Adhesion and proliferation of NIH/3Т3 mouse fibroblasts on the surfaces of bacterial copolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and its mixture with poly(ethylene glycol) with differing crystallinity, surfaceenergy, and mean roughness was investigated. The surface mean roughness of all films on both sides, at the air interfaceand at the glass interface, measured by atomic force microscopy, was higher (from 17.0±1.4 nm to 290.8±7.0 nm)than that of the tissue culture polystyrene control (9.5±0.6 nm). The structure, surface energy, and chemical compositionof bacterial films were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, contact angle measurements, and Fouriertransform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. After 48 h, cell proliferation on all surfaces was significantly less than onthe control substrate; however, after 72 and 96 h, cell proliferation was comparable with control on some surfaceswith sufficient roughness. Addition of poly(ethylene glycol) resulted in an increase of adhesion and the metabolicactivity of the cells, even for relatively smooth surfaces. The complex correlation of cell metabolic activity with surfaceenergy and crystallinity for “rough” (mean roughness >100 nm) and “smooth” (mean roughness < 100 nm) surfacesis discussed.

Hypercholesterolaemia is one of the risk factors in coronary heart disease. Hence, this research was designed to investigate the effect of iru on cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolaemic rats. The fermented condiment iru was produced naturally and with starter cultures of Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus subtilis, and Leuconostoc sp.. The hypercholesterolaemic rats were fed a diet supplemented with iru for 28 days, and total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDL), and low density lipoproteins (LDL) were determined before and after feeding. Cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolaemic rats (100.80 mg/dL) were reduced to 56.99∼80.21 ㎎/dL after feeding with iru supplementation while rats not placed on the iru diet had cholesterol levels of 119 ㎎/dL. There were also significant reductions (P<0.05) in serum TG (78.77∼32.57 ㎎/dL) and LDL (28.43∼6.63 ㎎/dL) levels in rats fed the iru diet compared with the control (63.36 ㎎/dL). Higher and significantly different (P<0.05) HDL was found in rats fed with iru fermented with L. plantarum (44.01 ㎎/dL) while the least was found in the untreated group (28.93 ㎎/dL). The results from this study suggest that supplementing the diet with iru obtained by the fermentation of Parkia biglobosa seeds may significantly reduce cholesterol level in the blood stream.

For controllable generation of an isolated attosecond relativistic electron bunch [relativistic electron mirror (REM)] with nearly solid-state density, we proposed [V. V. Kulagin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 124801 (2007)] to use a solid nanofilm illuminated normally by an ultraintense femtosecond laser pulse having a sharp rising edge (nonadiabatic laser pulse). In this paper, the REM characteristics are investigated in a regular way for a wide range of parameters. With the help of two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, it is shown that, in spite of Coulomb forces, all of the electrons in the laser spot can be synchronously accelerated to ultrarelativistic velocities by the first half-cycle of the field, which has large enough amplitude. For the process of the REM generation, we also verify a self-consistent one-dimensional theory, which we developed earlier (cited above) and which takes into account Coulomb forces, radiation of the electrons, and laser amplitude depletion. This theory shows a good agreement with the results of the 2D PIC simulations. Finally, the scaling of the REM dynamical parameters with the field amplitude and the nanofilm thickness is analyzed.

Hypercholesterolaemia is one of the risk factors of coronary health in humans; hence this research was to investigate the effect of Parkia biglobosa seeds fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum on the cardiac risk factors of diet-induced hypercholesterolaemic Wistar rats. Hypercholesterolaemia in rats were experimentally induced and the hypercholesterolaemic Wistar rats were treated with iru samples. The total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), liver biomarkers and cardiac risks factors were determined after inducement and treatment with iru. Fourteen (14)-days after inducement, the rats in the group induced had the highest weight of 112.40 g while the control group had 94.30 g. The total cholesterol (TC) in the induced group was 100.80 mg/dl while the control had 51.40 mg/dl, triglyceride (TG) in the induced group was 111.75 mg/dl while the control group had 68.45 mg/dl. After 28 days of treatment, the group treated with fermented samples showed a reduction in the TC (100.80 to 56.99 mg/dl), Triglyceride (111.75 to 32.53 mg/dl), LDL (49.48 to 6.65 mg/dl), cardiac risk ratio (3.36 to 1.28), atherogenic coefficient (3.13-0.29) and atherogenic index (0.57 to 0.11). The result from this study reveals that fermented Parkia biglobosa sample reduced the cardiac risk of rats significantly.

Formation of relativistic electron mirrors in laser-plasma
Victor V. Kulagin,Hyyong Suk 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.44 No.52
The generation of relativistic electron mirrors (bunches with extremely short lengths) in laserplasma interactions is considered. It is shown that such a mirror can be generated by using an ultra-intense nonadiabatic laser pulse (pulse with a sharp rising edge) incident normally upon a thin plasma layer. Due to the relativistic contraction, the resulting length of the electron mirror can be considerably smaller than the initial thickness of the plasma layer. The lifetime of the relativistic mirror depends on the dimensionless amplitude and shape of the laser pulse, the initial density of electrons, and the thickness of the plasma layer. As a result, relativistic electron mirrors can survive during the rst several half-periods of an external electromagnetic eld, which can correspond to time intervals of hundreds of femtoseconds in the laboratory frame.

This paper presents a new model to obtain the minimum area of the contact surface for rectangular isolated footings, considering that the contact surface works partially to compression (a part of the contact surface of the footing is subjected to compression and the other is not in compression or tension). The methodology is developed by integration to obtain the axial load “P”, moment around the X axis “Mx” and moment around the Y axis “My”. This document presents the simplified and precise equations of the four possible cases of footing subjected to uniaxial bending and five possible cases of footing subjected to biaxial bending. The current model considers the contact area of the footing that works totally in compression, and other models consider the contact area that works partially under compression and these are developed by very complex iterative processes. Numerical examples are presented to obtain the minimum area of rectangular footings under an axial load and moments in two directions, and the results are compared with those of other authors. The results show that the new model presents smaller areas than the other authors presented.

This paper examines the port of Mombasa’s attempted implementation of computer-based terminal operating systems (TOS); the challenges faced and the outcomes. In addition to enhancing its operations efficiency, a key motivation for the technology was to facilitate better integration and connectivity to the Belt and Road as a key gateway along the key route. It utilised a qualitative single-case methodology, involving a combination of semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations and content analysis of relevant policy documents and reports provided by the port. The paper finds that the attempt to adopt and implement TOS at the port mostly failed as a result of a complex combination of technological, organisational and environmental factors. Most importantly, the wider business environment was ill equipped with the necessary information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure to support effective implementation. There was also a general lack of appropriately skilled workers to support and drive the same.
