The branching patterns and termination points of the facial artery: a cadaveric anatomical study

Vu Hoang Nguyen,Lin Cheng-Kuan,Tuan Anh Nguyen,Trang Huu Ngoc Thao Cai 대한두개안면성형외과학회 2024 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.25 No.2

Background: The facial artery is an important blood vessel responsible for supplying the anterior face. Understanding the branching patterns of the facial artery plays a crucial role in various medical specialties such as plastic surgery, dermatology, and oncology. This knowledge contributes to improving the success rate of facial reconstruction and aesthetic procedures. However, debate continues regarding the classification of facial artery branching patterns in the existing literature. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive anatomical study, in which we dissected 102 facial arteries from 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers at the Anatomy Department, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Results: Our investigation revealed eight distinct termination points and identified 35 combinations of branching patterns, including seven arterial branching patterns. These termination points included the inferior labial artery, superior labial artery, inferior alar artery, lateral nasal artery, angular artery typical, angular artery running along the lower border of the orbicularis oculi muscle, forehead branch, duplex, and short course (hypoplastic). Notably, the branching patterns of the facial artery displayed marked asymmetry between the left and right sides within the same cadaver. Conclusion: The considerable variation observed in the branching pattern and termination points of the facial artery makes it challenging to establish a definitive classification system for this vessel. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an anatomical map summarizing the major measurements and geometric features of the facial artery. Surgeons and medical professionals involved in facial surgery and procedures must consider the detailed anatomy and relative positioning of the facial artery to minimize the risk of unexpected complications.

Photocatalytic removal of Rhodamine B in water using g-C3N4/MIL-53(Fe) material under LED visible light with persulfate activation

Nguyen Trung Dung,Nguyen Van Hiep,Manh B. Nguyen,Vu Dinh Thao,Nguyen Nhat Huy 한국화학공학회 2021 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.38 No.10

Photocatalysis is usually considered as one of the most effective methods for treating non-biodegradable pollutants commonly found in textile wastewater. In this study, the photocatalyst of g-C3N4/MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied for the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The photocatalytic material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the g-C3N4 doped MIL-53(Fe) with 97 wt% of MIL- 53(Fe) works effectively under visible light and the presence of oxidants (Na2S2O8). RhB removal efficiency can be more than 99% with 20mg/L of RhB, 300mg/L of catalyst, 200mg/L of Na2S2O8, and pH 3. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB with g-C3N4/MIL-53(Fe) was also proposed, which could be improved and studied for a wide range of applications in textile wastewater treatment.

      • A novel coupled finite element method for hydroelastic analysis of FG-CNTRC floating plates under moving loads

        Vu X. Nguyen,Qui X. Lieu,Tuan A. Le,Thao D. Nguyen,Takayuki Suzuki,Van Hai Luong 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.42 No.2

A coupled finite element method (FEM)-boundary element method (BEM) for analyzing the hydroelastic response of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) floating plates under moving loads is firstly introduced in this article. For that aim, the plate displacement field is described utilizing a generalized shear deformation theory (GSDT)-based FEM, meanwhile the linear water-wave theory (LWWT)-relied BEM is employed for the fluid hydrodynamic modeling. Both computational domains of the plate and fluid are coincidentally discretized into 4-node Hermite elements. Accordingly, the C1−continuous plate element model can be simply captured owing to the inherent feature of third-order Hermite polynomials. In addition, this model is also completely free from shear correction factors, although the shear deformation effects are still taken into account. While the fluid BEM can easily handle the free surface with a lower computational effort due to its boundary integral performance. Material properties through the plate thickness follow four specific CNT distributions. Outcomes gained by the present FEM-BEM are compared with those of previously released papers including analytical solutions and experimental data to validate its reliability. In addition, the influences of CNT volume fraction, different CNT configurations, water depth, and load speed on the hydroelastic behavior of FG-CNTRC plates are also examined.

