We examined the effects of dietary nutrient content, feeding period, and feed allowance on compensatory growth, food use, chemical composition, and serum chemistry of juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. We placed 720 juvenile fish into 24 400-L flow-through round tanks (30 fish per tank). A 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design (diet: control (C) and high protein and lipid (HPL) × feeding period: 8 and 6 weeks × feed allowance: 100% and 90% of satiation) was applied. Fish were hand-fed twice daily, based on the designated feeding schedule. Weight gain and food consumption were affected by both the feeding period and feed allowance, but not by diet. The food efficiency ratio was not affected by diet, feeding period, or feed allowance, but the protein efficiency ratio and protein retention were affected by diet and feeding period, respectively. We found that the full compensatory growth of fish was not achieved at a restricted feeding allowance.

Background/Aims: Propofol is a short-acting intravenous sedative-hypnotic agent that can be used as a hypnotics for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of propofol as a hypnotic agent for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Methods: From June to October 1998, twenty eight patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were to receive propofol. Vital signs and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) were monitored by pulse oximetry during continuous infusion of propofol. Propofol (1% solution) was initially infused by 26.7 mg/kg/hr until loss of eyelash reflex and then titrated to 6∼10 mg/kg/hr according to the patient's response and vital sign. Propofol infusion was discontinued while the endoscopic fiber was removed. Recovery time was defined from discontinuation of infusion to positive Romberg test. Evaluation was made from the endoscopists' assessment, patients' satisfaction, patients' recall of the procedure, and consciousness of the patients. esults: It was discovered that systolic, diastolic pressure and heart rate were significantly decreased, compared to control group. But clinically significant changes were not found. Apnea did not exist. And the respiration rate was significantly increased during propofol infusion. Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) was transiently decreased during endoscopy. 14 patients (50%) complained of transient dizziness. Pain and redness over the infusion site was not found. The mean total dose of propofol was 133.6 mg. The mean infusion time of propofol was 6.2 minutes. Mean response and recovery time was 3.7±2.1, 20.9± 5.4 minutes. Endoscopists' assessment and patients' comfort for endoscopy were satisfactory. When we asked 28 patients about willingness to undergo the same procedure in the future, 27 patients (96.4%) agreed. Degree of amnesia after examination revealed total amnesia in 27 patients (96.4%), partial amnesia in 1 patients (3.6%), and recall was not. Conclusions: Propofol has beneficial effects as hypnotic for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy without significant alteration in cardiopulmonary parameters. Patients' and endoscopists' assessment is good. This suggest that propofol may be used more frequently as a kind of premedication, especially in the cases of repeated endoscopy.

We examined the effect of substituting squid meal and macroalgae with soybean meal in a commercial diet on the growth and body composition of juvenile abalone Haliotis discus hannai. We randomly distributed 2310 juvenile aba-lone into 33 rectangular plastic containers and fed them five experimental diets in triplicate as follows. The control diet (Con) consisted of 12% squid meal, 8% corn gluten and 20% soybean meal as protein source, wherein 10% α-starch, 20% wheat flour, and 5% dextrin were carbohydrate source. The experimental diets, 50% squid meal (SM50), 50% squid meal and 50% macroalgae (SM50+MA50), and 100% squid meal and 50% macroalgae (SM100+MA50) were substituted with the same respective amounts of soybean meal. The fifth experimental diet consisted of the control diet plus 1% diatom powder (DP). We prepared two domestic (Domestic A and B) and two imported (China and Japan) abalone feeds. Finally, we prepared Undaria and sea tangle. We found that the weight gain of abalone fed the Con, DP, and China and Japan diets was significantly greater than that of abalone fed Undaria and sea tangle. We conclude that the substituting squid meal and macroalgae with soybean meal in abalone feed has limited benefits, but supplementing diets with 1% diatom powder is effective in improving weight gain.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effects on growth and body composition that result from tuna byproduct meal (TBM) substituted for fish meal in the diet of juvenile abalone, <I>Haliotis discus</I>, were determined. One thousand two hundred sixty juvenile abalone were randomly distributed into 18 70‐L plastic rectangular containers. Six experimental diets were prepared in triplicate. The TBM0 diet included 28% fish meal and 13% soybean meal as the protein source. Twenty‐five, 50, 75, and 100% of the fish meal were substituted with TBM. Finally, salted sea tangle was prepared. The essential amino acids, such as isoleucine, lysine, and valine, tended to decrease with the dietary substitution of TBM for fish meal in the experimental diets. The weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) of abalone that were fed the TBM25 diet were higher than those of abalone that were fed the other diets. The crude protein content of the soft body of the abalone linearly decreased with the dietary substitution of TBM for fish meal. In conclusion, as much as 75% of the fish meal in the diet of abalone can be replaced with TBM without retardation in weight gain and SGR of the abalone when 28% fish meal was included.</P>

<P>The Asian hard clam, <I>Meretrix petechialis</I>, is an economically important bivalve, but its catch and population sizes are decreasing rapidly, owing to many factors, including large-scale reclamation of its natural habitat on the western coast of the Korean peninsula. Attempts to restore the resources and production of this species require genetic structure and diversity information. In this study, we developed 15 microsatellite markers from a partial genomic library enriched in GT repeats. Nine of these markers were polymorphic, with an average allele number of six, and six were monomorphic in 95 tested individuals. No linkage disequilibrium was found between any pair of loci (<I>p</I> > 0.05), and deviations from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) test showing excess of heterozygotes was observed in only one of nine loci. In addition, no null alleles or genetic differentiation between two tested populations were detected. A cross-species amplification in 12 species of four families resulted in two <I>M. petechialis</I>-specific loci and three possible universal markers. This information will be useful in the future development of high-quality artificial seedlings and sustainable resource management.</P>

The genus Polydora(Polychaeta, Spionidae) includes many species well known for their activity as borers. They often become harmful invaders by reducing the growth rate and meat yield of, or inducing the mortality of commercially important mollusck, abalone, Haiotis discus hannai. In 2012, the frequency of the Polydora was observed with 5∼99% in live abalone and 5.3∼70.3% in dead abalone shells of abalone sea-caged aquaculture system, Korea. There are many nacreous blister in the ventral margin and inner of the infestated abalone by abalone in response to the Polydora. A worm bored two holes in the shell and come in and out for ingestion the organic matters. They are more than 40 mm in length and had outstanding palps with black bars, disc form pygidium and 4 eyespots. This is the first record for the statue of Polydora infestation of sea-caged cultured abalone, Haliotis discus hannai in Korea.
