This article compares archetypal heroes in Nguyễn Huy Thiệp's “The Tiger’s Heart” and John Steinbeck's The Pearl. It aims to explore the voices of marginalized groups and ethnic minorities who suffer amidst the clash of civilizations. In exploring cultural communication between minority and mainstream communities as embodied by the archetypal heroes in the two works, this article highlights implications of resistance against values of the dominant. The method of "mythization" in modern Eastern and Western Literature, as this article argues, demonstrates the importance of minority discourses in as far as cultural conflicts in the globalizing world are concerned.
The Determinants of Environmental Information Disclosure in Vietnam Listed Companies

Environmental pollution and climate change in Vietnam are now becoming a major concern. This situation is increasing the pressure on the companies to improve their social responsibility in production and business activities and disclose the environmental information to meet the requirements of stakeholders. This study investigates the internal and external factors of the company that affects the environmental information disclosure of listed companies on the Vietnam stock market as business sector, firm size, corporate manager perceptions, profitability, financial leverage, community pressure, pressures from stakeholders, government pressure influencing environmental information disclosure. Analytical data collected through the survey of 120 listed companies on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE). By testing Cronbach's Alpha, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and logistic regression analysis, the results of the study show that the level of environmental information disclosure of listed companies on the stock market in Vietnam depends heavily on government regulations, followed by the pressure from stakeholders, community pressure, views of business managers, companies size, business sector, and particularly profitability and financial leverage factors that have a negative relationship with environmental information disclosure.

In this study, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation using fl y ash (FA) modifi ed ZnO nanoparticles to the decolorization of acid orange II (AOII) was studied. The combination of ZnO and fl y ash via an incipient wetness impregnation method to form ZOFA composites created a synergistic eff ect that led to effi cient catalytic ozonation activity towards AOII degradation and decolorization compared with individual ozonation processes. From the experimental results, ZOFA composite with the optimal weight ratio between ZnO NPs and FA was 20 wt% (denoted as ZOFA-20) that exhibited outstanding catalytic ozonation activity. Moreover, through other investigations including initial pH conditions and catalyst dosage, AOII could be eff ectively and optimally eliminated by 0.5 g of ZOFA-20 with an initial pH value of 11. The corresponding k value was measured as 0.248 min −1 with a maximum TOC removal content of 77.27%. Besides, ZOFA-20 could show high catalytic ozonation activity even at highly concentrated AOII concentrations while it could also retain its excellent stability and reusability over 5 continuous AOII removal cycles. From the experimental and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results, hydroxyl radical ( · OH) was the main active species during the catalytic ozonation of AOII. The present study provides a promising approach to prepare novel composite-based fl y ash that would be applicable for removing azo dye and other dye pollutants in water via a catalytic ozonation strategy.

Myogenesis and adipogenesis are the important processes determining the muscle growth and fat accumulation livestock, which ultimately affecting their meat quality. Hanwoo is a popular breed and its meat has been exported to other countries. The objective of this study was to compare the myogenesis and adipogenesis properties in satellite cells, and meat quality between Hanwoo and Vietnamese yellow cattle (VYC). Same 28-months old Hanwoo (body weight: 728±45 kg) and VYC (body weight: 285±36 kg) steers (n=10 per breed) were used. Immediately after slaughter, tissue samples were collected from longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles for satellite cells isolation and assays. After 24 h post-mortem, LL muscles from left carcass sides were collected for meat quality analysis. Under the same in vitro culture condition, the proliferation rate was higher in Hanwoo compared to VYC (p<0.05). Fusion index was almost 3 times greater in Hanwoo (42.17%), compared with VYC (14.93%; p<0.05). The expressions of myogenesis (myogenic factor 5, myogenic differentiation 1, myogenin, and myogenic factor 6)- and adipogenesis (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma)-regulating genes, and triglyceride content were higher in Hanwoo, compared with VYC (p<0.05). Hanwoo beef had a higher intramuscular fat and total monounsaturated fatty acids contents than VYC beef (p<0.05). Whilst, VYC meat had a higher CIE a* and total polyunsaturated fatty acids content (p<0.05). Overall, there was a significant difference in the in vitro culture characteristics and genes expression of satellite cells, and meat quality between the Hanwoo and VYC.

