        Numerical Investigation on Aero-optical Reduction for Supersonic Turbulent Mixing Layer

        The tangential injection flow commingled with the mainstream could be abstracted as mixing layer, and profound importance is attached to aero-optical reduction for film-cooling target-seeking vehicles in engineering application. Leveraging the in-house code based on explicit fifth-order Weighted Compact Nonlinear Scheme and ray-tracing method, the supersonic mixing layer is numerically simulated to investigate the effect of inflow disturbance on large-scale structure growth and aero-optical reduction. The vortex growth would be stimulated somewhere when the frequency of inflow perturbation added is close to the local characteristic most unstable value. Based on such cognition, different techniques of super-harmonic and sub-harmonic disturbance are employed for effective aero-optical suppression schemes in the following research. The sub-harmonic one without phase shift shows such ability in the whole turbulent region, and additional perturbation of white noise is also promising for better control consequence.

        Scutellarin protects against doxorubicin-induced acute cardiotoxicity and regulates its accumulation in the heart

        The clinical use of doxorubicin (DOX) is limited by its dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. The present study investigated the effects of scutellarin against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in rats using pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic approaches. DOX (20 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) as a single dose, and scutellarin (5 mg/kg/day) was injected intravenously (i.v.) for 3 days. Rats treated with DOX showed acute cardiotoxicity as indicated by the elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity (4057.8 ± 107.2 vs. 2032.7 ± 70.95), tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) level (2.083 ± 0.10 vs. 1.103 ± 0.09), cardiac troponin T (cTnT) concentration (0.1695 ± 0.0114 ng/mL), the decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (47.75 ± 15.79 vs. 78.72 ± 7.25) and left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) (20.66 ± 8.06 vs. 43.7 ± 6.76) compared with those of the control group. Cotreatment with scutellarin significantly decreased the LDH activity (2595.9 ± 72.73), MDA level (1.380 ± 0.06), cTnT concentration (0.0222 ± 0.0041 ng/ m L), increased LVEF (76.70 ± 3.91) and LVFS (40.28 ± 3.68). Histopathological studies showed disruption of cardiac tissues in the DOX groups. Cotreatment with scutellarin reduced the damage to cardiac tissues. In the pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution study, scutellarin reduced the heart tissue exposure to DOX but did not change the AUC of plasma. These results suggest that scutellarin can protect against DOX-induced acute cardiotoxicity through its antioxidant activity and alterations of heart concentrations.

      • No Association between Traffic Density and Risk of Childhood Leukemia: a Meta-analysis

        Background: While many studies have concluded that local traffic density is positively associated with childhood leukemia, the results are inconsistent. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from January 1979 to December 2013. We selected and assessed journal articles evaluating the relationship between local traffic density and the risk of leukemia in children. The analysis was carried out using STATA version 12.0. Results: A total of 11 articles, including 12 estimates of effect, were included in our meta-analysis. The summary effect size from the random-effects model, expressed as an odds ratio, was 1.03 (95% CI: 0.98-1.09, p=0.002). No significant association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia was found. Similar conclusions were found on subgroup analysis. Conclusions: The results of our meta-analysis suggested no association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. This implies that living in close proximity to roads with heavy traffic may not increase the risk of childhood leukemia. However, further high-quality prospective trials are needed to support these results.

        Experimental study on propagation behavior of three-dimensional cracks influenced by intermediate principal stress

        Many laboratory experiments on crack propagation under uniaxial loading and biaxial loading have been conducted in the past using transparent materials such as resin, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), etc. However, propagation behaviors of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in rock or rock-like materials under tri-axial loading are often considerably different. In this study, a series of true tri-axial loading tests on the rock-like material with two semi-ellipse pre-existing cracks were performed in laboratory to investigate the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics and propagation characteristics of 3D crack groups influenced by intermediate principal stress. Compared with previous experiments under uniaxial loading and biaxial loading, the tests under true tri-axial loading showed that shear cracks, anti-wing cracks and secondary cracks were the main failure mechanisms, and the initiation and propagation of tensile cracks were limited. Shear cracks propagated in the direction parallel to pre-existing crack plane. With the increase of intermediate principal stress, the critical stress of crack initiation increased gradually, and secondary shear cracks may no longer coalesce in the rock bridge. Crack aperture decreased with the increase of intermediate principal stress, and the failure is dominated by shear fracturing. There are two stages of fracture development: stable propagation stage and unstable failure stage. The AE events occurred in a zone parallel to pre-existing crack plane, and the AE zone increased gradually with the increase of intermediate principal stress, eventually forming obvious shear rupture planes. This shows that shear cracks initiated and propagated in the pre-existing crack direction, forming a shear rupture plane inside the specimens. The paths of fracturing inside the specimens were observed using the Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning and reconstruction.

        Buying fresh food on online has become a trend recently, while the early morning fresh food delivery market shows a great growth potential. In this paper, we examine the relationship among customization, service quality and intention to use. A second-order Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) and Baron & Kenny"s methods are used to understand the relationship between the latent variables. The data from online survey of 369 customers are collected. We find that customization positively affects service quality, and service quality has a positive effect on intention to use. However, the impact of customization on intention to use is not significant. We show that service quality perfectly mediates variables between customization and intention to use.

        中國在國際海事私法條約制定中的價値取向 -從談判到規范形式

        Maritime law is International, however every sovereign state has promulgated its own maritime law which causes conflicts. Uniform maritime commerce requires uniform private international maritime law and the best way to unify maritime law is by maritime convention. However, during the course of drafting and adopting the private international maritime convention, we can see sharp debate over every aspect that is concerned with every related maritime group and nation of maritime or non-maritime interests. On the one hand, the parties of cargo interests either states or maritime entities, are striving to impose more obligations on the parties of maritime interests, on the other hand, the parties of maritime interests are trying to maintain the old system. This kind of conflicts are involved not only economic interests but also political interests both domestically and internationally. China is a big country, though it is still a developing one. In the drafting of maritime convention, China cannot take the position of preventing uniformity of maritime law, but China shall have its own standpoint: both to improve the unification of maritime law and protect its own shipping industry.

      • Renal-Clearable Hollow Bismuth Subcarbonate Nanotubes for Tumor Targeted Computed Tomography Imaging and Chemoradiotherapy

        <P>Although metallic nanomaterials with high X-ray attenuation coefficients have been widely used as X-ray computed tomography (CT) contrast agents, their intrinsically poor biodegradability requires them to be cleared from the body to avoid any potential toxicity. On the other hand, extremely small-sized nanomaterials with outstanding renal clearance properties are not much effective for tumor targeting because of their too rapid clearance in vivo. To overcome this dilemma, here we report on the hollow bismuth subcarbonate nanotubes (BNTs) assembled from renal-clearable ultrasmall bismuth subcarbonate nanoclusters for tumor-targeted imaging and chemoradiotherapy. The BNTs could be targeted to tumors with high efficiency and exhibit a high CT contrast effect. Moreover, simultaneous radio- and chemotherapy using drug-loaded BNTs could significantly suppress tumor volumes, highlighting their potential application in CT imaging-guided therapy. Importantly, the elongated nanotubes could be disassembled into isolated small nanoclusters in the acidic tumor microenvironment, accelerating the payload release and kidney excretion. Such body clearable CT contrast agent with high imaging performance and multiple therapeutic functions shall have a substantial potential for biomedical applications.</P>
