Comparative study of fertilization rates of C57BL/6NKorl and C57BL/6N mice obtained from two other sources

        Woo Bin Yun,Hye Ryeong Kim,Ji Eun Kim,Jun Young Choi,Mi Rim Lee,Jin Ju Park,Bo Ram Song,Young Suk Jung,Hyun Keun Song,Joon Young Cho,Kil Soo Kim,Dae Youn Hwang 한국실험동물학회 2017 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.33 No.2

C57BL/6N is the most widely used inbred mouse strain applied in a wide variety of research areas including cancer, cardiovascular biology, developmental biology, diabetes and obesity, genetics, immunology, neurobiology, and sensorineural research. To compare the fertilization rates of C57BL/6NKorl mice with two commercial C57BL/6N stocks, differences in reproductive organ structures, sperm and egg numbers, fertilization rates, and embryo development rates among C57BL/6NKorl (Korea FDA source), C57BL/6NA (USA source), and C57BL/6NB (Japan source) mice were determined. Among the stocks, no significant differences were detected in organ weight and histological structure of male and female reproductive organs, although body weight was higher in C57BL/6NKorl mice than that in the other groups. The concentration and morphology of sperm and eggs in C57BL/6NKorl mice were similar to those of C57BL/6NA and C57BL/6NB mice. Furthermore, the three stocks had similar in vitro fertilization and embryo development rates, although these rates tended to be higher in C57BL/6NB mice. Pup body weight was higher in C57BL/6NKorl and C57BL/6NB mice than that in C57BL/6NA mice. The results of the present study suggest that C57BL/6NKorl, C57BL/6NA, and C57BL/6NB mice obtained from three different sources have similar fertilization and embryo development rates, although there were slight differences in the magnitude of their responses rates.

      • Record Effective Mobility Obtained From In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As Quantum-Well MOSFETs on 300-mm Si Substrate

        Seung-Woo Son,Jung Ho Park,Ji-Min Baek,Do-Kwyn Kim,Seung Ryul Lee,Sang-Moon Lee,Jieon Yoon,Jungtaek Kim,Woo-Bin Song,Sunjung Kim,Dong Suk Shin,Yihwan Kim,Seung Heon Shin,Tae-Woo Kim,Jung-Hee Lee,Dae-H IEEE 2017 IEEE electron device letters Vol.38 No.6

<P>In this letter, we have investigated the properties of In0.53Ga0.47As quantum-well (QW) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors (MOSFETs) on a 300-mm(100) Si wafer. We have explored the impact of scaling down In0.53Ga0.47As channel thickness (t(ch)) from 15 to 5 nm. The fabricated devices show excellent electrostatic integrity, such as subthreshold-swing (SS) < 80 mV/decade and drain-induced barrier-lower (DIBL) < 20 mV/V. Furthermore, we have extracted the effective mobility (mu(n_eff)) of the fabricated devices to investigate the carrier transport properties of the InGaAs MOSFETs with different values of t(ch). The device with t(ch) = 15 nm displayed a value of mu(n_eff) = 2, 190 cm(2)/V-s at room temperature. This value was found to decrease as tch was scaled down.</P>

공공 흡연장에서의 흡연 중 침 뱉기가 흡연장 주변 바닥의 미생물 오염도 변화와 미생물 확산에 미치는 영향

        양성우(Sung Woo Yang),여승현(Seung Hyeon Reo),김승준(Seung Jun Kim),조정욱(Jeong Wook Jo),최용근(Yong-Keun Choi),송학진(Hak Jin Song),오경빈(Kyung Bin Oh),이주연(Ju Yeon Lee),정윤석(Yunseok Jung),김형주(Hyung Joo Kim) 대한환경공학회 2021 대한환경공학회지 Vol.43 No.11

