Expression of Tight Junction Molecule In The Human Serum-Induced Aggregation of Human Abdominal Adipose-Derived Stem Cells In Vitro

        A Young Yoon,Sujin Yun,HyeJin Yang,Yoon Hwa Lim,Haekwon Kim Vol.18 No.4

Previously we have shown that human abdominal adipose derived-stem cells (ADSCs) could aggregate during the high-density culture in the presence of human serum (HS). In the present study, we observed that human cord blood serum (CBS) and follicular fluid (HFF) also induced aggregation. Similarly, porcine serum could induce aggregation whereas bovine and sheep sera induced little aggregation. qRT-PCR analyses demonstrated that, compared to FBS-cultured ADSCs, HScultured cells exhibited higher level of mRNA expression of CLDN3, -6, -7, -15, and -16 genes among the tight junction proteins. ADSCs examined at the time of aggregation by culture with HS, BSA, HFF, CBS, or porcine serum showed significantly higher level of mRNA expression of JAM2 among JAM family members. In contrast, cells cultured in FBS, bovine serum or sheep serum, showed lower level of JAM2 expression. Immunocytochemical analyses demonstrated that the aggregates of HS-cultured cells (HS-Agg) showed intense staining against the anti-JAM2 antibody whereas neither nonaggregated cells (HS-Ex) nor FBS-cultured cells exhibited weak staining. Western blot results showed that HS-Agg expressed JAM2 protein more prominently than HS-Ex and FBS-cultured cells, both of latter reveled weaker intensity. These results suggest that the aggregation property of ADSCs during high-density culture would be dependent on the specific components of serum, and that JAM2 molecule could play a role in the animal sera-induced aggregation in vitro.

Useful Insights for Refugee Student Education: Experiences of Young North Korean Refugees at Christian Alternative Schools in South Korea

2020 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.37

This study explores experiences of North Korean refugee students at Christian alternative schools in South Korea. The participants in this study were twelve young people aged 17-27, who were current or recent students of three Christian alternative schools established for young North Korean refugees. The young people’s experiences were gathered using one-to-one interviews. A thematic approach was used to analyses the data. These young people saw the schools as helpful for their integration into South Korean society, and this aspect should be valued appropriately. However, they were frustrated by the lack of opportunities to mingle with South Korean peers and by feelings limited freedom within the school settings. Despite their vulnerabilities as refugees, these young people tried to manage and overcome adversities that they faced in their own ways. This paper concludes by suggesting improved practices that schools may apply to more effectively help students from refugee backgrounds achieve successful integration into a new society.

Photoreflectance study on the photovoltaic effect in InAs/GaAs quantum dot solar cell

        Yoon, Sujin,Lee, Seung Hyun,Shin, Jae Cheol,Kim, Jong Su,Lee, Sang Jun,Leem, Jae-Young,Krishna, Sanjay Elsevier 2018 Current Applied Physics Vol.18 No.6

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>To investigate the effect of quantum dot (QD) layers on the photovoltaic process of InAs/GaAs QD solar cell (QDSC), QD layers were embedded in conventional GaAs p-n junction SC (GaAs SC) structures. The photoreflectance (PR) was examined at different temperatures (<B> <I>T</I> </B>) and excitation light intensities (<B> <I>I</I> </B> <B> <I>ex</I> </B> ) to investigate the photovoltaic effects through observation of the Franz-Keldysh oscillations (FKOs) in the PR spectra. The evaluated the p-n junction electric fields (<B> <I>F</I> </B> <B> <I>pn</I> </B> ) of the InAs QDSC was different from that of the GaAs SC. Moreover, InAs QDSC show that the different photovoltaic behaviors compared with GaAs SC by varying <B> <I>I</I> </B> <B> <I>ex</I> </B> and <B> <I>T</I> </B>. From these considerations, we suggest that the different photovoltaic behaviors are caused by the effect of the additional photo-carrier generation in InAs QD layers resulting in enhancement of the field screening effect in <B> <I>F</I> </B> <B> <I>pn</I> </B> .</P>

Vol.0 No.64

Social innovation education aims at nurturing human resources who help to realize social value, and it is currently drawing more attention as a key strategy of innovation in higher education. However, there has been limited discussion and study on the subject. The purpose of this study is to examine the direction in which social innovation education is implemented in Christian universities by exploring the views of university students majoring in Christianity at a women’s university in Seoul, Korea and their experiences of international volunteering activities. Nine female students in the department of Christian Studies at a female university in Seoul, participated in the study after they completed volunteering activities in the village of Chandrabhan, India. Data were collected from the participants’ reflection journals, activity reports, and a final discussion about their work after the final activity, and they were then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The main findings show that students set out with the goal of helping the children of Chandrabhan to develop future plans. In the meantime, through their participation in the volunteering activities, students learned the necessity and importance of co-working and the understanding of differences and empathy. Students also had the opportunity to experience a high level of participation by leading the entire process and making decisions about their activities. For better practice, students considered what the ultimate aim of their activities was, between social change and mission work, and about how they could improve the sustainability and effectiveness of the voluntary work done in India. This paper was limited in conducting in-depth analysis of the perspectives and experiences of participants because it is dependent on textual data. However, it provides meaningful information and insight about the practice of social innovation education in Christian universities by offering a starting point for further discussion based on the actual opinions of volunteers.

Vol.65 No.4

The spiral of silence phenomenon has often been attributed to the effects of mass media. The emergence of networked environments, such as social media, however, makes the spiraling dynamics far more complex and unpredictable than before. While being silent was previously taken as a sign of compliance resulting from the fear of social isolation, social media users may feel reluctant to speak out or may intentionally choose to remain silent for various reasons and purposes. Particularly in social media, individuals may not want to express their opinions for different reasons, such as lurking (i.e., read messages and others’ post, but seldom write themselves) or as an implicit expression of disagreement. This suggests that silence may not be attributed to a single psychological motive or reason, but arises from a mixture of motivational and situational influences in the social media environment. The aim of this study is to re-illuminate the concept of silence as a conscious choice that individuals make in a given situation, by examining the factors that influence three different types of silence—namely acquiescent, defensive, and prosocial silence—in the context of public opinion processes in social media. An online survey was administered to selected Facebook users and a MANOVA (multivariate analysis of variance) was carried out to analyze the data obtained. First, the degrees of acquiescent and defensive silence in the social media environment were found to increase when the level of communication apprehension was higher, while the degree of prosocial silence varied depending on the interaction between communication apprehension and perceived opinion climate. When communication apprehension was lower, the degree of prosocial silence turned out higher among people in the majority. When communication apprehension was higher, on the contrary, prosocial silence went up among those in the minority. Similar patterns were also found in relation to self-control—the degree of prosocial silence went up when people with higher self-control were in the minority and those with lower self-control in the majority. Likewise, group identity was found to moderate the effects of perceived opinion climates on the degree of defensive silence. Overall, the results show that there exist different types of silence with various underlying reasons, which are in conjunction with diverse socio-psychological, situational, and contextual factors related to public opinion processes. The presence of different types of silence can make the unfolding of public opinion more dynamic and unpredictable, which requires a systematic attempt to identify them.
