        안결막에 감염된 동양안충 (Thelazia callipaeda)의 형태학적 소견

        저자들은 1996년 7월에 강원도 춘천지역에서 농사업을 하는 60세 남자의 좌측 안결막에서 총 10마리의 유백색 선충을 적출하였다. 적출된 충체를 형태학적으로 관찰한 결과 Thelazia callipaeda Railliet et Henry, 1910으로 동정하였으며, 그 성적은 다음과 같다. 관찰된 유백색의 충체는 암놈 7마리, 숫놈 3마리였으며 충체의 크기는 암놈 11.91∼12.77×0.25∼0.26㎜, 숫놈 8.83∼9.32×0.24∼0.25㎜ 였다. 암놈과 숫놈의 구강 깊이는 각각 0.023∼0.026, 0.022∼0.023㎜이고, 충체전단에서 식도-장 접합부까지의 길이는 각각 0.58∼0.60, 0.56∼0.58㎜이었다. 표피소극의 배열은 전단부위에서 ㎜당 260∼290열이고 중앙부위에서 ㎜당 203∼207열 정도의 갯수가 관찰되었다. 그리고 암놈의 자궁내에는 coil상의 성숙된 유충이 관찰되었고 숫놈의 배설강구 전방의 유두수는 8쌍이었다. 이상과 같이 암수 충체에 대한 형태특징을 분석한 결과 Thelazia callipaeda로 동정되었다. The authors presented the human Thelaziasis case in Korea, with the review of the literatures. The patient was 60-year-old farmer who had lived in Chunchoun since birth. He complained lacrimation and foreign body sensation of the left eye. Total 10 worms, appeared to be slender milky-white nematodes, were extracted from the left upper conjuctival sac by authors. Micrograph morphological features are as follows: Three male worms are 8.83∼9.32㎜ in length, 0.24∼0.25㎜ in width, 259∼263 cuticular striations per mm, and showing cloaca with spicules. seven female worms are 11.91∼12.77㎜ in length, 0.25∼0.26㎜ in width, 259∼289 cuticular striations per mm, and vulva opening locating anterior to esophago-intestinal junction. From the above findings, these nematodes were confirmed as Thelazia callipaeda Railliet and Henry, 1910.

      • 보신 관광에서 감염된 수입성 Sparganosis 1예 : Intake of Thailand Snake during Trip

        Human sparganosois was reported more than 100 cases in Korean population. However no case reported yet in Korea as a patient was infected by sparganum from other geographical area, such as Thailand. The case we are reported here is a 38 year-old Korean male who had been suffered from mass being a small, round and soft consistance in upper portion of his right thigh. The patients stated that he had an opportunity to eat living snake in Bangkok, Thailand during trip. As therapy praziquantel (75㎎/㎏/day) was given p.o. for 14 days, but in vain to cure. Following medical treatment, surgical exicision was performed to remove a alive, soft, whitish-milky, mobile and elongated sparganum. Serlogical test by micro-ELISA for sparganum-specific antibody revealed a high serum antibody level of absorbance 0.67 (positive criterion: absorbance 0.22).

        Excited State Dynamics of Curcumin and Solvent Hydrogen Bonding

        Curcumin is a natural product with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antifungal functions. As it is known that the excited state intramolecular hydrogen transfer of curcumin are related to its medicinal antioxidant mechanism, we investigated its excited state dynamics by using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in an effort to understand the molecule's therapeutic effect in terms of its photophysics and photochemistry. We found that stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding with solvents weakens the intramolecular hydrogen bonding and decelerates the dynamical process of the enolic hydrogen. Exceptions are found in methanol and ethylene glycol due to their nature as simultaneous hydrogen bonding donor-acceptor and high viscosity solvent, respectively.