Adjustment of Modified Carbapenem Inactivation Method Conditions for Rapid Detection of Carbapenemase-Producing Acinetobacter baumannii

        Thao Nguyen Vu,Jung-Hyun Byun,Roshan D’Souza,Naina Adren Pinto,Le Phuong Nguyen,DongeunYong,Yunsop Chong 대한진단검사의학회 2020 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.40 No.1

Background: The existing modified carbapenem inactivation methods (mCIMs) recommended by the CLSI for detecting carbapenemase production have not been applicable for Acinetobacter baumannii. We evaluated the influence of matrices used in mCIMs and CIMTris on the stability of the disks for detecting carbapenemase producers and suggested optimal mCIM conditions for detecting carbapenemase-producing A. baumannii. Methods: Seventy-three A. baumannii isolates characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility and carbapenemase encoding genes were tested for carbapenemase production using mCIM and CIMTris. The influence of the matrices (Tryptic soy broth [TSB] and Tris-HCl) used in these methods on the stability of the meropenem (MEM) disk was also evaluated. The mCIM conditions were adjusted to enhance screening sensitivity and specificity for detecting carbapenemase-producing A. baumannii. Results: The matrices had an impact on the stability of the MEM disk after the incubation period (two or four hrs). TSB nutrient broth is an appropriate matrix for mCIM compared with Tris-HCl pH 7.6, which leads to the loss of MEM activity in CIMTris. The sensitivity and the specificity of the optimal mCIM were both 100%. Conclusions: We established optimal mCIM conditions for simple, accurate, and reproducible detection of carbapenemase-producing A. baumannii.

Facial artery: anatomical variations in the perioral region in cadavers

Vu Hoang Nguyen,Lin Cheng-Kuan,Tuan Anh Nguyen,Trang Huu Ngoc Thao Cai Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association 2023 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.24 No.6

Background: In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of perioral vascular complications resulting from filler injections, such as necrosis of the lip or alar rim, occlusion, and in severe cases, blindness. Conversely, the use of perioral arterial flaps is becoming more prevalent in the treatment of cleft lips, cancer, and trauma. A thorough understanding of perioral arteries is essential to minimize complications and maximize the success of these flaps. However, the course of the facial artery (FA) in the perioral region remains incompletely understood. The aim of this study was to describe the variations of the FA in the perioral region. Methods: We dissected 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers. We then studied the size and distribution of perioral arteries in 102 specimens. Results: The superior labial artery (SLA) was the most common branch, occurring in 87.25% of cadavers, followed by the inferior labial artery (ILA) at 78.43%. The SLA primarily originated above the mouth corner (cheilion), accounting for 91.01% of cases, and predominantly exhibited a tortuous course within the submucosa (78.65%). The ILA's branching pattern varied, but it was primarily located below the cheilion (91.25%). The ILA also followed a twisted path, generally within the submucosa. The ILA exhibited two patterns: the typical pattern, distributed at the vermilion border of the lower lip (8.82%), and the horizontal labiomental artery pattern, which ran horizontally in the middle of the lower lip area (69.61%). At their origin, the SLA and ILA had average external diameters of 1.29 mm and 1.28 mm, respectively. Conclusion: Numerous anatomical variations in the FA in the perioral region were found. A detailed anatomic description, suggested landmarks, and angiography before the procedure will be useful to help doctors avoid complications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hydrotalcite/Graphene Oxide Containing Benzoate for Corrosion Protection of Carbon Steel

( Thuy Duong Nguyen ),( Boi An Tran ),( Ke Oanh Vu ),( Anh Son Nguyen ),( Anh Truc Trinh ),( Gia Vu Pham ),( Thi Xuan Hang To ),( Thanh Thao Phan ) 한국부식방식학회(구 한국부식학회) 2020 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.19 No.2

This work examined the corrosion protection performance of benzoate loaded hydrotalcite/graphene oxide (HT/GO-BZ) for carbon steel. HT/GO-BZ was fabricated by the co-precipitation method and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy. The corrosion inhibition action of HT/GO-BZ on carbon steel in 0.1 M NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical measurements. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Subsequently, the effect of HT/GO-BZ on the corrosion resistance of the water-based epoxy coating was investigated by the salt spray test. The obtained results demonstrated the intercalation of benzoate and GO in the hydrotalcite structure. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was about 16%. The polarization curves of the carbon steel electrode revealed anodic corrosion inhibition activity of HT/GO-BZ and the inhibition efficiency was about 95.2% at a concentration of 3g/L. The GO present in HT/GO-BZ enhanced the inhibition effect of HT-BZ. The presence of HT/GO-BZ improved the corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating.
