton Tower, a pair of active mass river (AMD) systems has been installed on the top of the main structure. The structural principal directions n which the bending modes of the structure are uncoupled are proposed and verified based on the rthogonal projection approach. For the vibration control design in the principal X direction, the simplified odel of the structure is developed based on the finite element model and modified according to the field measurements under wind excitations. The AMD system driven by permanent magnet synchronous linear otors are adopted. The dynamical models of the AMD subsystems are determined according to the pen-loop test results by using nonlinear least square fitting method. The continuous variable gain feedback VGF) control strategy is adopted to make the AMD system adaptive to the variation in the intensity of wind excitations. Finally, the field tests of free vibration control are carried out. The field test results of AMD control show that the damping ratio of the first vibration mode increases up to 11 times of the original value without control.

      • The study of theoretical method for improving the spatial resolution of satellite images with CCD cameras

        By the integrating satellite hardware's design with ground software's processing, the article presents a new theoretical method fox improving the spatial resolution of satellite image. Computer simulations under different resolution levels are carried out on simulated target images, common scenery images and Remote Sensing images separately. The success results of experimental simulations show clearly the method for improving resolution we present is valid in theory, which also proved the theoretic feasibility to enhance the spatial resolution of satellite images up to twice, even N times. Obviously, practical applications of the research will enhance the spatial resolution of satellite images. In addition, it can also help shorten optical instruments' focus, decrease satellite camera's size and mass while remaining the same spatial resolution of satellite images.

        There are some difficulties in the process of integration of remote sensing, geographical information system and global positioning system (so called $quot;3S$quot;), because the space data based in different coordinates and geodetic datums. Some coordinates and geodetic datums, which are usually used in our work and research, are discussed in this paper. There are two methods were developed to convers the space data and merits and demerits of each method were discussed as well.

        Genetic Diversity of a Novel Oil Crop, Camellia brevistyla, Revealed by ISSR DNA Markers

        Camellia brevistyla plants are used as food oil in Taiwan. To provide a method for identifying germplasm and assessing the genetic diversity of C. brevistyla , 102 individuals were collected from 29 populations in 11 counties throughout the main island of Taiwan. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) DNA markers were analyzed and a total of 176 bands were amplified. Of these, 175 bands were found to be polymorphic in these populations. Genetic similarities among populations ranged between 34.1-95.1%. Cluster analysis revealed seven groups of populations plus one outlier (C. kissii ). Five individuals from two populations in the southern region were grouped into cluster V, and six populations from both regions were grouped into cluster VII. The remaining populations from the northern region were separated into different clusters from V and VII. Results of an analysis of molecular variance indicated that the variation within populations (75%) was predominantly greater than variations among counties (18%) and among regions (7%). Overall, the gene flow (Nm = 0.509) estimated from genetic differentiation (Gst = 0.534) suggested that gene flow among regions was limited. Higher genetic diversity (H = 0.317), Shannon’s index (I = 0.477), and gene flow (Nm = 0.538) of populations were found in the northern region compared to the southern region. The DNA sequences of C. brevistyla amplified by two oil-biosynthesis genes showed 99-100% homology with those of C. oleifera. Camellia brevistyla populations are highly differentiated and can serve as a basis for the food oil industry as a germplasm resource.

        Positive Symptoms in Antipsychotic-naïve Schizophrenia are Associated with Increased Body Mass Index after Treatment

        Objective: Weight gain is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality among patients with schizophrenia. We speculated that positive symptoms, related to dopaminergic hyperactivity and altered mesolimbic function, are associated with weight gain. Methods: Twenty-two antipsychotic-naïve, first-episode patients with schizophrenia were enrolled. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was completed at enrollment and follow-up. Body mass index (BMI) was also measured. Results: The increase in BMI, after 6.04 ± 2.16 years of follow-up, was associated with positive symptoms, but not negative symptoms, before treatment with antipsychotics in antipsychotic-naïve patients with schizophrenia. Conclusion: This finding implied that dopaminergic hyperactivity could be an important factor to predict the treatment outcome. Body weight control is important for the health management of patients with schizophrenia with more severe positive symptoms.

