LHR(Landfill Site Hazard Ranking Model)was developed for assessing the relative hazard of landfill sites by using the method of value-structured approach. LHR consists of combining a multiattribute decision-making method with a qualitative risk assessment approach. AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process)based on the pairwise comparison method was applied to determine weights of landfill site factors related. To determine the relative hazard of landfill sites evaluated, hydrogeological factors, waste characteristics factors and recptors factors were evaluated by LHR. LHR can help decision-makers prioritization of remediation of landfill sites through the relatively convenient and concise evaluation metl10d of landfill site features related. LHR focuses mainly on pathways of groundwater and surfacewater for evaluating landfill hazard to receptors including humans. To validiate the applicability of LHR, Nanjido Landfill site, Metropolitan Landfill site, and Hwasung Landfill site were evalulated. LHR scores of the above-mentioned landfills were 55, 19, and 7 respectively.

This study is to develop a new synthetic method for the nitroarenes vis non-electrophilic substitution. Direct nitration at the C-1 position of isoquinoline has never been reported and substitution in isoquionoline under the normal nitration condition occurs at C-5 and C-8. We have demonstrated a facile one-step sythetic method for the nitration of isoqunolines at the C-1 position, which involves the electrophilic attack of a DMSO-Ac₂O complex, followed by nucleophilic addition of nitrate ion the this intermeddiate. Since the reaction is simple and mild, this method has preparative merit since 1-nitroisoqunolines are nto readily accessible by other methods. Application to the synthesis of poly nitroarenes from the corresponding anilines was also described.

Individual identification is an important part in medicolegal field especially in mass disaster. At July, 27, 1989, KAL KE-803 was crashed on landing at Tripoli International Airport, Liba. The plane was caught in fire and sixty eight Koreans were sacrified. The majority of victims were severely charred and injured. The authors examed all dead bodies and successfully identified all the cases through visual, anthropological, odontological, radiological and pathological methods including fingerprint and blood typing.
Role of Nitric Oxide in Pepsinogen Secretion from Rat Gastric Chief Cells

Nitric oxide (NO), a cellular messenger synthesized from L-arginine by NO synthase (NOS, EC.1.14.13.39), is considered to be a regulator of gastric secretion. In the present study, the role of NO in the regulation of exocrine secretion was investigated in rat gastric chief cells. Treatment of chief cells with carbachol resulted in an increase in the arginine conversion to citrulline, the amount of NOx, the release of pepsinogen, and the level of cGMP Especially, carbachol-stimulated increase of arginine to citrulline transformation, the amount of NOx, cGMP level and the release of pepsinogen were partially reduced by the natural NOS inhibitor, N^G-monomethyl-L-arginine (MMA) and N^G N^G-dimethyl-L-arginine (DMA). Furthermore, MMA- and DMA-induced decrease of pepsinogen secretion showed dose-dependent pattern. Activation of NOS is one of the early events in receptor-mediated cascade of reactions in gastric chief cells and NO, not completely, but partially mediates gastric secretion. Agonist-stimulated pepsinogen secretion in chief cells has been considered to be mediated in adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate pathway and/or guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) pathway. Taken together, the above results suggest that partial decrease of exocrine secretion following treatment of NOS inhibitor may result from the inactivation of NOS and subsequent guanylate cyclase, and NO/cGMP pathway may play a pivotal role in exocrine secretion.

A study was carried out to determine the content of Mn and Cr in the ground water in Seoul area, where municipal water supply system was not installed, from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 1973. 1n this study, authors examined the hardness, pH, water temperature and CI ion to investigate the general conditions of the ground water. For this study, samples were collected from 46 wells which were located in outpart of Seoul city, and Mn and Cr were determined with the Spectronic-20. The following results were obtained: 1) Average value of the ground water conditions of the wells were 13.30C in temperature, pH-6.3, hardness 159 ppm and CI ion 41 ppm. 2) 1n the manganese concentration, the highest area was Yeongdeungpo-Ku(O. 318 ppm), while the lowest area was Sungbuk-KuCO. 065 ppm) and the rnean concentration of the whole district was O. 196 pprn. 3) 1n the chrome concentration, the highest area was Yeongdeungpo-KuCO. 031 pprn), while the lowest area was Dobong-Ku (trace) and the rnean concentration of the whole district was 0.012 pprn.