        한국인에서 발생한 Sweet 증후군에 대한분석

        N/A Objectives: Sweet`s syndrome(acute febrile neutrophilic dermetosis) is characterized by fever, neutrophilia, erythematous painful cutaneous plaques, a dense dermal infiltrate onsisting of mature neutrophils, and a rapid response to steroid therapy, This condition is clinically important because it is associated with malignancy and it should be one of the differential diagnosis in the febrile immunocompromized patients with skin lesion, In spite of its clinical importance, there was no report on the epidemiologic characteristics of Sweets syndrome in Korean patients so far because of the rarity of Sweet`s syndrome, This study was performed to investigate characteristics and clinical significance of Sweet`s syndrome in Korean patients. Methods : The authors report a case of Sweet`s syndrome associated with acute myelogenous leukemia, and review the other 23 Korean patients with Sweet's syndrome that have been published in the literature. The characteristics of malignancy-associa- ted Sweet`s syndrome are compared with those of Sweet`s syndrome without malignancy association. Results: 1) Twenty-four cases of Sweet`s syndrome were analysed. Male to female ratio was 8:16 and the mean age was 44.8± 11.7 years. In 79% of patients, fever was noticed during the episodes of Sweet's syndrome. The most frequent sites of skin lesions were the upper extremities(83%), followed by face and head(75%), the lower extremities(75%), neck(46%), and trunk (13%). 2) Associated underlying systemic disorders were present in 15(62%) of the patients. The most frequent associations were chronic inflammatory bowel disease in seven patients, hematologic neoplasia in five, and solid neoplasia in one patients. 3) Leukocyte counts(mean 13,400±8,000/mm3) were higher than 10,000/mm3 in 16(67%) of patients. Erythrocyte sedimentation rates(mean 66.8±44.4mm/ hour) were elevated in 18(82%) of patients. 4) Skin lesion improvements were observed within 2 to 5 days from the initiation of steroid therapy. 5) Malignancies were associated in 6 patients. The initial appearance of Sweet`s syndrome lesions preceded or occurred concurrently with the detection of previously unsuspected malignancy in 67%(4 of 6 patients), In malignancy associated Sweet's syndrome, relative male preponderance, older age, and higher leukocyte counts were observed compared with Sweet's syndrome which is not associated with malignancy. There were no statistical significances, however. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was the only statistically significant parameter. Conclusion: The characteristics of Sweet`s syndrome in Korean patients were similar to the characteristics of their western counterparts. Workup for malignancy seems appropriate far newly diagnosed Sweet`s syndrome patients in case of elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocytosis, old age, and male sex

        Effects of the Duration of Liquid Feeding on Performance and Nutrient Digestibility in Weaned Pigs

        A total of 72 castrated, crossbred ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$) piglets ($5.7{\pm}0.7kg$ BW) were allotted to one of three treatments including: a dry crumbled feed fed for 40 days; liquid feed provided for 10 days followed by dry crumbled feed for 30 days; and liquid feed provided for 20 days followed by dry crumbled feed for 20 days. Liquid feed was produced fresh each day by mixing water with dry crumbled feed at a ratio of 3:1. Pigs fed liquid feed for 10 days had a higher weight gain during the first 10 days (+16.8%; p = 0.01) and over the entire experimental period (+4.9%; p = 0.07) than pigs offered dry feed. Pigs fed liquid feed for 20 days also had a higher weight gain during the period from d 0 to 10 (+12.8%; p = 0.01), from d 10 to 20 (+8.5%; p = 0.06) and from d 0 to 20 (+9.7%; p = 0.01) than pigs offered dry feed. Pigs fed liquid feed for the first 10 days had higher feed intakes from d 0 to 10 (+22.6%; p = 0.01) and from d 0 to 40 (+5.3%; p = 0.02) than pigs offered dry feed. Pigs fed liquid feed for the first 20 days had a higher feed intake from d 0 to 10 (+21.8%; p = 0.01), from d 10 to 20 (+10.6%; p = 0.06), from d 0 to 20 (+14.6%; p = 0.01) and from d 0 to 40 (+6.6%; p = 0.02) than pigs offered dry feed. Feed conversion from d 0 to 40 tended to be poorer for pigs fed liquid feed during the first 20 days (p = 0.08) indicating an increase in feed wastage with liquid feeding. Nutrient digestibility at day 10 was unaffected by dietary treatment. However, at day 30, pigs fed liquid feed for 10 days had higher digestibility of dry matter (p = 0.08), energy (p = 0.10), crude protein (p = 0.03) and neutral detergent fibre (p = 0.05) than pigs fed liquid feed for 20 days. In conclusion, liquid feeding for 10 or 20 days increased the performance of weaned pigs during the specific time period that liquid feeding occurred but there were no carry over effects into subsequent production periods.

        The aim of this paper is to extract features from each news scenes for example, symbol icon which can be distinct each broadcasting crop, icon and caption which are has feature and important information for the scene in respectively. In this paper, we propose extraction methods of caption that has important problem of news videos and it can be classified in three steps. First of all, we converted that input images from video frame to YIQ color vector in first stage. And then, we divide input image into regions in clear by using equalized color histogram of input image. In last, we extract news icon in selected key frames by the difference of inter-histogram and can divide each scene by the extracted icon. In this paper, we used comparison method of edge histogram instead of complex methods based on color histogram or wavelet or moving objects, so we shorten computation through using simpler algorithm and we shown good result of feature's extraction.

