Comparison between Different Types of Outlining Activities Using Nearpod for Reading Comprehension

While outlining activities have been extensively utilized and proven effective in writing classes, there is a significant lack of research on various types of outlining activities in university-level reading classes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the effects of student-generated or instructor-provided outlining activities using Nearpod on college students’ reading comprehension and affective aspects in reading classes. Two existing classes totaling 86 college students were selected and allocated into an instructor-provided outlining group (N = 43) and student-generated outlining group (N = 43). The former group received reading instructions using instructor-provided outlining, whilst students in the student-generated outlining group created outlining by themselves. Outlining activity sheets were provided on Nearpod during the reading stage. Midterm and final reading comprehension tests were then administered to compare the effects of different types of outlining activities on Nearpod, and a questionnaire was used to gather students’ opinions on the use of different outlining activities and on their experiences of utilizing Nearpod. As a result, this study found no statistically significant mean difference between the two groups regardless of proficiency levels. In addition, the majority of students expressed that outlining activities had helped them to understand their texts’ structures and main ideas. Most students were satisfied with using Nearpod to complete outlining sheets, especially for peer review and receiving instant feedback from the instructor. The study further suggests the potential for improving reading abilities by engaging learners with suitable outlining activities during English reading classes.

본 연구는 보험회사의 ESG경영이 경제적 가치와 사회적 가치에 미치는 영향을 살펴보기 위하 여, 생명보험회사의 2016년부터 2021년도 ESG성과 자료와 재무지표 및 비재무지표를 활용하 였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보험회사의 ESG경영은 기업의 규모에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 규모가 큰 기업의 경우, 사회공헌활동과 환경활동이 많으며, 지배구조가 비 교적 건전한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 사회공헌활동은 경제적 가치에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것 으로 나타났다. 보험회사의 사회공헌활동은 총자산에서 많은 부분을 차지하지 않으며, 환경관 련 활동 또한 미비한 것으로 나타났다. 이에 경제적 성과에는 큰 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 판단된다. 셋째, 지배구조가 건전할수록 경제적 가치와 사회적 가치가 증대되는 것으로 나타 났다. 지배구조의 건전성은 영업이율에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고, 계약자들에게 신뢰를 주어 보험계약 유지율이 높아지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여, 보험회사의 ESG경영이 경 제적 가치의 제고와 사회적 신뢰에 영향을 줄 수 있음을 살펴보았으며, 향후 ESG경영의 중요 성이 대두되고 있는 시점에서 보험회사의 ESG경영의 필요성과 방향에 대해 제시하였다는 점 에서 의의를 지니고 있다. Purpose : This study attempted to examine the factors influencing economic and social values of ESG management of insurance companies. Research design, data, methodology : For the study, ESG activity information, financial information and non-financial information of 24 life insurance companies from 2016 to 2021 were used. Results : First, it was found that the ESG activities of insurance companies vary depending on the size of the company. Second, social contribution activities were found to have a negative (-) effect on the economic value of insurance companies. Third, it was found that the soundness of the governance structure of insurance companies increases social value and economic value. Conclusions : It was examined that ESG management of insurance companies can improve economic value and affect social trust. It has implications in that it presented the necessity and direction of ESG management of insurance companies at a time when the importance of ESG management is emerging in the future..
Levofloxacin-Induced Achilles Tendinitis in a Young Adult in the Absence of Predisposing Conditions

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) represent a major class of antimicrobials that have a high potential as therapeutic agents. Although FQs are generally safe for the use as antimicrobials, they may induce tendinopathic complications such as tendinitis and tendon rupture. A number of factors have been suggested to further predispose a patient to such injuries. Hitherto, a few published cases on tendon disorders have implicated levofloxacin, a more recently introduced FQ. Here, we report a patient with levofloxacin-induced Achilles tendinitis, who exhibited no known predisposing factors. A 20-year-old man without any history of disease or medication presented with community-acquired pneumonia. Levofloxacin was administered and 3 days later, he complained of pain in the left Achilles tendon and revealed redness and swelling in the area. On suspecting Achilles tendinitis, levofloxacin treatment was discontinued, and the tendinitis subsequently improved. To our knowledge, this is the first case report on FQ-induced Achilles tendinitis in Korea.
A Case of Scrub Typhus complicated with a Splenic Infarction

We present a patient with scrub typhus complicated with a splenic infarction. A 40-year-old man visited the emergency medical center complaining of fever for the previous week. He had no past medical history, but reported engaging in outdoor activities. Examination revealed a maculopapular rash on his trunk and an eschar on his epigastrium. Abdominal computed tomography was performed to examine the cause of the tenderness on the left upper quadrant of his abdomen, which revealed a splenic infarct. The patient was diagnosed with scrub typhus based on the results of blood polymerase chain reaction testing, and genetic sequencing confirmed the presence of Orientia tsutsugamushi Boryong. His symptoms improved following doxycycline treatment.
Engineering of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius for Hemicellulosic Biomass Utilization

The saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose is essential for utilizing lignocellulosic biomass as a biofuel. While cellulose is composed of glucose only, hemicelluloses are composed of diverse sugars such as xylose, arabinose, glucose, and galactose. Sulfolobus acidocaldarius is a good potential candidate for biofuel production using hemicellulose as this archaeon simultaneously utilizes various sugars. However, S. acidocaldarius has to be manipulated because the enzyme that breaks down hemicellulose is not present in this species. Here, we engineered S. acidocaldarius to utilize xylan as a carbon source by introducing xylanase and β-xylosidase. Heterologous expression of β-xylosidase enhanced the organism’s degradability and utilization of xylooligosaccharides (XOS), but the mutant still failed to grow when xylan was provided as a carbon source. S. acidocaldarius exhibited the ability to degrade xylan into XOS when xylanase was introduced, but no further degradation proceeded after this sole reaction. Following cell growth and enzyme reaction, S. acidocaldarius successfully utilized xylan in the synergy between xylanase and β-xylosidase.

This study aims to investigate the photoprotective properties of a Lomentaria hakodatensis ethanol extract (LHE) against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiationinduced cellular damage in human HaCaT keratinocytes. LHE exhibited scavenging activity against intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), which were generated by either hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or UVB radiation. Moreover, LHE scavenged superoxide anion generated by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system and hydroxyl radical generated by the Fenton reaction (FeSO4 + H2O2). Furthermore, LHE exhibited UVB absorptive properties and attenuated injury to cellular components (e.g., lipids,proteins and DNA), resulting from UVB-induced oxidative stress. In addition, LHE reduced apoptosis in response to UVB, as shown by decreased DNA fragmentation and the formation of apoptotic bodies. These results suggest that LHE protects human keratinocytes against UVB-induced oxidative stress by scavenging ROS and absorbing UVB rays; thereby reducing damage to biological components.

We investigated the role of Ni/Cu metallization and the characteristics of selective thin-film depositionon the Indium tin oxide (ITO), ZnO, SiNx and doped Si surfaces of a silicon solarcellelectrode. We propose Ni/Cu metallization as an alternative to silver screen-printing. Our method,called the selective electrode formation (SEF) process, utilizes a low-cost, streamlined wet chemicalprocess. Metallization was confirmed to occur on the Si electrode with adhesion through Pd activation. Ni, which hinders Cu diffusion, was then selectively deposited from a NaH2PO2 based nickelsolution, and Cu, the main electrode material, was deposited from a HCHObased copper solution. Ni/Cu was deposited on the ZnO, ITO, or SiNx film. The deposition and the heat treatment of Niand Cu were successfully performed on a substrate consisting of a patterned n+-doped wafer withPOCl3 by maintaining the same steady process conditions as in process.
