Determinants of the Probability of Ship Injuries

Wayne Talley 한국해운물류학회 2009 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.25 No.2

This study investigates determinants of the probability that an individual onboard a ship of a given shipping line will be injured (given that the ship is not involved in an accident). A Probit regression statistical model is used to investigate such determinants when ships are in port and on given types of containerships. Probit estimation results suggest that an individual is less likely to be injured in port onboard a ship that is larger in size and underway, but more likely to be injured if involved in a fall. An individual is less likely to be injured onboard a containership with AMO union officers if it is larger in size and during the daytime. An individual is less likely to be injured onboard a containership with MEBA and MMP union officers if it is larger in size, when the weather is clear and when he/she is wearing steel-toed safety boots.

IMMIGRATION AND IMPERIALISM: A NEW LOOK AT THE JAPANESE TAKEOVER OF KOREA

WAYNE PATTERSON 계명대학교 한국학연구원 2011 Acta Koreana Vol.14 No.1

While Japan’s perceptions of a security threat was the paramount reason for its takeover of Korea, a second reason surfaced that linked Korean emigration to Hawaii with a threat to Japan’s prestige as a leading nation in the world. Needing to prevent enactment of a Japanese Exclusion Act by the United States, the Japanese Foreign Office undertook to bring that emigration to a halt. Skillfully using missteps by the Korean government, Japan was able both to hide their ulterior motives from the United States and make it easier to absorb Korea’s diplomatic functions abroad, resulting in the establishment of the Protectorate in 1905.While Japan’s perceptions of a security threat was the aramount reason for its takeover of Korea, a second reason surfaced that linked Korean emigration to Hawaii with a threat to Japan’s prestige as a leading nation in the world. ‘I Only Hate Broccoli’: The Library as Place in 21st Century America

        Wayne A. Wiegand 한국문헌정보학회 2010 한국문헌정보학회지 Vol.44 No.4

By taking a bottom-up “library in the life of the user” perspective rather than a top-down “user in the life of the library” perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing “public sphere ” theory discussed in Jürgen Habermas’s THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of “library as place” from a user’s perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

Enhancing Inoculation in the Spiral of Silence to Promote Resistance to Attacks: Examining Public Opinion on Taiwan-PRC Relations

Wayne Wei Kuo Lin 충남대학교 아시아여론연구소 2022 Asian journal for public opinion research Vol.10 No.3

This study analyzes how inoculation affects the spiral of silence. Inoculation could be a beneficial tool in a democracy as it elevates citizens’ resistance to attitude change “forced” by “the winning opinion” in the spiral of silence on a certain controversial issue. The study examines essential variables combined with the theories of inoculation and spiral of silence, such as resistance to counter-attitudinal attack, fear of isolation, and issue-involvement. A two-wave field experiment was employed to assess the formation of public opinion on Taiwan’s political future with the People’s Republic of China. Results support that inoculation enhanced people’s resistance to attitude change and decreased their fear of isolation. Individuals who are more issue - involved were also shown to be more affected by inoculation, which allowed them to resist attitude change. The decreased fear of isolation, coupled with more issue -involvement, might elevate people’s willingness to speak out in public. More political discussions regarding an important public issue might be expected in a democracy.

Creating a Discourse for Understanding Second Language Acquisition and Anxiety

        Wayne Bottiger,김경열 한국중앙영어영문학회 2013 영어영문학연구 Vol.55 No.2

There has been a lengthy discussion concerning the idea that anxiety interferes with or diminishes the capacity for second language learning. Those included in the discussion are scholars, researchers, instructors, and L2 learners themselves. At issue is the question of how significant the influence of anxiety on inhibiting language learning really is. This article explores second language acquisition and discusses the implications related to ‘anxiety’. While the concept of anxiety is multi-faceted, the main area of interest for researchers and practitioners alike focuses on how anxiety actually influences language learning. Numerous types of anxiety have been identified including state anxiety, trait anxiety, situation-specific anxiety, and achievement anxiety just to name a few. Many have theorized that it is the wide variety of anxiety-types that is partly to blame for the mixed and confusing results of research done on this topic. Scovel (1978) states that anxiety is “not a simple, unitary construct that can be comfortably quantified into ‘high’ or ‘low’ amounts” (p. 137). Typically language anxiety or foreign language anxiety (FLA) is categorized as a situation-specific anxiety (Ellis, 1994), similar in type to other familiar manifestations of anxiety such as stage fright or test anxiety.

Use of SGLT-2 Inhibitors in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Abdominal Obesity: An Asian Perspective and Expert Recommendations

        Wayne Huey-Herng Sheu,Siew Pheng Chan,Bien J. Matawaran,Chaicharn Deerochanawong,Ambrish Mithal,Juliana Chan,Ketut Suastika,Chin Meng Khoo,Huu Man Nguyen,Ji Linong,Andrea Luk,윤건호 대한당뇨병학회 2020 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.44 No.1

The prevalence of obesity in Asia is of epidemic proportions, with an estimated 1 billion overweight/obese individuals in the region. The majority of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are overweight/obese, which increases the risk of cardiorenal outcomes in these patients; hence, sustained reductions in body weight and visceral adiposity are important management goals. However, most of the glucose-lowering therapies such as insulin, sulfonylureas, glinides, and thiazolidinediones induce weight gain, which makes the management of overweight/obese T2DM patients challenging. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are the only oral glucose-lowering agents that have been shown to reduce body weight and visceral adiposity. In addition, SGLT-2 inhibitors therapy reduces ectopic fat deposition and improves adipose tissue function and weight-related quality of life. In this article, we aim to consolidate the existing literature on the effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors in Asian patients with T2DM and to produce clinical recommendations on their use in overweight or obese patients with T2DM. Recommendations from international and regional guidelines, as well as published data from clinical trials in Asian populations and cardiovascular outcomes trials are reviewed. Based on the available data, SGLT-2 inhibitors represent an evidence-based therapeutic option for the management of overweight/obese patients with T2DM.

      • Printshops, Pressmen, and the Poetic Page in Colonial Korea

Wayne de Fremery 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2013 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.9

By analyzing the way vernacular Korean poetry of the 1920s was produced, this article initiates a study of the sociology of Korean literary production. Based on a survey of forty-five vernacular Korean books of poetry produced between 1921 and 1929, bank records, Japanese colonial government records, and printed interviews, the study describes the people, organizations, and technologies involved in the production of vernacular Korean poetry in the early twentieth century. It suggests that a small number of men in a few printing facilities working within restrained typographic conditions were responsible for printing the extant corpus of Korean vernacular poetry from the 1920s. An overview of the creative ways in which poetry was expressed visually and a discussion of the poem “Pandal” (Half moon), which appears differently in the two originary alternate issues of Kim So-wŏl’s canonical 1925 work Chindallaekkot (Azaleas), make it clear that an understanding of these people and organizations, as well as of the technologies they employed, should inform how we approach texts from this period hermeneutically.