      • LED light stress induced biomass and fatty acid production in microalgal biosystem, <i>Acutodesmus obliquus</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Microbial algal system can serve as a potential source for the production of much high value bioproducts and biofuels. The quality and intensity of light are the key elements to optimize the production of algal biomass and fatty acid contents. This study presents the effect of differential LED flashing light conditions on the growth of microalgae, <I>Acutodesmus obliquus</I>. The induced light stress was optimized for its biomass and fatty acid content. The microalgae are exposed to various frequency of intermittent LED flashing light (blue and red lights) at three different phases in the 18day cell growth (log, lag and stationary phase). The frequency of light flashing rate was adjusted to 120, 10, 5, 3.75, and 1times per min. The effect of light stress on growth and fatty acids composition of <I>A. obliquus</I> induced an increase in algae growth and fatty acid production. Different optimal timing for light stress was subjected to elucidate the effect of light stress on algae growth and fatty acid production. The results showed an increase in the algae growth (1.2mg/L of chl a content) under light stress condition at FT10 (flashing time, 10times per min) from the initial day (log phase) compared with the control experiment (0.4mg/L of chl a content). However, the total fatty acids (71mg/g) and volumetric FAME production (9.4ml/l) level was found to be significant under FT5 (flashing time, 5times per min), adopting flashing light from day 10 (stationary phase). TEM studies also revealed the deposition of lipid to be largest in the 18day old cells under flashing light (FT5) condition, representing maximum accumulation of lipids bodies (up to 770nm diameter in particle size) occupying approximately 42% of the total area of the cell.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> LED light stress on algal biomass and fatty acid production were studied. </LI> <LI> Flashing lights exposed on log, lag, and stationary phases. </LI> <LI> FT10 showed an increase in the algae growth. </LI> <LI> Total fatty acids and volumetric FAME production were higher under FT5. </LI> <LI> Deposition of lipid was found maximum in the 18day old cells (FT5). </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Post LGM Fluvial Environment and Palynological Changes of South Korea

        In Korea terrestrial fluvial sequences can be used as pedological and sedimentological markers indicating a millenium-scale environmental and climatic changes imprinted in fluvial sub-environments, which in turn are represented by the cyclicity of fluvial sands, backswamp organic muds, and flooding muds intercalations of frostcracked or dessicated brown paleosols. Post LGM and Holocene fluvial and alluvial sedimentary sequences of Korea are formed in such landscapes of coastal, floodplain, backswamp and hillslope areas. Among them, the most outstanding depositional sequences are fluvial gravels, sands and organic mud deposits in coastal, fluvial, or alluvial wetlands. The aim of this study is to explain the sedimentary sequences and palynofloral zones since the last 15,000years, on the basis of organic muds layers intercalated in fluvial sand deposits. Jangheung-ri site of Nam river, Soro-ri site of Miho river, Youngsan rivermouth site in Muan, Oksan-ri site of Hampyeong and Sanggap-ri site of Gochang are illustrated to interpret their sedimentary facies, radiocarbon datings, and palynofloral zonation. Up to the Middle to Late Last Glacial(up to 30-35Ka), old river-bed, flooding, and backswamp sequences contain such arboreal pollens as Pinus, Abies, and Picea, and rich in non-arboreal pollens like Cyperaceae, Gramineae, Ranunculaceae, and Compositae. During the LGM and post-LGM periods until Younger Dryas, vegetation has changes from the sub-alpine conifer forest(up to about 17-11Ka), through the conifer and broad-leaved deciduous forest, or mixed forest (formed during 16,680-13,010yrB.P), to the deciduous and broad-leaved forest (older than 9,500yrB.P). In the Earliest Holocene flooding deposits, fragments of plant roots are abundant and subjected to intensive pedogenic processes. During Holocene, three arboreal pollen zones are identified in the ascending order of strata; Pinus-Colyus zone(mixed conifer and deciduous broad-leaved forest, about up to 10Ka), Alnus-Quercus forest (the cool temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, about 10Ka-2Ka), and Pinus forest (the conifer forest, about after 2Ka), as examplified in Soro-ri site of Cheonwon county. The palynological zonations of Soro-ri, Oksan-ri, Sanggap-ri, Youngsan estuary, and Gimhae fluvial plain have been recognized as a provisional correlation tool, and zonations based on fluvial backswamp and flooding deposits shows a similar result with those of previous researchers.
