        Optical Planar Waveguides Fabricated by Using Carbon Ion Implantation in Terbium Gallium Garnet

        Optical planar waveguides in terbium-gallium-garnet (TGG) crystals are promising photonic devices, particularly for optical isolators and rotators. In this work, to the best of our knowledge, we report on the fabrication and the characterization of TGG waveguides for the first time. The fabrication procedure involved carbon ion implantation at an energy of 6.0 MeV and a fluence of 5.0×1014 ions/cm2. The effective refractive indices of the propagation modes in the carbonimplanted waveguide were measured by using the prism-coupling technique. The profile of the refractive index and the distribution of the near-field intensity were calculated by using the reflectivity calculation method and the finite-difference beam propagation method, respectively. The carbon-implanted TGG waveguide is considered to be a candidate for a magneto-optical photonic device.

        The effect of Al and B on the luminescent property of porous silicon

        In this paper, we studied the PL property and the surface morphology of porous silicon prepared from Ntype single silicon wafers coated with and without Al film. By introducing the Al film on the surface of silicon wafer before etching, the morphology of porous silicon exhibits obvious discrimination compared with that of the conventional porous silicon, which can be explained by the formation mechanism of the samples, and the emission property of two-type porous silicon also showed the clear difference, which may be attributed to the discrepancy in the structural configuration of the samples. Furthermore, it was found that the blue emission decreased and the green emission was almost completely quenched after boron-particle deposition, which is attributed to the structural change or annihilation of the emission defects during annealing process.

        Effects of Sperm Pretreatments and In vitro Culture Systems on Development of In vitro Fertilized Embryos Derived from Prepubertal Boer Goat Oocytes in China

        Use of oocytes from prepubertal animals for in vitro embryo production holds potential application for reducing generation intervals and increasing genetic progress through embryo transfer. The objective of these studies was to compare the effect of three sperm pretreatments (prior to in vitro fertilization) and seven embryo culture protocols on fertilization rate and (or) subsequent development of in vitro fertilized embryos derived from oocytes harvested from ovaries of 1-6 month old prepubertal Boer goats in China. Cleavage rates were highest for embryos fertilized with heparin-treated versus calcium ionophore- or caffeine-treated sperm. Similar rates of blastocyst development were observed using heparin- and ionophore-treated sperm, which were higher than obtained with caffeine-treated sperm. No differences in cleavage or blastocyst rates were observed following embryo culture in basal medias (synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF), Charles Rosenkrans 1 (CR1) or tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199)) containing 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). Cumulus or oviductal cell co-culture did not enhance cleavage or blastocyst rates relative to culture in SOF+10% FBS. Replacement of FBS in SOF medium with 0.3% BSA increased cleavage rates, but did not increase rates of blastocyst development. Sequential culture in SOF+0.3% BSA followed by SOF+10% FBS increased blastocyst yield versus continuous culture in SOF+10% FBS and tended to increase blastocyst yield versus continuous culture in SOF+0.3% BSA. These results demonstrate a pronounced effects of sperm pretreatments and in vitro embryo culture systems on rates of blastocyst development and provide a potential protocol (sperm pretreatment with heparin and sequential embryo culture in SOF+0.3% BSA followed by SOF+10% FBS) for generation of the significant numbers of in vitro produced blastocysts from oocytes of prepubertal Boer goats necessary for application of embryo transfer in rural regions of China for distribution of Boer goat genetics.

        DeepPTP: A Deep Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction Model for Traffic Intersection

        Compared with vehicle trajectories, pedestrian trajectories have stronger degrees of freedom and complexity, which poses a higher challenge to trajectory prediction tasks. This paper designs a mode to divide the trajectory of pedestrians at a traffic intersection, which converts the trajectory regression problem into a trajectory classification problem. This paper builds a deep model for pedestrian trajectory prediction at intersections for the task of pedestrian short-term trajectory prediction. The model calculates the spatial correlation and temporal dependence of the trajectory. More importantly, it captures the interactive features among pedestrians through the Attention mechanism. In order to improve the training speed, the model is composed of pure convolutional networks. This design overcomes the single-step calculation mode of the traditional recurrent neural network. The experiment uses Vulnerable Road Users trajectory dataset for related modeling and evaluation work. Compared with the existing models of pedestrian trajectory prediction, the model proposed in this paper has advantages in terms of evaluation indicators, training speed and the number of model parameters.

