        Catalytic characteristics of Ni(B)‑coated YSZ powder by neutral electroless plating

        In this study, an eco-friendly, electroless, and neutral (pH 7.0) process of nickel plating at low temperature (40 °C) was used to develop an anode catalyst for a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Electroless Ni(B) plating on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles resulted in the formation of a Ni(B)/YSZ core–shell. We examined the crystallinity and uniformity of the Ni(B) layer on the plated core–shell powder and found that it had an amorphous-like structure. In addition, we evaluated the rate of carbon deposition and characteristics of the SOFC anode catalyst: the carbon deposition rate was 19.42%, H2 selectivity was nearly 88% at 800 °C, and methane conversion was maintained at 100% at temperatures above 850 °C. It was ascertained that in the high-temperature region, which is the main operating temperature of SOFCs, the amorphous-like microstructure of the Ni(B) layer on the Ni(B)–YSZ core–shell powder played an important role in enhancing these properties.

      • 프로스타글란딘 E₁ 마이크로에멀젼이 함유된 액상좌제의 제조 및 평가

        The purpose of this study is to develop a transurethral liquid suppository containing prostaglandin E_(1)(PGE_(1))-loaded microemulsion, which undergoes a phase transition to gels at body temperature. The effects of oils, ethanol as solvent and HCI as pH-controlling agent on the physicochemical properties of liquid suppositories composed of poloxamer P 407. P 188 and carbopol was investigated. The stability of PGE_(1) and release of PGE_(1) from liquid suppository were evaluated. Oils such as Neobee and soybean oil significantly decreased the gelation temperature but increased the gel strength of liquid suppository due to their strongly binding with the components of liquid suppository base. However, ethanol slightly did the opposite. The pH of liquid suppositories hardly affected the gelation temperature and gel strength due to addition of very small HCI(0.005-0.01%). A liquid suppository [PGE_(1)/P 407/P 188/carbopol/Neobee/ethanol/HCI(0.4/14/14/0.4/7/2/0.005%)], which had the gelation temperature (34.2±0.6℃) and gel strength (31.35±4.37 sec) suitable for liquid sup-pository system, was easily administered and not leak out from the body. About 60% of PGE_(1) was released out within 2h from this formulation. It was shown that the release of PGE_(1) was proportional to the square root of time, indicating that PGE_(1) might be released from the suppository by Fickian diffusion. It was stable at 4℃ for at least 2months. The results suggest that transurethral liquid suppository containing prostaglandin E_(1)-loaded microemulsion is thought to be a con-venient, safe and effective dosage form for PGE_(1). However, it should be further developed as a more convenient and stable dosage form for PGE_(1).

        Effect of Supplementation of Trehalose, Glycerol on Conventional Freezing and Vitrification of Boar Sperm

        The boar sperm has more lipid droplets and specialty of seminal plasma compared with other species, causing difficulties of freezing sperm and decreases for the utilization of frozen semen into the artificial insemination. However, several studies reported significant results for the recovery of sperm motility and reproductive by addition of cryoprotectants and seminal plasma after thawing. This study was designed to investigate the effects of supplementation of trehalose or glycerol in the LEY (lactose and egg yolk in BTS) solution for the conventional freezing and vitrification process. Two boars aged 16 months were used to collect semen for 2 times in a week. The samples were allotted to 3 freezing solutions (LEY + glycerol 10.5% + OEP 1.5%, LEY + trehalose 1M + OEP 1.5%, and sucrose 1.5M + trehalose 1 M + OEP 1.5%) after centrifugation at 800 g for 10 minutes. Semen was equilibrated in freezing solutions for 10 minutes and injected into plastic straws with 2∼3 air bubbles to minimize freezing damages. Vitrification was performed to locate sperm in 5 cm above LN2 for 5 minutes, and the conventional freezing was conducted with an automatic freezer. Motility and survival rates were measured by CASA (Computer assisted sperm an alyzing system) and FITC (Fluorescein isothiocyanate), respectively after thawing semen at 50℃ for 12 seconds. The results were analyzed by ANOVA with STATVIEW statistical program. The vitrificatioin solution (LEY + 10.5% glycerol + 1.5% OEP) presented higher motility (20.9%) than other solutions while the solution (LEY + 1M trehalose + 1.5% OEP) showed the lowest (motility : 5.2%). However, survival rates of vitrified sperms detected by FITC showed 1~4% live sperms in almost of dead sperms at all vitrification solutions’ groups, but survival rate of freezing solution of LEY + 1M trehalose + 1.5% OEP LEY and LEY + 10.5% glycerol + 1.5% OEP were showed 49%, and 79%, respectively. There were differences (P<0.05) survival rate of conventional freezing in LEY + 10.5% glycerol + 1.5% OEP and LEY + 1M trehalose + 1.5% OEP and the remaining showed no differences. The results suggested that vitrified boar semen was not enough to be utilized for the artificial insemination, but it showed possibility to utilize for ICSI and conventional freezing with glycerol would be useful method for artificial insemination in pig while we choose the outstanding semen against tolerance to freezing damages.

