        We manufactured and characterized different sets of GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well structures for the long wavelength infrared photodetection. The samples were grown by MBE. We changed the aluminum composition of barrier region from 0.24 to 0.30 in 0.02 steps, and performed double crystals X-ray diffraction(DCXRD) and the photoluminescence measurements. DCXRD measurements correctly gave the expected aluminum compositions. Photoluminescence measurements revealed that the ground state energy of the well increases with composition as desired, but the change was not very significant.

      • 자연형 하천복원계획 수립을 위한 생물상 조사 및 분석

        The purpose of this study was a biota research and analysis for Close-to-nature stream restoration planning of Shinchun. The summary of this study is as follows; 1) The vascular plants in research area recorded of 45 species and insect fauna recorded of 34 species of 8 orders. As a result of table of community classification, the communities were two group; Quercus variabilis community(I), Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis-Quercus dentata community(II). 2) As a result of analysis on correlation of tree species, the level of significance in positive correlation between Quercus dentata and Corylus heterophyll aindicated 1% and between Pinus densiflora and Lespedeza bicolor also indicated 1%. 3) As a result of DBH analysis, it is expected that Quercus variabilis and Quercus dentata will dominateover other species in competition and its succession continuously maintains from now on in community I. In community II, it is assumed that there is a high possibility of changing into community of Quercus such as Quercus mongolica, Quercus dentata, and Quercus variabilis. 4) As a result of analysis on insect fauna, insect fauna consists of 94% of whole species as 32 species, 23 families, 8 orders. And 7 species, 7 families 4 orders was found in highly urbanized area, the vicinity of Sang-Dong bridge. 5) As mentioned above, Based on A biota fundamental research, Close-to-nature stream restoration planning were full of suggestions: i) Designating ecosystem preservation area, ii) Making Close-to-nature stream revetments, iii) Making pool-and-riffle, vi) Making decks for observation and walks for nature experience, v) Creating wetland biotope. Through these methods, it is necessary to promote bio-diversity and lead people to the space for eco-learning.

        Objective : The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of acupuncture at HT7(Shinmun) on the feeding behavior and hypothalamic neuropeptide Y(NPY) expression in the maternally separated rat pups. Methods : To show the effect of acupuncture, we performed maternal separation(MS) for 7 days beginning on postnatal day 14, and observed body weight, food intake, and NPY immunoreactivity in the paraventricular nucleus(PVN) of hypothalamus after acupuncturing at HT7, the end of the transverse crease of the ulnar wrist of the forepaw. Results : MS induced a significant decreases in body weight and food intake, while acupuncture treatment at acupoint HT7 showed much more improvement in those evaluations. NPY-immunoreactivity in area PVN were decreased in the MS group, but significantly increased in the HT7 group. Conclusions : These findings suggest that acupuncture has an effect on the feeding disorders caused by MS, possibly by modulating NPY expression in the PVN.