        Effect of Prior Microstructures on Cementite Dissolution Behavior During Subcritical Annealing of High Carbon Steels

        The variation of the morphology and distribution of cementite particles in different prior structures with spheroidizingannealing process has been proceeded in this paper. It is found that the dissolution and coarsening progresses of variousinitial structures in spheroidizing annealing process are quite asynchronous due to the different interlamellar spacing. Thedissolution rate of degenerated pearlite (D-P) with finer interlamellar spacing is faster. The granular cementite in the spheroidizedmicrostructure is fine, uniform and dense. The mean diameter of spherical cementite is refined to 233 nm. However,the initial structure of degenerated pearlite (D-P) is highly sensitive to the austenitization temperature. The cementite iseasy to be coarsened under high austenitizing temperature. The coarsening is accompanied by the gradual increase of theCr content in the cementite, which increases the stability of the cementite. Therefore, the optimal austenitizing temperaturefor degenerated pearlite (D-P) is suggested to be 770 °C.

        Vocabulary Characteristics of Children with High and Low Functioning Autism and Intellectual Disabilities

        배경 및 목적: 비장애 아동의 경우 표현 가능한 어휘보다 수용 어휘가 높은 것에 비해, 자폐성 아동의 경우 공식검사 결과에서 수용어휘 결과가 낮게 보고 되고 있다. 새로운 낱말을 실제 사물과 연결시킬 때, 자폐성 장애 아동은 다른 비장애 아동과 같이 상호배타성의 원리를 활용할 수 있지만 사회성 결함으로 인하여, 낱말 연결에서 상대방이 제공하는 강화를 적절하게 수용하지 못할 가능성이 있다. 본 연구는 자폐성장애 아동과 지적장애를 동반한 자폐성장애 아동, 그리고 지적장애 아동의 세 그룹 간 표현 및 수용어휘 능력의 차이를 알아보고, 각 그룹에서 보이는 표현 및 수용언어 능력의 차이가 그룹 간에도 유의한 차이를 보이는지를 밝히고자 한다. 방법: 연구에는 10명의 고기능 자폐성 아동과 11명의 지적장애를 동반한 자폐성 아동, 그리고 12명의 지적장애 아동이 참여하였고, 이들의 수용 및 표현어휘 검사를 실시하였다. 결과: 수용 및 표현어휘 점수는 세 그룹 간 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 하지만 각 그룹 내에서 표현 및 수용어휘의 격차는 통계적으로 유의미하지는 않았지만, 자폐성 아동에게 보이는 표현어휘 우세 양상이 고기능 자폐성 아동 집단과 지적장애를 동반한 자폐성 아동 집단에서 일정하게 나타나는 경향을 보였다. 결과에 대한 논의 및 연구의 제한점, 그리고 후속 연구에서 고려할 사항에 대하여 제시하였다. 논의 및 결론: 세 집단의 어휘 능력 간 보이는 경향성은 지적장애 그룹의 상호배타성 원리 사용 가능성을 보여준다. 후속 연구에서는 대상자 수를 늘리고 어휘능력 평가 도구를 보완하는 것이 필요하겠다. Objectives: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) shows atypicality in various domains in language. One of atypical characteristics in their language can be found in vocabulary. Usually children show greater receptive than expressive vocabularies, but for ASD children the opposite results are reported. Even though children with autism show mutual exclusivity when mapping new words to the correct objects, their social deficits prohibit them from being reinforced by others' feedback. Thus they can have more difficulty in receiving initiation and directions from others, and as a result, can demonstrate atypical vocabulary characteristics. The purpose of this study is to find out the differences in expressive and receptive vocabulary abilities among children with high functioning ASD, low functioning ASD, and intellectual disabilities (ID), and the discrepancies in expressive and receptive vocabulary among the three groups. Methods: Ten high functioning ASD, 11 low functioning ASD, and 12 ID children were tested with the receptive and expressive vocabularies test (REVT). Results: The results indicate significant differences in receptive and expressive vocabularies. However, there was no significance between receptive and expressive vocabulary among three groups even though trends of higher expressive vocabularies over receptive can be found in the high and low functioning ASD group. Conclusion: The trends of higher expressive vocabulary in the two ASD groups compare to ID group tells high possibilities that children with ID can be reinforced by the feedback that the interaction partner gives. For the future studies, it is necessary to increase the sample size and add assessment tools which can prove vocabulary abilities.
