This article compares archetypal heroes in Nguyễn Huy Thiệp's “The Tiger’s Heart” and John Steinbeck's The Pearl. It aims to explore the voices of marginalized groups and ethnic minorities who suffer amidst the clash of civilizations. In exploring cultural communication between minority and mainstream communities as embodied by the archetypal heroes in the two works, this article highlights implications of resistance against values of the dominant. The method of "mythization" in modern Eastern and Western Literature, as this article argues, demonstrates the importance of minority discourses in as far as cultural conflicts in the globalizing world are concerned.

Background Androgens and androgen receptor (AR) are critical regulators of the masculinization process in male sexual development. The absence of a functioning AR results in the development of the androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), a rare disorder of sexual development (DSD) characterized by the external genitalia feminization, gynecomastia, and impaired spermatogenesis. Objective To determine the AR gene mutations associated with male DSD in four unrelated Vietnamese patients. Methods To detect the disease-causing mutations, whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed on four patients diagnosed with AIS. Sanger sequencing was then used for validation of the identified mutations. Finally, 12 web-based tools, three-dimensional protein modeling software, and the guidelines issued by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics were used to assess the potential pathogenicity of these mutations. Results Four distinct novel mutations, namely c.1834T > A (p.Cys612Ser), c.2122 C > G (p.Leu708Val), c.2630T > G (p.Phe877Cys), and c.2641 C > A (p.Leu881Met) in the AR gene, were identified in four AIS patients using WES. The in silico analysis results revealed that the Cys612, Leu708, Phe877, and Leu881 sites are important for an appropriate response to androgens of the AR, and mutation at these sites can have adverse effects on the AR functions, androgen–AR interaction, and AR signaling pathway. Conclusions WES and in silico analyses strongly suggested that four novel AR mutations are pathogenic and have led to the development of AIS in the four Vietnamese patients under consideration.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this study, a hybrid of titanium dioxide, benzophenone and ethylene vinyl acetate (TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-BP-EVA) was used as a novel catalyst to accelerate photo-oxidization reaction of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film under ambient conditions. The degradation of the LDPE films (thickness of ~25 μm) containing different catalyst concentrations were successfully investigated by different techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical tests. The results showed that the use of catalyst in which TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-BP content (1/3 w/w) is 0.5 phr (parts per hundred resin) and EVA content is 4.5 phr in a LDPE film provided the best degradation rate. The carbonyl index of the polymer film achieved the highest value without an equilibrium stage. Besides, the carbon-carbon backbone of the polymer was completely broken down consistent with the deformation of the surface. In addition, the mechanical properties impressively dropped after 3 months’ exposure. The obtained results imply that the TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-BP-EVA compound can be considered as an efficient catalyst for the photodegradation of LDPE polymer.</P>

Background: Hemostatic dysfunction during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) due to blood-circuit interaction and the consequences of shear stress imposed by flow rates lead to rapid coagulation cascade and thrombus formation in the ECMO system and blood vessels. We aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors for cannula-associated arterial thrombosis (CaAT) post-decannulation. Methods: A retrospective study of patients undergoing arterial cannula removal following ECMO was performed. We evaluated the incidence of CaAT and compared the characteristics, ECMO machine parameters, cannula sizes, number of blood products transfused during ECMO, and daily hemostasis parameters in patients with and without CaAT. Multivariate analysis identified the risk factors for CaAT. Results: Forty-seven patients requiring venoarterial ECMO (VA-ECMO) or hybrid methods were recruited for thrombosis screening. The median Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score was 11 (interquartile range, 8–13). CaAT occurred in 29 patients (61.7%), with thrombosis in the superficial femoral artery accounting for 51.7% of cases. The rate of limb ischemia complications in the CaAT group was 17.2%. Multivariate analysis determined that the ECMO flow rate–body surface area (BSA) ratio (100 ml/min/m2) was an independent factor for CaAT, with an odds ratio of 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.66–0.95, P=0.014). Conclusions: We found that the incidence of CaAT was 61.7% following successful decannulation from VA-ECMO or hybrid modes, and the ECMO flow rate–BSA ratio was an independent risk factor for CaAT. We suggest screening for arterial thrombosis following VA-ECMO, and further research is needed to determine the risks and benefits of such screening.
베트남에서의 한류영향에 따른 한국제품 이미지 제고에 관한 연구

본 연구는 베트남에서의 한류영향에 따른 한국제품 이미지 제고에 관해 연구하였다. 다음과 같은 한계점을 가지며 이를 통한 향후 연구방향이 도출된다. 첫째, 본 연구는 베트님시장에서의 한류지각 및 원산지이미지에 대한 실증연구를 시 작했다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있지만, 표본 대상이 하노이와 호치민 시민으로 대도시민에 한정되어 연구가 진행되었기 때문에 일반화의 한계 점이 있다. 따라서 향후 연구에서는 베트남 전체시장에 있어 한국원산지이미지 및 한류지각에 따른 한국제품구매행동에 영향을 검증하기 위해 다양한 베트남 지역을 추가하여 조사를 수행해서 연구의 일반성윤 높여야 할 것 이다. 둘째, 본 연구는 회귀분석을 사용하여 각 영향관계를 검증하였다. 그러나 각 개념 간의 영향력 정도를 정확히 파악하기 위해서는 연구방법론상 다양한 분석 방법의 접근이 요구된다. 따라서 향후 연구에는 인과관계분석인 SPSS등을 이용하거나 정성적 연구를 바탕으로 한 연구가 병행되어 수행된다면 베트남 소비자행동을 파악하는데 더욱 유용한 결과를 예측할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 셋째, 본 연구에서는 한류지각이 한국제품태도에 미치는 영향을 검증하였다 그러 나 한류지각의 고/저 정도나 한국 상품구매 고/저 정도 등에 따라 한국제품 태도에 미치는 영향이 다를 것으로 생각할 수 있다.따라서 향후 연구에서 는 한류지각과 구매경 혐의 고/저 집단에 따른 한국제품태도에 미지는 영향판계를 검증 하고자 한다.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by ritualistic- repetitive behaviors and impaired verbal and non-verbal communication. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than girls. Genetics have been shown to play a key role in the etiology of autism. Many genes were found to be implicated in the inheritance of idiopathic autism. Analysis of mutation abnormalities associated with autism contributes significantly to the identification of autism candidate genes. Whole-exome sequencing has been shown as an application of the next generation sequencing technology used to determine the variations of all coding regions, or exons of the known genes. In the present study, we have found two novel heterozygous missense mutations (p.L111P and p.R3048C) on the RYR3 gene, which was located in the autism susceptibility region (15q14-q15) in a 9-year-old boy with ASD. Therefore, the sequence missense mutations provide the first suggestive link between a genetic abnormality in the RYR3 gene and a neurodevelopmental disorder.