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spitting behavior on microbial public health in smoking areas. Through this investigation, bacterial concentration and spread of bacteria from the smoking areas were evaluated for the prospective public health and environment. Methods : The number of spitting and the spitting location in the smoking areas were measured visually by observers. For the microbial analysis, filter papers (5 × 5 cm) as sample collectors had been attached to the surface of the smoking areas for a given time. Using the collected filter paper, ATP bioluminescence measurement (RLU), colony forming unit (CFU) were measured. For the estimation of spitting behaviors in the smoking area on the spread microorganisms, saliva containing filters were selected from the areas, and fluorescent powder (0.01 g/㎠) was added to the papers. After 4 hours, the papers around the smoking areas were collected and the fluorescence activity was measured. Results and Discussion : The results showed that there was a clear relationship between the spitting behavior and the microbial activity in the smoking areas. In the case of sampling area A, the highest number of spitting was observed at the lunch hour (102 ± 16 times), and the RLU from the sample collected near the smoking area showed about 5,139 ± 1,267 RLU. When the RLU around the smoking area was measured, the lowest values were found at distance of 11 and 17 m from the cigarette bin (1,329 ± 148 and 1,204 ± 203 RLU), and it was confirmed that smoking and spitting did not occur at this sampling points. In the case of sampling area B, the highest number of spitting (45 ± 6 times) was observed at evening hour, and the RLU from the sample collected near the smoking area showed about 5,274 ± 1,297 RLU. The lowest value was in the sampling area B shown at 11 and 18 m (1,181 ± 243 RLU and 1,148 ± 168 RLU) from the cigarette bin, and it was also confirmed that smoking and spitting did not occur at this sampling points. The results indicate that the spitting during the smoking induced the increases of the microbial contamination of the public environment. The fluorescence powder diffusion analysis indicated that the saliva on the ground surface would enhance the spread of the microorganisms from the smoking area. Conclusions : Spitting in smoking areas can pose a high risk of microbial infection for smokers and non-smokers in smoking areas. Thus extensive and systematic attention related to the smoking manner must be paid to protect our public health.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation in Severely Ill Inpatients With COVID-19: A Cohort Study in a Tertiary Hospital

        Woo Hyeonseong,Lee Sanghee,Lee Hyun Sung,Chae Hyun Jun,Jung Jongtak,Song Myung Jin,Lim Sung Yoon,Lee Yeon Joo,Cho Young-Jae,Kim Eu Suk,Kim Hong Bin,Lim Jae-Young,Song Kyoung-Ho,Beom Jaewon 대한의학회 2022 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.37 No.34

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of comprehensive rehabilitation management on functional recovery and examine the correlation between clinical parameters and improvements in functional outcomes in severe-to-critical inpatients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a tertiary hospital. Methods: Post-acute COVID-19 patients who had a World Health Organization (WHO) ordinal scale of 5–7, underwent intensive care, and received comprehensive rehabilitation management, including exercise programs, nutritional support, dysphagia evaluation, and psychological care were included. The appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), Medical Research Council sum score, handgrip strength, number of repetitions in the 1-minute sit-to-stand test, gait speed, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Functional Ambulation Classification (FAC) were evaluated at hospital stay, discharge, and 1-month follow-up. The correlation between the rehabilitation dose and improvement in each outcome measure was analyzed. Results: Overall, 37 patients were enrolled, of whom 59.5% and 32.4% had a score of 6 and 7 on the WHO ordinal scale, respectively. Lengths of stay in the intensive care unit and hospital were 33.6 ± 23.9 and 63.8 ± 36.5 days. Outcome measures revealed significant improvements at discharge and 1-month follow-up. The SMI was significantly increased at the 1-month follow-up (6.13 [5.24–7.76]) compared with that during the hospital stay (5.80 [5.39–7.05]). We identified dose-response associations between the rehabilitation dose and FAC (ρ = 0.46) and BBS (ρ = 0.50) scores. Patients with older age, longer hospitalization, longer stay at the intensive care unit, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy, a more depressive mood, and poorer nutritional status revealed poorer improvement in gait speed at the 1-month follow-up. Conclusion: Comprehensive rehabilitation management effectively improved muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance in severe-to-critical COVID-19 patients. Dose-response relationship of rehabilitation and functional improvement emphasizes the importance of intensive post-acute inpatient rehabilitation in COVID-19 survivors.

