In the city of Ulsan, South Korea, Food-Waste Leachate (FWL) is let off into the ocean, which eventually poses a severe threat to the marine environment. Preliminary results suggest that this leachate, when subjected to an optimized fermentation process can generate ethanol. A 2^3-factorial design was employed, and the effects of temperature (30-40oC), pH (4-6), and reducing sugar concentration (RSC, 45-75 g L^(−1)) on ethanol yield was investigated through controlled batch experiments using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (KCTC-7904), a species of budding yeast. A maximum yield of 0.31 g ethanol g^(−1) RSC corresponding to an ethanol concentration of 23.56 g L^(−1) was achieved under the following test conditions: temperature - 40oC, pH - 4.0, and RSC - 75 g L^(−1). Among the different parameters studied, both temperature and RSC had a strong synergistic effect on ethanol yield, while the effects due to changes in pH values were minimal. Anew, under the test conditions, the 2-way interaction effect between temperature × pH and the 3-way interaction between temperature × pH × RSC were negative, while all other interactions, were positive and also found to be statistically significant at 5% probability (p value < 0.05). The results were represented by a suitable model equation, which could be easily applied for scale-up to produce value-added ethanol, by sterilizing FWL prior to fermentation. The practical implications of this research have been stated.

Although the conventional total knee arthoplasty (TKA) planning used 2D or 3D images of the patient's lower extremity to determine bone alignment, it was shown that good bone alignment does not always guarantee successful results due to unbalanced joint contact forces and soft tissue tension. Thus, the joint contact force balance and soft tissue tension were pre-operatively calculated using finite element analysis (FEA). Although the results of FEA are accurate, the rigid body spring method (RBSM) has introduced for the joint contact force or pressure distribution due to the high costs for FEA. In this paper, an innovative method was described to quantify the pre- and post-operative knee contact force balance using various engineering techniques, including the free-form deformation (FFD) technique, and RBSM-based cartilage contact force and ligament tension estimation algorithm. Nine cases of TKA planning were performed with three different surgical options, including over-correction of the valgus ratio of the femur, tibial plateau cutting length, and MCL release to redistribute the medial and lateral contact force balance. This method is useful as a patient-specific preoperative planning tool in TKA surgery.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months. Venous Doppler ultrasound detected a thrombus in the right femoral vein, while an abdominal CT scan revealed a mass lesion suggestive of a lower bile duct tumor. Esophageogastroduodenoscopy showed a friable duodenal cap mucosa with multiple ulcers and edematous mucosa of the second part of the duodenum that caused a partial lumen obstruction. The final histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic duodenitis with larvae consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis. The patient was treated with Ivermectin for two weeks and anticoagulation therapy for three months. After treatment and a six-month follow-up, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms and leg swelling resolved completely. This is the first documented case of a patient in Vietnam with strongyloidiasis who presented with venous thromboembolism and duodenal obstruction.

In this study, we consider the transportation problem in port container terminals. It aims to determine positions in yards to place the containers at the adequate times. The containers on ship must be unloaded one by one from top to bottom, and placed in the main yard in order to reduce additional cost required for unnecessary unloading when getting out by customer with given timetable. The cost for transportation at container terminals could be reduced by a new approach in scheduling: move the containers from ship and stack them onto main yard that minimizes cost of yard crane operation when unloading for customer.
