        Assessment of Nutritional Quality of Wild and Cultivated Pleurotus sajor-caju

        The edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju, cultivated on corncobs and obtained from the wild, was assessed by nutritional indices. The protein efficiency ratios obtained for the rats fed stalk diet (2.16) and that of rats fed native P. sajor-caju cap diet (2.14) were not significantly different (P≥.05) from one another but were lower than the casein control (2.50), whereas the value for the wild cap diet-fed rats (2.99) was significantly higher (P≤.05) than the control. Net protein retention value obtained for rats fed cap diets was significantly higher (P≤.05) than the control, whereas the value for the stalk-fed rats was not significantly different (P≥.05) from the control. Biochemical parameters analyzed include serum albumin, total protein, and hemoglobin. Serum albumin concentrations of both the cultivated and wild cap diet-fed rats were not significantly different (P≥.05) from that of the control, whereas those of the two stalk diet-fed groups were significantly higher (P≤.05) than the control. Hemoglobin concentrations were significantly higher (P≤.05) in rats fed wild cap diet than in all other treatment groups. Serum total protein values of rats fed cultivated stalk and wild cap diets were significantly higher (P≤.05) in rats fed wild cap diet than in all other treatment groups. Total protein values of rats fed cultivated stalk and wild cap diets were significantly higher than those of other groups. The preceding highlights the importance of cultivated and native P. sajor-caju as sources of high-quality protein that could contribute to nutritional adequacy in human diets.

        A comparative study on the estimated glycemic index (eGI), phenolic constituents, antioxidative and potential antihyperglycemic effects of different parts of ripe Citrus paradisi fruit

        This study compared the estimated glycemic index, antioxidant, and α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties of ripe Citrus paradisi fruit’s parts, as well as their phenolic composition by employing high performance liquid chromatography fixed with diode array detector. The result revealed that C. paradisi fruit’s peel exhibited significantly lowest glycemic index, highest antioxidant and inhibitory effects on the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, with concomitant highest polyphenol constituents compared to other parts of the fruit. Thus, being a waste product of the fruit, it could be a prospective source of natural products for functional food development, nutraceuticals or dietary supplement for the management of diabetes, due to the low glycemic index, antioxidant and inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities.

        Gastroprotective and ulcer healing potentials of Nigerian Bee Propolis flavonoid extract on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in albino rats (Wistar Strains)

        Gastric ulcer is a serious global health challenge, and various natural products are being investigated to prevent and manage the condition. This study evaluated the gastroprotective and ulcer healing potentials of Nigerian bee propolis flavonoid-rich extract (NPE) on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in albino rats. Sixty adult male albino rats (222 ± 6.4 g) randomised into 5 groups (n = 12) were studied. Group A (SHAM) was left untreated, while gastric ulcer was induced in groups B (NPE), C (omeprazole) and D (saline). Group E (PRPE) was pre-treated with NPE prior to ulcer induction. The rate of ulcer contraction, volume and pH of gastric juice, and histopathological parameters were evaluated. The results showed a significantly higher rate of contraction (P = 0.001) between days 9 and 12 (NPE > OME > PRPE > SAL) and a significant decrease (P = 0.003) in the volume of gastric juice between days 9 and 12 (NPE < OME < PRPE). Gradual increase in pH was observed in all the groups from days 3 to 12, with a significantly higher rate (P < 0.001) between day 6 and 12 (SHAM > NPE > OME > PRPE > SAL). Histological evaluation showed significantly high neutrophils and macrophages on day 6 (P = 0.006) and lymphocytes (P = 0.004) between day 6 and 12 in the OME and NPE groups. NPE showed gastroprotective and ulcer healing properties by inhibiting ulcer formation and facilitating the curation of induced ulcers and is, therefore, a valuable alternative to conventional gastric ulcer therapy, especially in poor resource settings.

        Potentials of Kerstingiella geocarpa as a Health Food

        The seed of Kerstingiella geocarpa was analyzed to determine its proximate and amino acid compositions. The seed was found to be a high source of crude protein (21.3%) and very low in crude fat (1.0%). Arginine, an amino acid for pediatric growth, was the most concentrated amino acid in the seed. Arginine (9.3 g/100 g of crude protein), histidine (2.1 g/100 g of crude protein), and phenylalanine (3.2 g/100 g of crude protein) concentrations in the seed were found in higher levels than the recommended Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization amino acid requirement pattern for the preschool age group. The total essential amino acid content in K. geocarpa seed was 42.0%. The lysine:arginine ratio calculated to estimate the seed atherogenic potential was 0.3. This shows that K. geocarpa seed protein will not exert a hypercholesterolemia effect on the consumer. Furthermore, incorporation of the seed into diets of experimental rats resulted in hematological parameters comparable with those of casein control-fed rats. These findings show this seed could be an important source of food that holds promise in medicinal nutrition.

        'Iru' Fermented with Latobacillus plantarum Significantly Reduced Cardiovascular Risks in Hypercholesterolaemic Rats

        Hypercholesterolaemia is one of the risk factors of coronary health in humans; hence this research was to investigate the effect of Parkia biglobosa seeds fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum on the cardiac risk factors of diet-induced hypercholesterolaemic Wistar rats. Hypercholesterolaemia in rats were experimentally induced and the hypercholesterolaemic Wistar rats were treated with iru samples. The total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), liver biomarkers and cardiac risks factors were determined after inducement and treatment with iru. Fourteen (14)-days after inducement, the rats in the group induced had the highest weight of 112.40 g while the control group had 94.30 g. The total cholesterol (TC) in the induced group was 100.80 mg/dl while the control had 51.40 mg/dl, triglyceride (TG) in the induced group was 111.75 mg/dl while the control group had 68.45 mg/dl. After 28 days of treatment, the group treated with fermented samples showed a reduction in the TC (100.80 to 56.99 mg/dl), Triglyceride (111.75 to 32.53 mg/dl), LDL (49.48 to 6.65 mg/dl), cardiac risk ratio (3.36 to 1.28), atherogenic coefficient (3.13-0.29) and atherogenic index (0.57 to 0.11). The result from this study reveals that fermented Parkia biglobosa sample reduced the cardiac risk of rats significantly.

