As the nation’s largest chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohort, the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-CKD) was established to investigate the clinical course, risk factors for progression, and adverse outcomes of CKD. From 2011 to 2016, the KNOW-CKD recruited 2,238 adult patients with CKD from stage G1 to G5 who were not receiving renal replacement therapy from nine tertiary care hospitals throughout Korea. As of 2019, the KNOW-CKD has published more than 50 articles in the areas of socio-economics, nutrition, quality of life, health-related habits, CKD progression, cardiovascular comorbidity and outcome, anemia, mineral bone disease, biomarker discovery, and international and inter-ethnic comparisons. The KNOW-CKD will eventually offer a prediction model for long-term consequences of CKD, such as the occurrences of end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular disease, and death, thereby enabling the identification and treatment of at-risk populations that require extra medical attention.

Food waste (FW) has been recognized as a critical problem in Korea and many research was conducted to efficiently utilize or treat FW. Main purpose of this research was to evaluate a feasibility for producing fermented organic fertilizer with vegetable waste (VW). Three different organic materials (saw dust, coco peat, and waste mushroom media) were mixed with VW at the rate of 30, 40, 50% respectively. Total days of composting experiment were 35 days and each sub samples were collected at every 5 days from starting of composting. Result showed that inner temperature of composting was increased to 60±4°C within 5~10 days depending on varied organic materials and mixing ratio. Among different treatment, the highest increase of inner temperature was observed when 30% of saw dust was mixed with VW. After finishing composting experiment, maturity of each compost was evaluated with solvita and germination test. Maturity index (MI) of each treatment was ranged between 5~7 indicating that manufactured fertilizer was curing or finished stage. Calculated germination index (GI) was at the range of 57.83~101.16 depending on organic materials and mixing ratio. Both MI and GI showed that manufactured fertilizer was met for fertilizer criteria while control (VW only) was not adequate for composting. Overall, VW can be utilized for making organic fertilizer mixing with saw dust, coco peat and more research should be conducted to make high quality of organic fertilizer with vegetable waste.

Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has a significant role in the regulation of blood pressure. The use of RAS blocker (angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin II receptor blocker [ARB]) for hypertension is common, but this medication during pregnancy may lead to dysgenesis of renal tubule, hypoperfusion and hypoplastic growth of skull and pulmonary vascular hypoplasia in fetus. We report a female baby born to a mother who took ARB up to gestational age 35 weeks, and then did not take ARB for 10 days until delivery on IUP 36+3 weeks. The baby suffered from hypotension and anuria for few days but suffered severe respiratory difficulty and pulmonary hypertension requiring mechanical ventilation with inhalation of nitric oxide. The baby had also limb contracture, defects of skull ossification, and thrombocytosis. After weaning of mechanical ventilation, the baby had a polyuria and was diagnosed with transient partial nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. The baby showed polycythemia with normal kidney function at 20 months of age. The baby showed normal growth and development based on the results of the Korean Development Screening Test with 20 months of corrected ages.

To analyse the experimental results of PF magnet during the commissioning test of KSTAR, a numerical model of the PF1 magnet and its CICC was developed for the evaluation of Joule heat from the AC loss due to the time varying field profile along the conductor during ramping-up or down taking into account the ferromagnetic effect of Incoloy 908 jacket. The calculation routines was carefully updated to make a proper estimation of the AC loss and applied to the estimation of AC loss parameters of the CICC of the KSTAR PF magnet.

The KSTAR project was started in 1996 and conducted in three phases, the conceptual design phase (1996-1998), the R&D and engineering design phase (1998-2002), and the construction phase (2002-2007). The mission of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) Project is to develop a steady-state-capable advanced superconducting tokamak for establishing a scientific and technological basis for an attractive fusion reactor. Since the KSTAR mission includes the achievement of a steady-state-capable operation, the use of superconducting coils is an obvious choice for the magnet system and the long pulse current drive and heating systems are also the important aspect of the KSTAR design features. The advanced tokamak aspect of the mission is incorporated in the design features associated with flexible plasma shaping, double-null divertor and passive stabilizer, internal control coils. All the major components are in the stage of the fabrication and assembly for the completion of the KSTAR construction in the year 2007.