        단순 비만 지표로서의 목둘레의 분별점

        연구배경 : 목둘레는 인슐린저항성과 관련된 여러 질환과 연관되어 있으며 인슐린저항성의 위험이 증가되어 있는 환자들에서 목둘레가 임상적인 선별검사로 유용하게 쓰일 수 있으리라고 제시되어진 바 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 목둘레와 비만 관련 지표 및 인슐린저항성의 지표로서의 HOMA score 와의 상관관계를 알아보고, 비만 환자를 예측할 수 있는 최적의 목둘레 분별점을 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 건양대학병원 종합검진센터에 내원하여 건강검진을 받은 성인 남녀 대상자 364명 (남자 199명, 여자 165명) 중 249명 (남자 136명, 여자 113명) 실험군(test group)로 하여 receiver output curve (ROC) 분석을 통해 체질량지수 25 kg/㎡에 대한 최적의 (optimal) 민감도와 특이도를 가지는 목둘레 분별점을 구하였으며, 나머지 115명 (남자 63명, 여자 52명)을 유효군 (validation group)으로 하여 실험군에서 얻어진 목둘레 분별점을 적용하여 그 유효성을 알아보았다. 또한 묵둘레와 비만 관련 지표 및 인슐린저항성의 지표로서의 HOMA score와의 상관관계를 알아보았다. 결과 : 목둘레는 남녀 대상군 모두에서 허리둘레, 엉덩이 둘레, 엉덩이허리둘레비, 체질량지수, 체지방률, 공복시 혈중 인슐린, HOMA score와 강한 양의 상관관계를 보였으며 실험군에서 비만 환자를 예측할 수 있는 최적의 목둘레의 분별점은 남자에서는 36.6 cm 여자에서는 32.3 cm 였다. 이때의 민감도는 남자 81.92%, 여자 91.5%, 특이도는 남자 77.4%, 여자 69.7%, 정확도는 남자 80.2%, 여자 85%였다. 또한 실험군에서 얻어진 목둘레의 분별점을 유효군에 적용한 결과 남자에서는 민감도 91.9%, 특이도 53.9%, 정확도 76.1%로 나타났으며 여자에서는 민감도 81.25%, 특이도 85%, 정확도 82.69%로 나타났다. 결론 : 본 연구는 측정이 간편한 단순 비만 지표로서의 목둘레와 흔히 사용되는 비만 관련 지표 및 인슐린저항성과의 관련성을 밝혔으며 비만환자를 예측하기 위한 방법으로서 남자 36.6 cm, 여자 32.3 cm라는 목둘레의 분별점을 제시하였다. 향후 보다 일반화할 수 있는 보완 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 생각된다. Background : Neck circumference has been reported to be related to the other anthropometric measures of obesity and also associated with the metabolic disorders related to insulin resistance. The measurement of neck circumference could be useful in clinical screening for persons at an enhanced risk for insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to determine whether a single measure of neck circumference might be correlated with other obesity indices and HOMA score and to define neck circumference cutoff levels for obesity. Methods : We examined 364 consecutive persons (199 men and 165 women), who visited konyang university hospital health examination center during August, 2002. To find the optimal, maximal sensitivity and specificity for neck circumference, the receiver output curve (ROC) analysis of cutoff points against BMI (25 kg/㎡) was performed using the test group (136 men and 113 women). We validated the cutoff level using validation group (63 men and 52 women). Other obesity indices and fasting glucose and insulin were measured to find the correlation between neck circumference. Results : Neck circumference was significantly correlated with waist circumference, hip circumference, waist hip ratio, BMI, total body fat percent, fasting insulin and HOMA score. Neck circumference 36.6 cm for men and 32.3 cm for women was the best cutoff levels for determining the subjects with BMI over 25 kg/㎡. In the validation unrelated group, the test characteristics were acceptable with 91.9% sensitivity, 53.9% specificity, and 76.1% accuracy for men, and 81.25% sensitivity, 85% specificity, and 82.69% accuracy for women. Conclusion : Neck circumference as a simple and easy screening method for obesity was strongly correlated with the other conventional obesity indices and HOMA score as a index of insulin resistance and we defined neck circumference cutoff level for obesity according existing BMI cutoff levels.

      • 젊은 성인 남자의 흡연과 혈청 지질과의 관련성

        Objectives: This study was performed to find the association of cigarette smoking and blood lipid profiles in healthy young adults. Methods: The data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire and health examination in 489 professional soldiers from 6 to 12 May, 2004. The status of cigarette smoking was classified by non-smoking, ex-smoked, ≤4.9, 5-9.9, and ≥10 pack-years. The statistical analysis were used by chi-square test, analysis of variance and analysis of covariates. Results: In status of subjects cigarette smoking, current smoking, ex-smoked, and non-smoking were 71.8%, 11.2%, and 17.0%, respectively, In distribution by amount of smoking, non-smoking, ex-smoked, ≤4.9 pack-years, 5-9.9 pack-years, and ≥10 pack-years were 17.0%, 11.2%, 37.4%, 21.3%, and 13.1%, respectively. At other confounding variables were controlled, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were increased significantly when amount of smoking was increased. However, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol did not showed statistically significant differences, Conclusion: Smoking has relevant to total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and it is need to perform the further study for finding how blood lipid profiles are affected its level by cigarette smoking and to find an influence of cigarette smoking on cardiovascular disease.