        Food Value and Safety Status of Raw (Unfermented) and Fermented Higher Basidiomycetes, Lenzites quercina (L) P. Karsten

        Food value and safety of a wild macrofungus, Lenzites quercina were investigated. The proximate and mineral composition of raw and fermented L. quercina were assessed using standard methods. Brine shrimp lethality bioassay was adopted for assessment of the toxicological property of the extracts obtained from raw and fermented L. quercina. The result of proximate composition revealed higher protein content (26.15%) in fermented L. quercina, while the value of carbohydrate (38.3%), crude fibre (27.6%), and ash contents (6.5%) were higher (P<0.05) in raw L. quercina when compared to fermented L. quercina. The macro and micro elements in the raw and fermented L. quercina were in decreasing order of Ca> K> Zn> Fe> Na> Mg> Pb> Cu with values ranging from 4.04 mg/g to 721.6 mg/g. The amino acids in raw and fermented L. quercina ranged from 0.05 mg/g to 23.78 mg/g, while the fatty acids ranged from 0.11% to 38.5%. The mortality rate of the Artemia salina against the extracts was from 8.0% to 38.0% with lethal dose at 50% of population within 49.11 and 250.50 g/mL. The results from this study revealed that L. quercina possesses essential amino acids, fatty acids, and substantial micro elements, which may be useful in the formulation of functional foods and nutraceuticals.

        Local Condiment, Iru, Obtained from the Fermentation of Parkia biglobosa Seed Substantially Reduced the Serum Cholesterol Level of Wister Rats

        Hypercholesterolaemia is one of the risk factors in coronary heart disease. Hence, this research was designed to investigate the effect of iru on cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolaemic rats. The fermented condiment iru was produced naturally and with starter cultures of Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus subtilis, and Leuconostoc sp.. The hypercholesterolaemic rats were fed a diet supplemented with iru for 28 days, and total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDL), and low density lipoproteins (LDL) were determined before and after feeding. Cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolaemic rats (100.80 mg/dL) were reduced to 56.99∼80.21 ㎎/dL after feeding with iru supplementation while rats not placed on the iru diet had cholesterol levels of 119 ㎎/dL. There were also significant reductions (P<0.05) in serum TG (78.77∼32.57 ㎎/dL) and LDL (28.43∼6.63 ㎎/dL) levels in rats fed the iru diet compared with the control (63.36 ㎎/dL). Higher and significantly different (P<0.05) HDL was found in rats fed with iru fermented with L. plantarum (44.01 ㎎/dL) while the least was found in the untreated group (28.93 ㎎/dL). The results from this study suggest that supplementing the diet with iru obtained by the fermentation of Parkia biglobosa seeds may significantly reduce cholesterol level in the blood stream.

        Prognostic Value in Preoperative Veterans RAND-12 Mental Component Score on Clinical Outcomes for Patients Undergoing Minimally Invasive Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion

        Objective: To evaluate the effect of Veterans RAND 12-item health survey mental composite score (VR-12 MCS) on postoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion. Methods: Retrospective data from a single-surgeon database created 2 cohorts: patients with VR-12 MCS ≥ 50 or VR-12 MCS < 50. Preoperative, 6-week, and final follow-up (FF)- PROMs including VR-12 MCS/physical composite score (PCS), 12-item Short Form health survey (SF-12) MCS/PCS, Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Function (PROMIS-PF), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), visual analogue scale (VAS)-back/leg pain (VAS-BP/LP), and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were collected. ∆6-week and ∆FF-PROMs were calculated. Minimal clinically important difference (MCID) achievement rates were determined from established cutoffs from the literature. For intercohort comparison, chi-square analysis was used for categorical variables, and Student t-test for continuous variables. Results: Seventy-nine patients were included; 25 were in VR-12 MCS < 50. Mean postoperative follow-up time was 17.12 ± 8.43 months. The VR-12 MCS < 50 cohort had worse VR-12 PCS, SF-12 MCS, PROMIS-PF, PHQ-9, VAS-BP, and ODI scores preoperatively (p ≤ 0.014, all), worse VR-12 MCS/PCS, SF-12 MCS, PROMIS-PF, PHQ-9, and ODI scores at 6-week postoperatively (p ≤ 0.039, all), and worse VR-12 MCS, SF-12 MCS, PROMIS-PF, PHQ-9, VAS-BP, VAS-LP, and ODI scores at FF (p ≤ 0.046, all). The VR-12 MCS < 50 cohort showed greater improvement in VR-12 MCS and SF-12 MCS scores at 6 weeks and FF (p ≤ 0.005, all). The VR-12 MCS < 50 cohort experienced greater MCID achievement for VR-12 MCS, SF-12 MCS, and PHQ-9 (p ≤ 0.006, all). Conclusion: VR-12 MCS < 50 yielded worse mental health, physical function, pain and disability postoperatively, yet reported greater improvements in magnitude and MCID achievement for mental health.