        Bacterial Species and Biochemical Characteristic Investigations of Nostoc flagelliforme Concentrates during its Storage

        Preservation of fresh algae plays an important role in algae seed subculture and aquaculture. The determination and examination of the changes of cell viability, composition, and bacterial species during storage would help to take suitable preservation methods to prolong the preservation time of fresh algae. Nostoc flagelliforme is a kind of edible cyanobacterium with important herbal and dietary values. This article investigated the changes of bacterial species and biochemical characteristics of fresh N. flagelliforme concentrate during natural storage. It was found that the viability of cells decreased along with the storage time. Fourteen bacteria strains in the algae concentrate were identified by PCR-DGGE and were grouped into four phyla, including Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Among them, Enterococcus viikkiensis may be a concern in the preservation. Eleven volatile organic compounds were identified from N. flagelliforme cells, in which geosmin could be treated as an indicator of the freshness of N. flagelliforme. The occurrence of indole compound may be an indicator of the degradation of cells.

        Static and dynamic characteristics of a novel moving magnet linear compressor

        Linear compressors are popular in the field of household refrigeration due to their high efficiency and excellent capacity modulation capability. In this study, we proposed a novel moving magnet linear compressor and investigated its static and dynamic characteristics. Static performance included static shaft force, force constant, and magnetic spring, which were examined via finite element analysis and verified by conducting specific thrust experiments. For dynamic characteristics, resonance frequency, piston stroke, and piston offset were calculated by considering the magnetic spring effect. Compared with the results that didn’t consider the magnetic spring effect, higher accuracy was achieved under various conditions. In addition, piston offset increased with discharge pressure, but it was insensitive to changes in piston stroke. The motor efficiency of the designed linear compressor prototype can reach 0.92 under no-load condition and 0.80 under a discharge pressure of 0.6 MPa with a stroke of 9 mm under air condition.

        Natural gas vehicles have been widely used around the world as a mode of green transportation. The defect detection method for a vehicle cylinder, which is the energy storage component of a natural gas vehicle, is essential for ensuring safety. Current vehicle cylinder testing methods are relatively simple and cannot quickly and accurately detect internal defects in the winding layer of the cylinder. In this study, the effect of winding layer defects on the temperature behavior of cylinders during filling was studied using finite element simulation and infrared thermal imaging technology. The results show that a defect in the winding layer acts as a source of thermal resistance that hinders heat transfer. The more serious the defect is, the greater the hindrance of the heat transfer is. According to this principle, an evaluation model based on the R parameter was developed for the temperature changes due to defects, and a method for quantitatively correlating the maximum R value with the defect depth was established, thereby providing a practical approach for the rapid detection and evaluation of defects in cylinder winding layers.

        Xylazole inhibits NO-cGMP pathway in fetal rat nerve cells

        Background: Xylazole (Xyl) is a veterinary anesthetic that is structurally and functionally similar to xylazine. However, the effects of Xyl in vitro remain unknown. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the anesthetic mechanism of Xyl using fetal rat nerve cells treated with Xyl. Methods: Fetal rat nerve cells cultured for seven days were treated with 10, 20, 30, and 40 μg/ mL Xyl for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min. Variations of amino acid neurotransmitters (AANTs), Nitric oxide-Cyclic GMP (NO-cGMP) signaling pathway, and ATPase were evaluated. Results: Xyl decreased the levels of cGMP and NO in nerve cells. Furthermore, Xyl affected the AANT content and Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase activity in nerve cells. These findings suggested that Xyl inhibited the NO-cGMP signaling pathway in nerve cells in vitro. Conclusions: This study provided new evidence that the anesthetic and analgesic effects of Xyl are related to the inhibition of the NO-cGMP signaling pathway.

      • Discrete Time Modeling of Wireless Power Transfer System Using LCC Compensation Topology

        In recent years, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has developed rapidly. However, conventional modeling methods for the dynamics of WPT suffer from the order increase problem and complicated derivations and expressions. In this paper, a discrete time modeling method is used for wireless power transfer systems which use magnetic resonant coupling. The proposed method aims on the dynamics of the overall WPT system, including the nonlinear inverter and rectifier. The orders of the developed models are lower than that of the generalized state space averaging method and the extended describing functions technique. Control to output voltage small-signal behaviors predicted by the discrete time model are verified by circuit simulation results.