      • 입원 중인 베트남 참전 군인의 삶의 만족도와 관련된 요인

        Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to identify the factors associated with life satisfaction of hospitalized Vietnam veterans. Material and Methods: The data were collected from 200 hospitalized Vietnam veterans of 5 veterans hospitals in Korea from September 13 to 23, 2004. Information of general characteristics, health behavior, disease history, family function, depression and life satisfaction were collected by structured questionnaire. Results: The mean of life satisfaction was 21.48(±6.03), and the mean of depression was 53.10(±9.64). The prevalence of depression was mild depression 24.0%, moderate depression 43.5% and severe depression 25.0%. Depression was associated with life satisfaction and depression was higher, life satisfaction was lower. Family function and age were positively associated with life satisfaction, Conclusion: Life satisfaction was affected by depression and family function in hospitalized Vietnam veterans. Therefore, it was thought that psychosocial approaches such as improve depression and family function in care of hospitalized Vietnam veterans is required.

        Intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> Mobilization and Beta-hexosaminidase Release Are Not Influenced by 60 Hz-electromagnetic Fields (EMF) in RBL 2H3 Cells

        The effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) on intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> mobilization and cellular function in RBL 2H3 cells were investigated. Exposure to EMF (60 Hz, 0.1 or 1 mT) for 4 or 16 h did not produce any cytotoxic effects in RBL 2H3 cells. Melittin, ionomycin and thapsigargin each dose-dependently increased the intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> concentration. The increase of intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> induced by these three agents was not affected by exposure to EMF (60 Hz, 1 mT) for 4 or 16 h in RBL 2H3 cells. To investigate the effect of EMF on exocytosis, we measured beta- hexosaminidase release in RBL 2H3 cells. Basal release of beta-hexosaminidase was 12.3±2.3% in RBL 2H3 cells. Exposure to EMF (60 Hz, 0.1 or 1 mT) for 4 or 16 h did not affect the basal or 1ՌM melittin-induced beta-hexosaminidase release in RBL 2H3 cells. This study suggests that exposure to EMF (60 Hz, 0.1 or 1 mT), which is the limit of occupational exposure, has no influence on intracellular Ca<sup>2+</sup> mobilization and cellular function in RBL 2H3 cells.

        A Novel Hypothesis and Characterization to Isolate Microvascular Endothelial Cells Simultaneously with Adipose-Derived Stem Cells from the Human Adipose-Derived Stromal Vascular Fraction

        Background: Angiogenesis and vasculogenesis are essential processes for successful tissue regeneration in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is not only a source of adipose stem cells (ASC) but also a suitable source of microvascular endothelial cells because it is a rich capillary network. So, we propose a new hypothesis for isolating adipose-derived human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC-A) from the SVF and developed a dual isolation system that isolates two cell types from one tissue. Method: To isolate HMVEC-A, we analyzed the supernatant discarded when ASC is isolated from the adipose-derived SVF. Based on this analysis, we assumed that the SVF adherent to the bottom of the culture plate was divided into two fractions: the stromal fraction as the ASC-rich fraction, and the vascular fraction (VF) as the endothelial cells-rich fraction floating in the culture supernatant. VF isolation was optimized and the efficiency was compared, and the endothelial cells characteristics of HMVEC-A were confirmed by flow cytometric analysis, immunocytochemistry (ICC), a DiI-acetylated low-density lipoprotein (DiI-Ac-LDL) uptake, and in vitro tube formation assay. Results: Consistent with the hypothesis, we found a large population of HMVEC-A in the VF and isolated these HMVEC-A by our isolation method. Additionally, this method had higher yields and shorter doubling times than other endothelial cells isolation methods and showed typical morphological and phenotypic characteristics of endothelial cells. Conclusion: Cells obtained by the method according to our hypothesis can be applied as a useful source for studies such as tissue-to-tissue networks, angiogenesis and tissue regeneration, patient-specific cell therapy, and organoid chips.
