Evaluation of Resource-based Provincial Innovation Environment Index System Based on Open Innovation Theory

Vol.16 No.4

A good innovation environment is the prerequisite for each innovation subject in a region to produce high-quality innovation performance. Due to the significant heterogeneity of resources in various regions and provinces in China, an accurate grasp of the characteristics and key influencing factors of the local innovation environment is the basis for improving innovation-driven efficiency. Based on the systematic review of research literature and from the perspective of open innovation theory, this study constructed a provincial innovation environment evaluation system consisting of two dimensions of process and content, three secondary indicators of institutional and cultural environment, infrastructure environment and market environment, and 19 three-level indicators. The empirical analysis of Shanxi Province, a typical resource-dependent province, reveals that the evolution of innovation environment presents a periodical and iterative development law, and is significantly affected by national macro-policy. The change in institutional and cultural environment dimension is the most stable, the change of infrastructure environment dimension is the most significant, and the change of market environment dimension shows time lag.

Performance Effect of the Fits between Industrial Environment, Innovation Capacity and Innovation: Focusing on Innovation-Intensive Korean Firms

2015 Asian Journal of Innovation and Policy Vol.4 No.3

To explain the performance gap between firms in the same industry, this study focuses on innovation. It provides a new framework using the dynamic-capability view based on empirical analysis of domestic businesses. The findings of this study are as follows: First, when the uncertainty and competition intensity in the business environment and the level of innovation have “fit”, it means that when the former goes up, so does the latter. In this regard, when the innovation capability of a firm is high, being “fit” means that the level of innovation is also high. When there was fitting innovation on industrial environment and innovation capacity, companies were able to achieve relatively high performance. Also, it was confirmed that instead of innovation for innovation capacity, innovation for industrial environment led to relatively higher performances of firms.

Vol.29 No.4

In this study, we empirically analyze the effect of environmental technology innovation on firms' employment. Using the data on manufacturing sector from the 2016 and the 2018 Korea Innovation Survey, we analyze whether employment growth is different for firms engaged in environmental technology innovation and non-environmental technology innovation. The estimation results suggest that both environmental and non-environmental product innovation have positive effects on employment. Moreover, the employment effect of environmental product innovation is not significantly smaller than that of non-environmental product innovation. In contrast to product innovation, non-environmental process innovation has no employment effect, while environmental process innovation increases employment. The decomposition of total employment growth shows that, despite the positive employment effects of environmental technology innovation, its contribution to total employment growth is small.

      • THE INSTITUTIONAL ASYMMETRIES AND PRODUCT INNOVATION OF EMERGING MARKET FIRMS

2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.1

This study examined the impact on a firm’s product innovation success when it expands internationally into a host country with political, economic and cultural institutions different from those it is accustomed to at home. Data on 917 Chinese manufacturing firms’ international activities were analyzed to demonstrate that expansion to countries with political institutions better developed than those of a firm’s home country promotes innovation success, as does expansion to countries characterized by greater individualism than the home country. A more advanced economy in the host country strengthens these relationships. This study was designed to contribute to the extant literature in three areas. First, it was designed to enrich the theory explaining how the institutional environment affects firm performance in an emerging economy. Most previous studies have examined the relationship between the institutional environment and the probability of organizational survival or financial performance (e.g., Xu & Shenkar, 2002; Gaur & Lu, 2007), but this study instead examined the institutional environment and product innovation. Product innovation is, after all, a primary way in which many firms compete and grow (Eisenhardt & Tabrizi, 1995; Wu, 2012). Second, previous research has not clearly identified how different components of the institutional environment individually relate to product innovation success, nor have previous studies sufficiently explored their interactions. This study was designed to fill that gap by integrating the literature on new institutional economics, product innovation and the international expansion of emerging market firms. It sought to derive and test propositions explaining how political institutions and cultural norms relate to product innovation success, and to what extent the relationships depend on economic development. Then, this study extended previous research on the institutional environment to an emerging market context. Evidence clarifying the relationships between different components of the institutional environment and the innovation performance of emerging market firms would be relevant for designing effective and efficient international expansion strategies for emerging market firms. These findings therefore enrich our understanding of the impact of the institutional environment by showing its multifaceted influence on product innovation. Previous research has highlighted the important role of institutional differences between the home and foreign countries in strategic decision making and performance (e.g., Kostova & Zaheer, 1999; Xu & Shenkar, 2002). This study has extended that by clearly demonstrating the importance of differences in political institutions and individualism with respect to innovation performance. This is consistent with the idea that expanding to foreign countries with better-developed political institutions helps a firm avoid the institutional void and political hazards at home and gain access to better-functioning institutions in the host country, which can promote successful product innovation. Individualism in a host country drives a firm to experiment with new technologies and develop new products to satisfy diverse customer needs.