A study was carried out to detect of illegal artificial dyes, and to confirm the used rate of illegal dyes in the production process of commercial drops (candy), from Dec. 10, 1972 to Feb. 10, 1973. 1n this study, it was used thin layer chromatography, the samples were divided into two groups, .group A of inscribed trade name and group B of not inscribed trade name. To contrast with group A and group B, 100 samples were randomly collected in the market places, 50 sampl~s from group A and 50 samples from group B. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) used rate of ilIegal dyes were 2% of group A and 9% of group B. 2) used rate of illegal dyes were 2 % of red, 2% of yellow, 1% of violet and 6% of green, not in blue. 3) used rate of iIIegal dyes 3% of Rhodamine B, 3% of Auramine and 6% of Light green S.F. Yellowish. 4) Out of 20 cases those used mixed dyes, only one case was confirmed as two iIIegal dyes, and 4 cases were used one i1Iegal dye.

Arginine decarboxylase (ADC) is the first enzyme in one of the two pathways of diamine putrescine biosynthesis in plants. The genes encoding ADC have previously been cloned from Escherichia coli, oat and tomato genome. Two degenerate oligonucleotides (17-mer) corresponding to two conserved regions of ADC were used as primers in polymerase chain reaction of rice (Oryza sativa L.) genomic DNA, and an approximately 1.0 kbp fragment was obtained. This amplified PCR product showed an open reading frame which contains 1,022 by of nucleotide sequences. This PCR product was cloned into pGEM-originated T vector anti the short 500 by Pst1 digested fragment was subcloned into pGEM-3zf(+/-) vectors to facilitate sequencing. The nucleotide sequence of this PCR product showed about 74% and 70% identity with the same regions of the oat and tomato ADC cDNA sequences, respectively. The predicted .amino acid sequence exhibited 45% and 62% identity with oat and tomato ADC polypeptide fragments, respectively. The sequence similarities of 34%, 47%n and 38% were previously reported in oat and E. coli, tomato ;md oat, and tomato and E. coli ADC amino acids, respectively. Therefore, similarities and identities between rice and oat or tomato are remarkably higher than those others of the previous reports. In the highly conserved regions in both the amino acid sequence and spacing regions among the sequences of these three, rice ADC open reading frame also has the exactly same regions with the striking similarity. RNA blot analysis showed that ADC is expressed as a transcript of approximately 2.5 kbp in the rice seedling leaf tissues.
Inhibitory Effect of Natural Killer Cells on Liver Tumor Growth in Mouse Xenograft Model

Human natural killer (NK) cells are major players in innate immune response. The functions of these cells as a scavenger of cancer cells are enhanced by cytokines such as interleukin-2 (IL-2), which play an important role in immune response in both tumors and virally infected cells. Liver cancer has a high incidence rate and is a major cause of death in Korea. We provide evidence that human NK cells inhibit tumor growth of the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line SNU-354. NK cells were cultured with human IL-2 for 14 days, yielding an enriched NK cell population containing 35% CD8+cells, 6% CD4+cells, and 51% CD16+/CD56+ cells. Intravenous injection of NK cells at doses from 2.5 to 10 million cells/mouse was administered once per week in a nude mouse model that retains human liver tumor induced by implantation of SNU-354 cells. The results showed that human NK cells were recruited within tumor tissue and inhibited SNU-354 tumor growth by 32%, 58%, and 65%. The current data suggest the potential for use of NK cellbased immunotherapy for treatment of human liver cancer.
