Evaluation of impact of climate variability on water resources and yield capacity of selected reservoirs in the north central Nigeria

Adebayo Wahab Salami,Habibat Ibrahim,Adebayo Olatunbosun Sojobi 대한환경공학회 2015 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.20 No.3

This paper presents the evaluation of the impact of climate change on water resources and yield capacity of Asa and Kampe reservoirs. Trend analysis of mean temperature, runoff, rainfall and evapotranspiration was carried out using Mann Kendall and Sen’s slope, while runoff was modeled as a function of temperature, rainfall and evapotranspiration using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Rainfall and runoff exhibited positive trends at the two dam sites and their upstream while forecasted ten-year runoff displayed increasing positive trend which indicates high reservoir inflow. The reservoir yield capacity estimated with the ANN forecasted runoff was higher by about 38% and 17% compared to that obtained with historical runoff at Asa and Kampe respectively. This is an indication that there is tendency for water resources of the reservoir to increase and thus more water will be available for water supply and irrigation to ensure food security.

EFFECTS OF POLYPHENOLS OF Cocos Nucifera HUSK FIBRE ON SELECTED KIDNEY FUNCTION INDICES IN MICE

        Adebayo, Joseph Oluwatope,Owolabi, O.O.,Adewumi, O.S.,Balogun, E.A.,Malomo, S.O. Cellmed Orthocellular Medicine and Pharmaceutical 2019 셀메드 (CellMed) Vol.9 No.1

Decoction of Cocos nucifera husk fibre is used indigenously in Nigeria for malaria treatment. Polyphenols have been identified as the phytochemicals responsible for the antimalarial activity of Cocos nucifera husk fibre, though their toxicity has not been evaluated. The polyphenols of Cocos nucifera husk fibre were therefore evaluated for their effects on selected kidney function indices in mice. Fifty mice were randomly divided into five groups (A-E) of ten mice each. Mice in group A were orally administered 5% DMSO solution while those in groups B, C, D and E were orally administered 31.25, 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/Kg body weight of the polyphenols respectively for seven days. Serum urea, creatinine and uric acid concentrations were determined. Serum levels of sodium, potassium, chloride and calcium ions and kidney alkaline phosphatase (ALP), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activities were also determined. The results showed that the polyphenols significantly reduced (p<0.05) urea concentration at 250 mg/Kg body weight and creatinine concentration at all doses compared to controls. The polyphenols caused no significant alteration (p>0.05) in serum uric acid concentration and kidney ALP, GGT and GDH activities compared to controls. There was significant increase (p<0.05) in serum sodium ion concentration at 31.25, 125 and 250 mg/Kg body weight of polyphenols whereas significant increase (p<0.05) in serum potassium and chloride ions was observed at 62.5 and 250 mg/Kg body weight compared to controls. Thus, polyphenols of Cocos nucifera husk fibre may adversely affect some osmoregulatory functions of the kidney, especially at higher concentrations.

Acute toxicity and antimalarial studies of extract of  Allophylus spicatus in animals

        Adebayo Abiodun H.,Ishola Temitope A.,Yakubu Omolara F. 한국독성학회 2021 Toxicological Research Vol.37 No.3

Medicinal plants produce a variety of chemical substances with varied physiological effects. They are a huge reservoir of various chemical substances with potential therapeutic properties. Allophylus spicatus is a shrub that belong to the Sapindaceae family. In this study, male albino wistar rats (18) were used for acute toxicity test. Animals were divided into six groups of three rats each. Group A served as the control group while the other groups were dosed orally with 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 mg/kg body weight of extract and were observed for 14 days. Swiss albino mice (42) were used for the antimalarial study; five groups of six infected mice per group (Groups C–G) were respectively dosed orally with 25 mg chloroquine/ kg bw, 200 mg of extract/kg bw, 400 mg/kg bw of extract, 25 mg chl./kg bw + 200 mg/kg bw of extract and 25 mg chl./kg bw + 400 mg/kg bw extract with three groups serving as the control (Groups A–C) for three days. Acute toxicity test and histology analysis on the liver tissue confirmed the safety of the extract at concentrations less than 1000 mg/kg b/w. Antimalarial studies showed the highest activity in the group administered with 400 mg/kg + 25 mg chl./kg b/w. In conclusion, A. spicatus was non-toxic at doses less than 1000 mg/kg and significantly reduced parasitemia count in P. berghei infected mice, thus validating its folkloric usage.

Yoruba African Women and Patriarchal Excesses in the Context of Globalization and Sustainable Development Goals

Adebayo, Abidemi Olufemi 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2021 Asian Women Vol.37 No.3