The study examines the impact of international integration on Vietnam's rural and urban income inequalities using the regression model. The data used for this study is based on the results of the Vietnam Household Living Standards survey from 2008 to 2016 of the General Statistics Office. These surveys conducted nationwide with a sample size of 46,995 households in 3,133 communes/wards which were representative at national, regional, urban, rural and provincial levels. The level of international economic integration used in the study is the proportion of import and export turnover of GDP, the proportion of FDI and GDP by province. Due to the heterogeneity and unobservableness of the single observant in the data set, we selected the models of random and fixed effects. The research results show that during the economic integration process, the Export/GDP factor is negatively related to income inequality. The remaining factors (GDP per capita, FDI/GDP, Educational level of households, Percentage of internet users, Aggregation of foreign cash inflow and GDP of the province) are all positively related to income inequality. The findings help assess the impact of international integration on rural-urban income inequality, but also provides a concrete basis to help policymakers address income inequality in the integration process.
All-trans Retinoic Acid Induces Expression and Secretion of Carboxypeptidase D in THP-1 Cells

Carboxypeptidase D (CPD) is a zinc-dependent protease, which is highly expressed in macrophages, and is thought to participate in inflammatory processes. In the present study, we investigated the possible regulatory effect of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), which is an active form of vitamin A and plays a critical regulatory role in both the innate and adaptive immunity, on CPD expression and secretion in human monocytic THP-1 cells. CPD mRNA expression first increased, from a concentration as low as 10 nM ATRA to a maximum level of expression, at 1 μM. ATRA enhanced intracellular CPD expression in a time- and concentration-dependent manner but did not affect cell surface CPD expression. Interestingly, 9-cis-RA did not affect CPD expression. Additionally, an experiment with RAR/RXR selective agonist or antagonists demonstrated that ATRA-induced enhancement of CPD expression was RAR/RXR dependent. ATRA also enhanced CPD secretion from THP-1 cells; however, this enhancement was RAR/RXR-independent. The anti-inflammatory agent dexamethasone reversed ATRA-induced enhancement of CPD expression and secretion. Our results suggest ATRA exerts regulatory effects on expression and secretion of CPD in human monocytes, and ATRA-induced CPD secretion may be associated with inflammatory response.
Bacillus subtilis S1-0210 as a Biocontrol Agent against Botrytis cinerea in Strawberries

Bacillus subtilis S1-0210 was selected as a biological agent against Botrytis cinerea in strawberry. The isolate inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea in vitro tests. A wettable powder formulation of B. subtilis S1-0210 significantly reduced infection rates with lower than 5%, compared with higher than 70% of infection rates in untreated control. The formulation showed 85 to 89% control efficacies of gray mold incidences on fruits of strawberry in pots. Pre-treatment of the agent was more effective in controlling gray mold on fruits and leaves than post-treatment at the early stage of disease development. The formulation also showed 70% control efficacy of gray mold incidence on fruits of strawberry in a field trial. The results indicate that B. subtilis S1- 0210 in the wettable powder formulation may be a potential biocontrol agent to control gray mold on strawberry.

Metabolites from medicinal plants continue to hold significant value in the exploration and advancement of novel pharmaceuticals. In the search for plants containing compounds with anti-inflammatory effects, we observed that the ethanol (EtOH) extract obtained from the aerial components of Gouania leptostachya DC. var. tonkinensis Pit. exhibited substantial suppression of nitric oxide (NO) in vitro. In a phytochemical study on an EtOH extract of G. leptostachya, 11 compounds were purified, including one unreported compound namely gouanioside A (1). Their chemical structures were unambiguously determined through the use of various spectroscopic techniques, such as 1 and 2D NMR, IR, and HR-ESI-MS, and by producing derivatives via chemical reactions. The EtOH extract, fractions, and a new compound exerted inflammatory effects by altering NO synthesis in murine RAW264.7 macrophage cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. The underlying inflammatory mechanism of the new compound 1 was also explored through various in vitro experiments. The results of this study indicate the potential usefulness of new compound 1 from G. leptostachya as a treatment for inflammatory diseases.
