Pretreatment of Albino Rats with Methanolic Fruit Extract of $Randia$ $Dumetorum$ (L.) Protects against Alcohol Induced Liver Damage

Noorani, Arshad Ali,Kale, Mohan K. The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2012 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.16 No.2

Alcohol abuse and its medical and social consequences are a major health problem in many areas of the world. The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of methanolic fruit extract of $Randia$ $Dumetorum$ (L.) on alcohol-induced liver damage in rats. Rats were divided into five different groups (n=6), group I served as a control, group II received ethanol (3 ml/100 g/day p.o.), group III served as standard group and received silymarin (50 mg/kg p.o.), group IV and V served as extract treatment groups and received 50 & 100 mg/kg methanolic extract of $R.$ $dumetorum$. All the treatment protocols followed 30 days and after rats were sacrificed blood and liver were used for biochemical and histological studies, respectively. The activities serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglyceride (TG), direct bilirubin (DB), total bilirubin (TB) and lipid peroxidation were statistically increased in rats exposed to alcohol while total protein and glutathione decreased compared to control rats. Treatment with $R.$ $dumetorum$ significantly decreased the elevated levels of ALT, AST, TG, DB, TB and lipid peroxidation compared to the group exposed to alcohol only. $R.$ $dumetorum$ significantly resulted in increased levels of total protein and reduced glutathione compared to the group that received alcohol only. Histology of the liver section of the animals treated with $R.$ $dumetorum$ improved the hepatotoxicity caused by alcohol. Hence the study concluded that $R.$ $dumetorum$ has potential hepatoprotective activity.

A New Acute-At-Home Child and Adolescent Clinical Service: Evaluation of Impact

        Noorani Khalfan,Carol Coventry,David Cawthorpe 대한신경정신의학회 2022 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.19 No.1

Objective An Acute at Home (AAH) clinical service was implemented to reduce emergency and inpatient admissions to the regional tertiary child and adolescent mental health system. This paper examines describes the served the population and impact on emergency and inpatient admissions. Methods Analysis of re-admission rates for those enrolled before and after the May 2019 implementation of the AAH service in comparison over the same time period to an unexposed comparison group. In addition the groups were compared on clinical and demographic variables comparing those exposed and those not exposed to the AAH service. Results The results indicated that the AAH group experienced reduced rates of readmission and lengths of stay post-exposure. Family composition, sex, seven Adverse Childhood Experience survey items, and nine Western Canada Waitlist Child Mental Health Priority Criteria Score items distinguished those exposed to AAH compared to those who were not. Thirteen of 19 independent variables indicated greater pathology in the AAH group with less likelihood of potential of danger to self. Conclusion The present results indicate a substantial benefit of the AAH service via reducing readmissions and lengths of stay. The quantitative measures warrant a careful qualitative examination of the AAH processes along with ongoing monitoring of the program’s effect.

Efficacy of alpha-lipoic acid in patients with burning mouth syndrome compared to that of placebo or other interventions: a systematic review with meta-analyses

        Jessica Christy,Salman Noorani,Frank Sy,Kamal Al-Eryani,Reyes Enciso 대한치과마취과학회 2022 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.22 No.5

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic oral disorder of unknown etiology which presents therapeutic challenges. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) has been studied as a potential treatment for BMS. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of ALA compared to that of placebo or other interventions in individuals with BMS. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) using ALA to treat BMS were identified from MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to February 3, 2021. The assessment of the risk of bias in the included studies was based on the Cochrane guidelines. The primary outcome evaluated was the visual analog scale (VAS) pain intensity. ALA was compared with placebo, clonazepam, gabapentin, pregabalin, ALA plus gabapentin, capsaicin, Biotène®, and laser therapy. Altogether, 137 records were scanned for inclusion/exclusion, and nine RCTs (two unclear and seven at high risk of bias) were included in the qualitative and quantitative analyses, with a total of 594 patients with BMS included in this review. All studies reported an improvement in VAS pain scores ranging from -0.72 to -2.77. Meta-analysis results showed a non-significant reduction in pain intensity for ALA (P = 0.616) compared to that of placebo on a VAS of 0–10. Patients taking ALA were 1.923 times more likely to show an improvement in self-reported BMS symptoms (P = 0.031) than those in the placebo group. Clonazepam and pregabalin showed a significant VAS pain reduction of 4.08 and 4.68 (P < 0.001), respectively, compared to that with ALA. Although ALA intervention provided a non-significant improvement in the pain score and was more likely to produce a reduction in BMS symptoms, the evidence was of low quality. Further research is needed to establish clear guidelines for the use of ALA for BMS treatment.

WEYL'S TYPE THEOREMS FOR ALGEBRAICALLY (p, k)-QUASIHYPONORMAL OPERATORS

Rashid, Mohammad Hussein Mohammad,Noorani, Mohd Salmi Mohd Korean Mathematical Society 2012 대한수학회논문집 Vol.27 No.1

For a bounded linear operator T we prove the following assertions: (a) If T is algebraically (p, k)-quasihyponormal, then T is a-isoloid, polaroid, reguloid and a-polaroid. (b) If $T^*$ is algebraically (p, k)-quasihyponormal, then a-Weyl's theorem holds for f(T) for every $f{\in}Hol({\sigma}T))$, where $Hol({\sigma}(T))$ is the space of all functions that analytic in an open neighborhoods of ${\sigma}(T)$ of T. (c) If $T^*$ is algebraically (p, k)-quasihyponormal, then generalized a-Weyl's theorem holds for f(T) for every $f{\in}Hol({\sigma}T))$. (d) If T is a (p, k)-quasihyponormal operator, then the spectral mapping theorem holds for semi-B-essential approximate point spectrum $\sigma_{SBF_+^-}(T)$, and for left Drazin spectrum ${\sigma}_{lD}(T)$ for every $f{\in}Hol({\sigma}T))$.

A Study on the Uniformity Improvement of Residual Layer of a Large Area Nanoimprint Lithography

Kim, Kug-Weon,Noorani, Rafigul I.,Kim, Nam-Woong The Korean Society Of SemiconductorDisplay Technol 2010 반도체디스플레이기술학회지 Vol.9 No.4

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is one of the most versatile and promising technology for micro/nano-patterning due to its simplicity, high throughput and low cost. Recently, one of the major trends of NIL is large-area patterning. Especially, the research of the application of NIL to TFT-LCD field has been increasing. Technical difficulties to keep the uniformity of the residual layer, however, become severer as the imprinting area increases. In this paper we performed a numerical study for a large area NIL (the $2^nd$ generation TFT-LCD glass substrate ($370{\times}470$ mm)) by using finite element method. First, a simple model considering the surrounding wall was established in order to simulate effectively and reduce the computing time. Then, the volume of fluid (VOF) and grid deformation method were utilized to calculate the free surfaces of the resist flow based on an Eulerian grid system. From the simulation, the velocity fields and the imprinting pressure during the filling process in the NIL were analyzed, and the effect of the surrounding wall and the uniformity of residual layer were investigated.