Vol.4 No.3

Environmental deterministic perspectives and resource-based perspectives have different perceptions on the factors that determine corporate performance. While the environmental deterministic viewpoint sees the external environment as having a significant impact on corporate performance. On the other hand, the resource-compliant viewpoint believes that it is important to obtain the necessary resources through appropriate decision-making in order to overcome the uncertainty of the environment. Although the external environmental impact on corporate performance is important, the study is in the position that efforts within the company to cope with environmental uncertainty are necessary. This study identified the role that factors within the company play in the process of affecting the external environment of the company’s performance. This study looked at whether the CEO's innovation direction plays an mediating role in the market environment favorability affecting sales growth rate. The data was collected using a survey method. We collected data from 138 small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Gyeongin area. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 22 packages. According to the analysis, market environment favorability positively affects sales growth rate, and the CEO's innovation direction plays a mediating role between market environment favorability and sales growth rate. The results of this study showed that depending on the market environment, the CEO's interest and willingness to innovate, present a vision for innovation, and institutionalize innovation activities increase management performance through innovation.

Vol.17 No.10

Purpose - Environment-friendly behaviors are diverse and can be motivated by different factors. For example, magnitude of factors affecting recycling behavior could be different from those affecting purchasing of environmentally-friendly products. In this study, the focus is on usage satisfaction of consumers who have purchased environmentally-friendly products. Research design, data, and methodology - For this purpose, data were collected from a total of 345 users of environmentally-friendly products, consisting of 177 users of electric vehicles and 168 users of environmentally-friendly detergents. The study analyzed the relationships among consumer’s innovation propensity, consumer’s environmental concern, and usage satisfaction. In addition, the moderating effect of the product’s innovativeness was examined. Results - The result shows that there is a relationship between consumer’s innovation propensity and consumer’s environmental concern. In particular, it is shown that both consumer’s innovation propensity and consumer’s environmental concern have positive effects on usage satisfaction. Further, there was a moderating effect of the product’s innovativeness. Namely, products rated higher in innovativeness showed a greater effect of consumer’s innovation propensity on usage satisfaction. The degree of the product’s innovativeness also affected the directional paths of the relationships. In the electric vehicle (i.e., high product innovativeness) case, consumer’s innovation propensity had a direct effect on usage satisfaction, as well as an indirect effect through consumer’s environmental concern. In the environmentally-friendly detergent (i.e., low product innovativeness) case, consumer’s innovation propensity only had an indirect effect on usage satisfaction, through consumer’s environmental concern. Conclusions - Theoretical contributions of this study are as follows. Foremost, this is the first study that suggests an existence of a relationship between consumer’s innovation propensity and consumer’s environmental concern. Second, this study showed the positive effect of consumer’s innovation propensity on usage satisfaction of environmentally-friendly products. Third, this study expanded the scope of previous studies by showing the interaction between consumer’s innovation propensity and consumer’s environmental concern. Lastly, this study showed that the effect of these variables on usage satisfaction can differ by the degree of innovativeness of the environmentally-friendly product. The results of the study will have implications for marketers and policy makers in formulating marketing activities and policies.

Vol.35 No.2

The concrete relationships among external environmental factors, environmental strategy, the usage patterns of environmental management control systems (EMCSs), the types of corporate environmental innovations, and innovation openness have not been empirically examined in prior research. This study empirically investigated these relationships to identify and suggest the ways for increasing the degrees of environmental innovations through the use of EMCSs under adopted environmental strategy. The empirical data in this study were collected through the post-survey. 96 valid survey data were finally collected. The results of this study showed that ecological uncertainty and stake-holders’ pressures have a positive impact on the adoptions of ecological efficiency strategy and proactive environmental strategy. It was also observed that a proactive environmental strategy only positively influences the diagnostic and interactive usage of EMCSs. In the results of the effects of usage patterns of EMCSs on the types of innovation, it was showed that the EMCSs’ diagnostic use positively influences the levels of environmental-friendly product innovation, and interactive usage has a positive effect on the degrees of process innovation. According to the results, it was indicated that innovation openness has a moderating impact on the relationship between EMCSs’ diagnostic usage and environmental-friendly product innovation. Thus, it was demonstrated that under high levels of innovation openness, a high degree of environmental-friendly innovation can be achieved through the use of EMCSs. Based on these results, it is concluded that different usage types of EMCSs activate different forms of an environmental-friendly innovation in manufacturing firms. It is also broadly proposed that there exist influence relationships among the kinds of environmental strategy of a firm, the usage forms of EMCSs, and the different types of environmental-friendly innovations.
