The purpose of this study was to understand the nature of participating crane dance program through the experience of the elderly participants in ‘Crane Dance Program’ by using phenomenological approach. 8 elderly, aged over 65 years old, participated in this study. Giorgi’s phenomenological approach was used and data were collected by in-depth interview over 3times for each informant. The results were as follows. first, the participants recognize their aging such as enervating, weakening sensory functions, failing memory before participating crane dance program. second, through the participating program, they have experienced lots of achievements in terms of physically, psychologically, and socially, but at the same time, they felt doubt about its continuity for participation because of their limitations and negative external factors. Finally, the component was ‘changed their life through the crane dance program, which related with future plan and hope by participating long period of time. The results of this study might provide better understanding about crane dance program.

This study was carried out to investigate the distribution of disqualified boars tested on performance at the Second Korea Swine Testing Station from 2007 to 2009. Data used in this study were 6,758 records of Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire breeding stocks which were registered in the herd book of the Korea Animal Improvement Association. Duroc breeding stocks tested performance were vastly outnumbered by Landrace and Yorkshire breeding stocks tested on performance. In disqualifying boars tested on performance, the Yorkshire was the most breeding stock. In the disqualifying factor in 2007, the shortage of index was the most factor. And the most of the disqualifying factors in 2008 and 2009 was the excess of daily age as reaching with 90㎏body weight.

This study investigated changes in certain blood parameters in calves and pigs after foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination. In this study, five calves and five pigs were selected from groups of 10 calves and pigs, respectively, and were vaccinated with an FMD vaccine. The remaining animals formed two non-treatment control groups. Blood samples were collected from all animals on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th days post-vaccination. In the FMD-vaccinated calves and pigs on day 7 post-vaccination, white blood cell counts, blood urea nitrogen levels, and alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were higher than those in the respective controls. The present data suggested that the certain hemato-biochemical parameters on cattle and pigs were meaningfully changed between before and after FMD vaccination.

Angular deformities of the distal femur occur in congenital diseases or due to acquired causes, such as malunion after a fracture of the distal femur. Angular deformities of the lower extremities affect the mechanical axis, causing changes in the weight pressure on the articular surface. As a result, angular deformities quicken the progression of osteoarthritis. Therefore, correction of deformities should be performed to prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Distal femoral osteotomy is one of the methods to correct angular deformities in unicompartmental osteoarthritis. However, femoral supracondylar dome osteotomy with retrograde intramedullary nailing in the distal femur with a varus deformity has been rarely reported. Herein, we describe a technique for femoral supracondylar dome osteotomy with retrograde intramedullary nailing in a varus deformity after a pathologic fracture of giant cell tumor in the distal femur with a review of the relevant literature.

This study investigated the effects of LactoPlanta® (Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), 2.0 × 109 colony forming units (CFU)/kg) on reduction of noxious gas emission in pig houses as well as improvement of carcass weight and quality in finishing pigs. A total of 850 finishing pigs were assigned to four treatment groups: control (CON, basal diet) (n=190), LP-0.1, 0.1% LactoPlanta® (n=210), LP-0.2, 0.2% LactoPlanta® (n=230), and LP-0.4, 0.4% LactoPlanta® (n=220). Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were significantly reduced in all treatment groups compared to CON. Mercaptan contents and carcass weights of LP-0.2 and LP-0.4 were significantly decreased compared to CON, whereas there were no significant differences between LP-0.1 and CON. Carcass weight of LP-0.1 was slightly higher than that of CON, but there was no significant difference. However, carcass weights of LP-0.2 and LP-0.4 were significantly higher than that of CON (P<0.05). The prevalence of grade A carcasses in groups administered with L. plantarum (46.7~63.3%) was higher than that in CON (43.3%) and increased in a dose-dependent manner. Based on the results of this study, L. plantarum could be an effective candidate to reduce noxious gas emissions in finishing pig houses as well as improve carcass weight and quality in finishing pigs.

Autoantibodies, which are generated by immune system recognizing the presence of the abnormal tumor-associated antigens, are promising biomarkers for the early detection of tumors. Recently, we established hundreds of B cell hybridomas from H-ras12V transgenic mouse, a typical tumor model system, as a source of tumor-associated autoantibodies without using any extracellular antigens and have characterized specific target antigens against them. TAB-K94 monoclonal antibody, one of tumor-associated autoantibodies obtained from H-ras12V transgenic mouse, was investigated in this study and its target antigen was identified as cytokeratin 8/18 (CK8/18) complex, an intermediate filament (IF) protein complex of epithelial cells which is involved in cell motility and cancer progression. To establish a method for the detection of autoantibodies against CK8/18 complex in tumor patients sera, a specific mimotope against TAB-K94 autoantibody was screened from the cyclic random hepta-peptide phage library and, by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using it as a binder of anti-CK8/18 autoantibodies, we could distinguish breast cancer patients vs. normal subjects with 50.00 % sensitivity and 82.61 % specificity. These results imply that anti-CK8/18 autoantibody is induced in a certain group of breast cancer patients and detection of anti-CK8/18 autoantibody would be useful for the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Formation of conidium, an asexual organ on the hyphae, was examined from ten species of Pleurotus. Conidiospores of them were distinguished into two types of spores; an elliptical and a globose spores. Dikaryotic hyphae of ten species and monokaryotic hyphae of three species were observed to produce conidiospore. Conidia were observed on the hyphae grown on mushroom complete agar medium but were not on mushroom minimal agar medium. Two aconidial mutants were obtained by the ultraviolet irradiation.

Autoantibodies, which are generated by immune system recognizing the presence of the abnormal tumor-associated antigens, are promising biomarkers for the early detection of tumors. Recently, we established a B cell hybridoma pool derived from HBx transgenic mouse, as a source of tumor-associated autoantibodies without using any extracellular antigens, and have characterized the specific target antigens against them. XC154 autoantibody, one of them, has been investigated in this study and its target antigen was identified by mass spectrometric analysis as aminoimidazole carboxamide ribonucleotide transformylase / inosine monophosphate cyclohydrolase (ATIC) that catalyzes the last two steps of de novo purine biosynthesis. A specific mimotope against XC154 autoantibody was screened from the cyclic random hepta-peptide phage library and, using mimotope display M13 phage as a coating antigen for ELISA, we could distinguish patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) vs. normal subjects with 86.96% sensitivity and 88.24% specificity. These results imply that anti-ATIC autoantibody is induced in patients with HCC and detection of anti-ATIC autoantibody can be used for the diagnosis of HCC. Now, several attempts have been performed to establish a more reliable and convenient assay to detect tumor-assocoated autoantibodies using recombinant proteins displaying cycling peptide instead of mimotope display M13 phage and the usefulness of improved assay will be discussed.