This paper investigates how cultural practices as they relate to men’s treatment of women in the Yoruba culture align with or contradict globalization ideals and the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), given that globalization and the SDGs are conceived as yardsticks for global development in the twenty-first century. Globalization and the SDGs are two contemporary phenomena with universal applicability and impact because they impart African culture, particularly gender, patriarchy, and femininity as cultural signifiers. This paper is anchored on Molara Ogundipe-Leslie’s gender theory of Stiwanism which advocates women’s social inclusion, and George Herbert Mead’s Interactionism which centers on inclusivity. Nigeria is yet to implement the SDGs goals due to insecurity and, this paper argues, cultural variance. The existing Yoruba customs seen in native assumptions, aboriginal wisdom or knowledge systems, and superstitions, as well as social practices regarding women, threaten gender unification as conceived of in SDG 5. The Yoruba cultural belief that women cannot be family icons threatens SDG 10. The new practice of Yoruba men using women for money-making rituals is an objectification of women, contradicting gender best practices as enshrined in Goal 5. The continued practice of levirate marriage among the Yoruba because the widow cannot inherit a late husband’s property, arising from the economic disempowerment of the women concerned, undermines SDG 8, relating to decent work and economic growth. Existing Yoruba attitudes toward women are therefore inimical to global best practices in relation to women and the successful implementation of the SDGs in Southwest Nigeria by 2030. This calls for further investigation into the cultures of Nigeria’s other regions to assess the feasibility of the SDGs initiative in these parts of the country.

A Qualitative Analysis of the Pathway Pest Risks Associated with Export of Pineapple, Ananas comosus from the Southwest Nigeria to the USA.

Adebayo Omoloye A.,Victor Adegoke O. Korean Society of Applied Entomology 2006 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.9 No.2

This study investigated the diversity and risk status of the pests associated with pineapple fruit trade from Nigeria to the U.S.A. in a commodity-initiated Qualitative Pest Risk Assessment as required under the Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement of member nations of the World Trade Organization. The study validated in the field as necessary, all fruit pests of pineapple, Ananas comosus in the southwest Nigeria that have potential to follow the risk pathway from the farm to the port of exit. Twenty four pests, comprising 18 species of insects, 5 fungi and 1 bacterium were identified. Among these, one insect - Zonocerus variegatus was identified as a quarantine pest of pineapple with potential to follow the pathway to the pest risk areas in the U.S.A. The likelihood of introduction based on climatic conditions matching the pest etiology and host biotics is medium. The climatic requirement of the pest is compared with those of the pest risk areas in the USA such as Georgia, Texas, Florida, California, and Alabama. The pest lays its eggs usually in soil but could be hidden in the leaf bract or scale on the pineapple fruit surface. The egg undergoes 6-9 months of diapause, depending on the environment. The infestive nymphs and adults are relatively large sized. The overall consequence of introduction is high but the risk of this pest following the pathway is rated medium. The mitigation in place in Nigeria such as pre-shipment inspection, cleaning and fumigation at the port of exit appears adequate but could still be improved to completely remove the likelihood of introduction. Gamma-irradiation which is likely to become available in Nigeria has the potential to remove totally the risk of introduction of this pest to the USA.

Alkaloids in food: a review of toxicity, analytical methods, occurrence and risk assessments

        Adebayo J. Akinboye,김기윤,최세윤,양인호,이준구 한국식품과학회 2023 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.32 No.9

Alkaloids have been utilized by humans for years. They have diverse applications in pharmaceuticals. They have been proven to be effective in treating a number of diseases. They also form an important part of regular human diets, as they are present in food items, food supplements, diet ingredients and food contaminants. Despite their obvious importance, these alkaloids are toxic to humans. Their toxicity is dependent on a range of factors, such as specific dosage, exposure time and individual properties. Mild toxic effects include nausea, itching and vomiting while chronic effects include paralysis, teratogenicity and death. This review summarizes the published studies on the toxicity, analytical methods, occurrence and risk assessments of six major alkaloid groups that are present in food, namely, ergot, glycoalkaloids, purine, pyrrolizidine, quinolizidine and tropane alkaloids.

Development of Knowledge Graph Based on Risk Register to Support Risk Management of Construction Projects

Muritala Adebayo Isah,김병수 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.7

Risk management (RM) in construction projects is a knowledge-intensive process that requiresan efficient mechanism for capturing, storing, exploiting, and managing risk-related knowledge. Although some existing studies have proposed various knowledge-based risk management(KBRM) tools. However, not all tools suit all projects, as every project is unique. Besides, eachtool is developed based on certain assumptions with methodological drawbacks. Hence, newtools are required in response to the continuous change in the project environment, complexity, and dynamism by adopting new technologies to improve the RM processes. Thisstudy proposes a knowledge graph technique to improve risk-related knowledge storage, sharing, and reuse in managing construction project risks. This study constructed a riskknowledge graph (RisKG) based on a project risk register. The proposed RisKG was then usedto develop a construction risk dashboard (ConRisk Dashboard) that can be used for quick riskinformation retrieval to support the RM of construction projects. The effectiveness of theproposed ConRisk Dashboard was verified through its use for the search and retrieval of riskassessment details of a particular risk source associated with the case project used in RisKG. The results indicate that the ConRisk Dashboard can improve the RM processes by saving timespent on project documentation reviews and cost expended on expert workshops at thebeginning of every new project. Conclusively, the contribution of this study to the body ofknowledge is that it provides a framework for developing knowledge-based risk managementsystems (KBRMS) and intelligent tools that can facilitate integrated risk management and digitalcollaboration among project stakeholders to support informed decision-making in constructionprojects. In addition, this work paves the way for research towards developing and adoptingdigital tools that can facilitate the digital transformation of RM and CM practices to improveproject performance and productivity in the construction industry.