        Hormonal Changes of Serum Progesterone and Estradiol-$17{\beta}$ on Flushing Feed before Estrus during Estrous Cycle in Sows of Landrace, Yorkshire and $F_1$ (Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire)

        This study was conducted to investigate the changes of hormone levels of serum progesterone (P4) and estradiol-$17{\beta}$ (E2) in sows of Landrace (L), Yorkshire (Y) and F1 (L ${\times}$ Y) (respectively n=3) with excellent ability, and to provide a baseline data for improving reproductive performance. In this experiment, the sows at the age of 12 months or more were used. The sows were fed by two way methods, one is conventional methods and the other is 3 days-flushing feed before estrus. Each pig's blood was collected in 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 days after the estrus for the analyses of P4 and E2. Serum was separated by centrifugation for 15 min. with 3,000 rpm. Progesterone and estradiol-$17{\beta}$ were measured by immunochemical assay (ELIZA test). In conventional feeding, serum progesterone levels were significantly (p<0.01) higher in F1 than in L and Y. No significant differences in P4 concentrations were seen between the L and Y of sows. Serum E2 levels were similar the serum progesterone levels. In the case of flushing feed, the tendency of hormonal changes were similar to conventional methods. But almost of hormonal levels were a little higher than that of conventional methods. P4 level of L and Y in flushing feed were significantly different (p<0.01). Serum E2 level of Y in flushing feed was significantly different among the breeds (p<0.01). These results were similar to the tendency of hormonal changes in general sows and moreover, flushing feed is known to develop the swine production, these results proved the fact of the methods. And these results suggested that more studies about hormonal changes in sows according to seasonal and nutritional factors should be needed.

        Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease characterized by development of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus, causing pain and infertility. This guideline will provide evidence based information concerning diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis. Constructive dialogue should allow patients to be able to trust the advice given by their practitioner as they will be confident that they have and will be able to use this guideline to inform this decision-making process. This guideline has been developed with the aim of providing guidance on endometriosis. The effectiveness of the various treatments as well as their risks and benefi ts are discussed in relation to their use in the treatment of endometriosis. We wish the information contained in this guideline will help clinicians reach a reasonable and beneficial decision with the up-to-date information.

      • Isolation and Characterization of Chlorinated Aromatic Hydrocarbon 2, 4-D Degrading Bacteria

        염화 방향족 탄화수소를 분해하는 다수의 세균을 중량천으로부터 분리하였다. 이들 중 2, 4 - dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2, 4 - D)를 강력하게 분해하는 D-3, D-12, D-14 균주를 선발하여 유전적 응용을 위하여 수종의 항생물질에 대한 내성정도를 조사하였다. 또한 plasmid DNA를 검색한 결과 모두 4.2 -44.4 Mdal의 크기를 갖는 plasmid를 함유하고 있었으며 특히 3 균주 모두 유사한 크기의 large plasmid를 갖고 있었다. Several becterial isolates which utilize 2, 4dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as a sole carbon source and energy were isolated from Jung-Rang Stream. The isolates D-3, D-12, D-14 were characterized phenotypically and genetically, which had the prominent degradative ability of 2, 4-D. These isolates conserved one or more detectable plasmids of about 4.2 to 44.4 megadaltons. The plasmids of the isolates were studied to examine whether or not the 2, 4-D degrading genes exist in the plasmids, but all isolates harbored the large plasmid commonly.

        <P>The plastid transformation approach offers a number of unique advantages, including high-level transgene expression, multi-gene engineering, transgene containment, and a lack of gene silencing and position effects. The extension of plastid transformation technology to monocotyledonous cereal crops, including rice, bears great promise for the improvement of agronomic traits, and the efficient production of pharmaceutical or nutritional enhancement. Here, we report a promising step towards stable plastid transformation in rice. We produced fertile transplastomic rice plants and demonstrated transmission of the plastid-expressed green fluorescent protein (GFP) and aminoglycoside 3'-adenylyltransferase genes to the progeny of these plants. Transgenic chloroplasts were determined to have stably expressed the GFP, which was confirmed by both confocal microscopy and Western blot analyses. Although the produced rice plastid transformants were found to be heteroplastomic, and the transformation efficiency requires further improvement, this study has established a variety of parameters for the use of plastid transformation technology in cereal crops.</P>