Impact of Electric Vehicle Penetration-Based Charging Demand on Load Profile

        Woo-Jae Park,Kyung-Bin Song,Jung-Wook Park 대한전기학회 2013 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.8 No.2

This paper presents a study the change of the load profile on the power system by the charging impact of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020. The impact of charging EVs on the load demand is determined not only by the number of EVs in usage pattern, but also by the number of EVs being charged at once. The charging load is determined on an hourly basis using the number of the EVs based on different scenarios considering battery size, model, the use of vehicles, charging at home or work, and the method of charging, which is either fast or slow. Focusing on the impact of future load profile in Korea with EVs reaching up 10 and 20 percentage, increased power demand by EVs charging is analyzed. Also, this paper analyzes the impact of a time-of-use (TOU) tariff system on the charging of EVs in Korea. The results demonstrate how the penetration of EVs increases the load profile and decreases charging demand by TOU tariff system on the future power system.

Severity of grinder injuries and related factors compared with other high-rotation cutting tool injuries: a multicenter retrospective study from 2011 to 2018

        Song Juni,Jeon Yang Bin,Jang Jae Ho,Cho Jin-Seong,Choi Jae Yeon,Choi Woo Sung 대한외상학회 2023 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.36 No.1

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the characteristics of patients injured by high-rotation cutting tools and the factors related to the severity of their injuries. Methods: Adult patients (≥18 years), who presented to the emergency department (ED) after a high-rotation cutting tool injury and who were registered in the Korean Emergency Department-based Injury In-Depth Surveillance (2011–2018) database, were included. Patients’ demographic characteristics, injury-related factors, and Injury Severity Scores were collected. All included cases were categorized into two groups according to the tool that caused the injury: grinder versus nongrinder. The characteristics of the two groups were compared, and the factors associated with the severity of injuries were investigated. Results: Among 8,697 ED visits, 4,603 patients had been using a grinder and 4,094 had been using a nongrinder tool. The most frequently injured body part while using a grinder was the hand (46.4%), followed by the head (23.0%). While using a nongrinder tool, the most frequently injured body part was also the hand (64.0%), followed by the lower leg (11.4%). The odds of a severe injury were affected by patient age (odds ratio [OR], 1.024; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.020–1.028) and using a grinder (OR, 2.073; 95% CI, 1.877–2.290). The odds of a severe injury using a grinder were higher in arm injuries (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.40–1.83) and multiple-part injuries (OR, 1.998; 95% CI, 1.639–2.437). The odds of a severe injury using a grinder were lower for head injuries (OR, 0.481; 95% CI, 0.297–0.781).Conclusions: Injuries from grinders were more likely to affect the head and neck than nongrinder injuries, despite the lower severity. The current lack of regulations on grinders in occupational safety and health standards warrants relevant legislation and the development of applicable safety equipment.

      • Magnetic Field Stability of a Small YBCO Magnet in Persistent Current Mode

        Woo-Seok Kim,Chan Park,Sang Ho Park,Jikwang Lee,Jung-Bin Song,Haigun Lee,Hee-Gyoun Lee,Gye-Won Hong,Kyeongdal Choi IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.19 No.3

<P>It is well known that HTS (high temperature superconductor) is promising for magnet applications, but it has been almost impossible so far to apply them to magnets in persistent current mode because of poor qualities of their superconducting joints at higher current as well as their lower index values. To get rid of the non-superconducting joints from an HTS superconducting magnet, a wind-and-flip technique for demonstrating a persistent current mode operation of HTS magnet using YBCO coated conductors had been suggested. This paper presents experimental results of measured drift of a persistent current in the YBCO pancake coil which was made by using the wind-and-flip technique. The pancake coil was wound by YBCO coated conductor with a width of 12 mm, which was slit longitudinally at the center of the conductor along the conductor by a specially designed slitter. A stainless steel heater was attached on the one end of the YBCO conductor as a persistent current switch to energize the pancake coil. A temporal stability of the magnetic field was analyzed by monitoring the long-term drift of the magnetic field at 77.3 K by Hall sensors.</P>
