Using jet propulsion, squid can swim at high speed or at low speed with good maneuverability, which makes them quiet valuable to be studied for biomimetic purposes. Vortex rings usually occur in the highly-unsteady jet flow in squid, and they play quite important roles in the jet propulsion of squid. This paper tries to investigate the squid jet structure by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. A simplified squid body model was established. The mantle motion during jet locomotion was explicitly included into the simulations by using a deforming mesh. By solving the 2D-axisymmetric, incompressible, laminar, unsteady Navier.Stokes equations, different vortex evolution behaviors were observed depending on different mantle contraction velocities and nozzle diameters. An important parameter, the formation number of the vortex rings, L/D, which decide the propulsive efficiency of jet propulsion directly, was also discussed in this paper. The numerical results show that adult squid propel themselves by long jet flows with a large formation number, L/D. The results also prove that smaller squid have larger relative funnel diameter. Interaction of vortex rings was simulated in two jet process, which might interpret squid increase their contraction frequencies with elevated swimming speed. To validate the force generated in the simulation, a bionc squid mantel jet propulsor is investigated and tested.

This study explores the influence of cooperative vehicle infrastructure system (CVIS) on the driver’s visual and driving performance. Taking the work zone as an example, a driving simulation experiment involving 37 drivers has been conducted to collect driver’s eye movement and vehicle running data in the same scenario with and without CVIS information respectively. Next, the nonparametric test and grey relational analysis (GRA) have been used to compare the specific performance and to analyze the correlations among the multi-stage of driver’s information process. The results present that CVIS information has the potential to alleviate the driver’s tension and the difficulty of information perception. Meanwhile, the driver tends to search visual information more actively and complete the lane changing behavior earlier. Further analysis indicates that CVIS information can reduce the influence of mental workload on lane-changing decisions, and enhance the correlation between visual information processing and lane-changing decisions, as well as the effect of decision-making timing on the running state. Therefore, drivers’ speed control ability was improved and the traffic flow was smoother. The findings give an insight into the influence mechanism of the cooperative information on driving performance and provide a direction for a comprehensive assessment of CVIS based on human factors.

A new quinoline-based acylhydrazone (1) has been synthesized and applied as a fluorescent probe. Probe 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ with fluorescence "ON-OFF" behavior in HEPES buffered (1‰ DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution. The on-site generated 1-$Cu^{2+}$ complex displays excellent selectivity to sulfide ions with fluorescence "OFF-ON" performance through copper displacement approach.

In this paper, the effects of thermal treatment on the mechanical properties, fracturecharacteristics, and roughness of the fracture surface of granite under the Brazilian splitting testare studied using an electro-hydraulic servo testing machine with an acoustic emission (AE)and digital image correlation (DIC) system. The test results show that: 1) Thermal treatmentdegrades the physical and mechanical properties. Density, P-wave velocity, and peak load ofgranite decrease with the increase in thermal treatment temperature (T). 2) With the increasing T,the fracture pattern changes from “I” type tensile fractures to “Y” type tensile-shear mixedfailure. The DIC results show that the fracture process changes from transient to progressive. 3) AE counts show that granite gradually changes from brittleness to ductility with the increaseof T. Furthermore, the variations in the RA and AF values of the AE events indicate that theincreasing T leads to an increase in shear cracks in granite. After the test, 4) the roughness ofthe fracture surface of the specimen was analyzed using a spatial digitizer. The results showthat thermal treatment significantly improved the fracture surface's asperity height androughness. 5) Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results revealed that thermal treatmentleads to the generation of micro-cracks in granite and the desquamation of mineral grains, which influences the macro properties of granite.

Fluorescent and colorimetric recognition properties of 2-(4-N-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone)-8-hydroxyquinoline (1) in buffered aqueous solution (1% DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) have been examined. Sensor 1 displays highly selective and sensitive recognition to Cu2+ with fluorescence “ON-OFF” performance. The in situ formed 1-Cu2+ complex exhibits an excellent selectivity toward sulfide ions with fluorescence “OFF-ON” behavior via Cu2+ displacement approach. Thus, relay recognition of Cu2+ and sulfide by a known molecule 1 has been achieved.

A novel polysiloxane (G_xD_y) containing a large number of epoxide groups and flexible segments was synthesized by hydrolysis and condensation of 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and dimethyldiethoxylsilane (DMDES) to toughen the 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate (ERL-4221). The chemical structures of G_xD_y (molar ratio of GPTMS to DMDES is x/y) were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ^29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and G_4D_6 have the highest degree of branching. The thermal and mechanical properties, morphologies and transmittance of the cured epoxy resins were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile testing, fracture testing, SEM, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The T_g of the G_xD_y modified epoxy depends on the structure and addition content of G_xD_y. The TGA results under a N_2 demonstrate that the thermal stability of the epoxy resin was improved by G_xD_y and the Si-(O-)_3 from the GPTMS part forms silica more easily than the Si-(O-)_2 from the DMDES part. The addition of 10 phr G_4D_6 resulted in greatly improved toughness, but maintained the transmittance of the epoxy resin. In addition the morphology of the fracture surfaces showed that G_xD_y can be dispersed homogeneously in the epoxy resin, and the toughening follows the pinning and crack tip bifurcation mechanism. In conclusion, G_xD_y can increase the toughness and thermal properties of the ERL-4221 system simultaneously, and maintain its transmittance. Therefore, G_xD_y can be used as a toughening agent for light emitting diode (LED)-packaging epoxy resins.
