Facts and Fiction: The Myth of Suvaṇṇabhūmi Through the Thai and Burmese Looking Glass
Nicolas Revire 서강대학교 동아연구소 2018 TRaNS(Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Sou Vol.6 No.2
Most scholars think that the generic name ‘Golden Land’ (Sanskrit, Suvarṇabhūmi; Pali, Suvaṇṇabhūmi) was first used by Indian traders as a vague designation for an extensive region beyond the subcontinent, presumably in Southeast Asia. Some Pali sources specifically link Suvaṇṇabhūmi with the introduction of Buddhism to the region. The locus classicus is the Sri Lankan Mahāvaṃsa chronicle (fifth century AD) which states that two monks, Soṇa and Uttara, were sent there for missionary activities in the time of King Asoka (third century BC). However, no Southeast Asian textual or epigraphic sources refer to this legend or to the Pali term Suvaṇṇabhūmi before the second millennium AD. Conversely, one may ask, what hard archaeological evidence is there for the advent of Buddhism in mainland Southeast Asia? This article re-examines the appropriation of the name Suvaṇṇabhūmi in Thailand and Burma for political and nationalist purposes and deconstructs the connotation of the term and what it has meant to whom, where, and when. It also carefully confronts the Buddhist literary evidence and earliest epigraphic and archaeological data, distinguishing material discoveries from legendary accounts, with special reference to the ancient Mon countries of Rāmaññadesa (lower Burma) and Dvāravatı̄ (central Thailand).
Middle East and North African Integration: through the lens of Non-Tariff Measures
( Nicolas Peridy ),( Ahmed Ghoneim ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2013 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.28 No.4
Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) have recently become a central issue for economists and policy makers. Based on a new database developed by the World Bank on five Middle East and North African(MENA) countries at a very detailed product level, this article provides calculations of the average tariff equivalents (AVEs) of NTMs in these countries. A second contribution is the development of an original empirical model with detailed trade costs. This makes it possible to provide the assessment of these NTMs impacts as well as other trade costs ones on the trade of goods in these countries. This analysis is also extended to the trade of 15 service sectors, through the use of the updated GTAP database. Results show that NTMs are very significant in the selected MENA countries. The model also shows that NTMs are significantly trade reducing in almost all MENA countries, especially Sanitary and Phytosanitary(SPS) measures. NTMs in services are also significantly trade reducing, especially in Maghreb countries. The study shows that not all NTMs must necessarily been reduced or removed, but the ones which are particular trade-reducing must be paid particular attention. In addition, the governments should also progress toward either mutual recognition, or the adoption of international standards especially in relation to technical standards.

We described for the first time the contrast enhancement of a giant fibrovascular esophageal polyp using ultrasound contrast agent,Sonovue® (Bracco, Milan, Italy) during echoendoscopy. Fine Doppler was unsuccessful in showing vascularization due to the mobilecharacteristic of the tumor. In contrast, via Sonovue® , tissue microcirculation was highlighted inside the entire head of the polyp, leading to better appreciate the risk of bleeding related to its resection. In a second part, we showed the feasibility of classic polypectomyfor this giant polyp (5×5 cm) without complication and results of control endoscopy at 3 months. The present case is summarized in avideo.
Judgments toward women wearing high heels: a forced-choice evaluation
Nicolas Guéguen,Jordy Stefan,Quentin Renault 한국의류학회 2016 Fashion and Textiles Vol.3 No.1
Research reported that men interact with women wearing high heels more readily than with the same women wearing flat heels. However, the effect of heels on the judgment of women by both men and women has received little attention. Male and female participants viewed two photographs of the same woman’s body profile; the woman wore high heels in the one and flat heels in the other, although her shoes and feet were not visible. Participants were asked to select one photograph of the woman on several dimensions of body attractiveness. A significant greater number of male and female participants selected the target with high heels as the sexier, the prettier, and the more elegant, with the more attractive legs and buttocks. The same target was also perceived as the younger person and the photograph that would be preferred by others and the more appropriate for a photo album. The findings support the assumption that high heels could act as secondary sexual characteristics that increase the attractiveness of women to men.
Historical Relations between Poland and North Korea from 1948 to 1980
Nicolas Levi,문경연 통일연구원 2018 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.27 No.1
This article focuses on relations between Poland and North Korea from 1948 till 1980, focusing on places of remembrance of Poles in North Korea, and North Korean citizens in Poland. During this period, bilateral relations between these countries were very close due to their belonging to the same ideological movement. The article focuses on political, ideological, cultural, and economic relations based on three historical phases of the Korean War (1950-1953), Post-Korean War (1953-1960) and disturbance of Poland-North Korea relations (1960-1980). The paper argues that although Poland did make efforts to successfully foster mutual relations, sometimes regardless of Polish interest, the behavior of DPRK authorities reduced the benefits Poland could gain from maintaining relations with this country. The DPRK focused on its interest and not on the interest of fraternal nations. This led to a negative image of the DPRK authorities among the Polish leadership and automatically to negative views concerning the DPRK population among Poles.

Allergy to metal, especially to titanium, is a poorly known subject in orthopedic surgery and is mostly found after arthroplasty. Here, we describe an original case of titanium allergy that developed after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction of the left knee in a patient with a history of severe atopic dermatitis. Three years after the surgery, he returned to the clinic with the femoral cortical button in his hand; he removed the device from the wound when the skin spontaneously opened at the lateral part of the thigh. The wound healed with dressings without use of any antibiotics. Clinical and functional results were favorable and magnetic resonance imaging signal of the graft was normal. We ruled out the possibility of infection and the final diagnosis was allergy to titanium. This case demonstrates the need to investigate the presence of allergy to metal, including titanium, before an ACL reconstruction.
Consolidation of a Learned Skill Correlates with Dopamine SPECT Uptake in Early Parkinson’s Disease
Nicolas Nicastro,Aurélie L. Manuel,Valentina Garibotto,Pierre R. Burkhard,Armin Schnider 대한신경과학회 2018 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.14 No.4
Background and Purpose Basal ganglia play a pivotal role in procedural memory. However, the correlation between skill learning and striatal 123I-ioflupane uptake in Parkinson’s disease (PD) has not been reported previously. Our objective was to determine whether visuomotor skill learning is associated with striatal 123I-ioflupane uptake in early PD. Methods We designed a case–control study to assess learning and consolidation of a visuomotor learning task (mirrored drawing of star-shaped figures) performed on two consecutive days by early-PD patients (disease duration <2 years) and age-matched healthy subjects. Outcomes were the error rate and time per trial, as well as performance indices to assess the relative improvement on the first day (learning) and the retention on the second day (consolidation). For PD patients, we evaluated the correlation of skill learning with semiquantitative 123I-ioflupane uptake. Results We included 9 PD patients and 10 control subjects with the same baseline characteristics (age, male/female ratio, educational level, Mini Mental State Examination score, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score, all p>0.18) other than the score on part III of the Movement Disorders Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, which was higher in the PD patients (mean±SD: 15.0±10.4 vs. 1.3±1.1, p<0.001). The learning indices were the same in the two groups (p>0.5), whereas PD patients showed a lower consolidation index for the time per trial (p=0.009). Moreover, this performance was correlated with uptake in the right caudate nucleus (Spearman’s rho=0.82, p=0.007) and the right striatum (Spearman’s rho=0.67, p=0.049), including when multiple linear regression adjusting for the levodopa equivalent daily dose was performed (p=0.005 for the caudate nucleus and p=0.024 for the striatum). Conclusions This study provides evidence of a correlation between procedural memory impairment and striatal dopaminergic dysfunction in early PD.
