Uplift phenomenon of container cranes occurred during the past earthquakes. Therefore, the evaluation of the potential uplift of the container cranes is an important task when the demand for trade is increasing. The objective of this study is to investigate the probability of the uplift occurrence of the container crane subjected to a wide range of earthquake intensity. The uplift results are then fitted to the log-normal cumulative distribution function (CDF).

The dynamic behaviour of container crane under seismic loading is a complex issue, especially for assessing uplift. The pin support is commonly used to model the contact between crane’s legs and the ground/rails in low seismicity area. However, the behaviour of the structure is quite different under high seismic intensity because the crane’s wheels are not fixed to the rails in operation. In this study, therefore, a 3-D finite element (FE) model was simulated with gap elements to consider the uplift behavior. In addition, the vertical reaction of the crane’s legs were investigated as well.

Ship-to-shore (STS) container gantry cranes, used at terminals for loading and unloading containers from a ship, are an important part of harbor structures. The size and weight of modern STS container cranes are increasing to satisfy the demand for bigger ships. This is expected to result in more lateral load when excited by seismic motions. The existing Korean STS container cranes did not behave properly during several recent moderate earthquakes in South Korea. Typical Korean STS container cranes must be checked for the earthquake-resistant capacity. In this research, two nonlinear static analyses procedures, also known as pushover analyses, commonly used for seismic design of buildings, namely, capacity spectrum method and equivalent linearization method, are comprehensively studied to check their suitability for studying seismic behavior of STS cranes. Results obtained by these two nonlinear static analysis methods are then compared with the results obtained by nonlinear time-history analyses of the STS cranes by exciting them with nine recorded earthquake time histories around worldwide. The behaviors of the cranes are analyzed in terms of the total base shear, drift, and base uplift. The comparisons indicate that the nonlinear static methods can be appropriate for estimating the total base shear and drift of the portal frame of a container crane. The pushover analyses also provide information on performance levels as defined in ASCE/SEI 41-13, of a typical Korean STS container crane. Furthermore, it is observed that the uplift response of the crane is strongly influenced by the duration of an earthquake.

In this study, an experimental study of Impulse Thermography was carried out on a concrete specimen with in-placed artificial defects at different depths and dimensions. Then, all the data were processed by Pulse Phase Thermography technique by performing Fast Fourier Transformation. The results were compared with the absolute contrast method.

Since machine learning was invented, there have been many different machine learning-based algorithms, from shallow learning to deep learning models, that provide solutions to the classification tasks. But then it poses a problem in choosing a suitable classification algorithm that can improve the classification/detection efficiency for a certain network context. With that comes whether an algorithm provides good performance, why it works in some problems and not in others. In this paper, we present a data-centric analysis to provide a way for selecting a suitable classification algorithm. This data-centric approach is a new viewpoint in exploring relationships between classification performance and facts and figures of data sets.

Aims: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) is considered as a safe and effective procedure in well - selected patients and appropriate surgical technique. Our aim is to evaluate suitability of using protocol for LPD in treatment of periampullary cancer at a single team. Methods: case series Results: Indication for LPD included 37 cases with resectable tumors which were classified basing on NCCN. All witness evaluation risk of complications with PREPARE score, ASA and evaluation risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) with FRS classification. There were 2 open conversions because of vein resections, accounting for 5.4%. Standard lymphadenectomy was performed in all of 37 cases. In term of PREPARE score, major complications (Clavien - Dindo >= III) were 17.8%, 0% and 0% (5/28, 0/5 and 0/2 cases) in low risk, intermediate risk and high risk group, respectively. All of cases had ASA I or II. POPF happened 11.1% (1/9), 4.1% (1/24) and 50% (1/2) in low risk, intermediate risk and high risk group, respectively. Frozen section was needed for R0 margin. Retrieved lymph nodes was 8 - 18 with 12 lymph nodes in average. Conclusions: Indication for LPD with resectable tumors is acceptable. ASA I or II is a safe measure to select patient for LPD. FRS classification shows appropriation to evaluate risk of POPF.
