Prolonged high-fat diet leads to the development of obesity and multiple comorbidities including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), but the underlying molecular basis is not fully understood. We combine molecular networks and time course gene expression profiles to reveal the dynamic changes in molecular networks underlying diet-induced obesity and NASH. We also identify hub genes associated with the development of NASH. Core diet-induced obesity networks were constructed using Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) based on 332 high-fat diet responsive genes identified in liver by time course microarray analysis (8 time points over 24?weeks) of high-fat diet-fed mice compared to normal diet-fed mice. IPA identified five core diet-induced obesity networks with time-dependent gene expression changes in liver. These networks were associated with cell-to-cell signaling and interaction (Network 1), lipid metabolism (Network 2), hepatic system disease (Network 3 and 5), and inflammatory response (Network 4). When we merged these core diet-induced obesity networks, Tlr2, Cd14, and Ccnd1 emerged as hub genes associated with both liver steatosis and inflammation and were altered in a time-dependent manner. Further, protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed Tlr2, Cd14, and Ccnd1 were interrelated through the ErbB/insulin signaling pathway. Dynamic changes occur in molecular networks underlying diet-induced obesity. Tlr2, Cd14, and Ccnd1 appear to be hub genes integrating molecular interactions associated with the development of NASH. Therapeutics targeting hub genes and core diet-induced obesity networks may help ameliorate diet-induced obesity and NASH.

Shape Memory Effect and Superelasticity of an Equiatomic Ti-Ni Alloy with Surface Sulfide Layers
Nam, Tae Hyun,Hur, Shin Goo,Lee, Jae Hwa,Cho, Gyu Bong Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2006 Materials science forum Vol.510 No.-

Shape memory characteristics and superelasticity of an equiatomic Ti-Ni alloy with surface sulfide layers were investigated by means of thermal cycling tests under constant load, tensile tests, and scanning electron microscopy. Martensitic transformation start temperature (Ms) increased by sulfidation, which is ascribed to a compressive stress imposed by surface sulfide layers. Surface sulfide layers were found to make transformation elongation be small when their thickness was less than 5 ㎛. This is ascribed to the fact that the surface sulfide layers were not detached from substrates and constrained martensitic transformation. When thickness of the surface sulfide layers was 35 ㎛, transformation elongation was not affected by them because they were detached during transformation. Superelastic recovery decreased by the sulfide layers when their thickness was about 5 ㎛, while it did not change when the thickness was about 35 ㎛.

Nanocrystallization of a Ti–50.0Ni(at.%) alloy by cold working and stress/strain behavior
Kim, Yeon-ho,Cho, Gyu-bong,Hur, Shin-goo,Jeong, Sang-sik,Nam, Tae-hyun Elsevier 2006 Materials science & engineering. properties, micro Vol.438 No.-

Abstract

Solid state amorphization, crystallization and mechanical properties of an equiatomic Ti–Ni alloy have been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, thermal cycling tests under constant load and tensile tests. Amorphous phases had domain like shape in the 40% cold rolled alloy, while they had mainly wide band shape in the 70% cold rolled alloy. Crystallization temperature decreased from 552 to 539K with increasing the amount of cold rolling from 40 to 70%. The average grain size of the 40% cold rolled alloy increased from 27 to 80nm with increasing annealing temperature from 523 to 673K. The hysteresis increased rapidly with raising annealing temperature, which was ascribed to an increase in the average grain size.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and depressive symptom in Korean women. METHODS: The participants of the study was women aged 20-64 yr (n=639) who participated in the 2014 Korea Institute of Sports Science Fitness (KISS Fit) study. Maximal oxygen uptake was measured using a maximal graded exercise testing. Depressive symptom was assessed using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The participants were classified as low, intermediate and high fitness levels. Logistic regression models were used to test the association between fitness and depressive symptom. RESULTS: The prevalence of the depressive symptom defined by BDI score in this study was 13.4%. Fitness levels were significantly reduced in the participants with the depressive symptom (p=.002) compared to the ones without the depressive symptom. After controlling for age, body mass index, and house income, participants with low fitness level showed higher level of depressive symptom than the ones with medium and high fitness level (p<.001). Women with intermediate and high fitness level had 60% and 62% lower odds for depressive symptom, respectively, than the ones with low fitness level after adjustment for age, hypertension, dyslipidemia, heart disease, alcohol intake, smoking, body mass index, percent body fat, physical activity level and income. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that fitness is independently associated with the depressive symptom in women. Cardiorespiratory fitness might be utilized as an important component to prevent depressive symptom in women.

In our research, Ti-Ni and Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders were fabricated by mechanical alloying, and then phase transformation behaviours were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The size of the Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders decreased as Cu-content increased. The powders of as-milled Ti-Ni and Ti-Ni-Cu alloys with Cucontents less than Sat.% were amorphous, whereas those of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys with Cu-content more than l0at.% were crystalline. These characteristics indicate that Cu addition tends to suppress amorphization of Ti-Ni based alloy powders. The monoclinic B19' martensite is formed in the Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders with Cu-content less than 10 at.%, whereas the orthorhombic B19 martensite is formed in the Yi-Ni-Cu alloy powders Cu-content more than 10 at.%. The Fe contamination is reduced by decreasing rotation speed from 350 rpm to 250 rpm.
