Political Turmoil and the Post-Eighties Generation in Kashmir: Aspirations, Anxieties, and Future Trajectories

( Mohd. Aslam Bhat ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2018 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.6 No.2

Kashmir is a territorial dispute embedded in the politico-diplomatic events that shook the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The most immediate outcome of this dispute has been the human tragedy unfolding in Indian administered Kashmir, where a popular armed rebellion broke out in 1989. The brutalities of the rebellion reverberate across Kashmir, flashed in the common memories of people, especially the young who have been exposed to various socio-cultural vulnerabilities. Young Kashmiris have not known a stable and peaceful society and, therefore, rebelling has become part of the youth culture. They are politically hyper-engaged with more radical political views entailing revolutionary violence as a handy mechanism for preserving societal security, territorial fortification, and justice in Kashmir.

Dynamic Analysis of an Articulated Offshore Tower Using Stokes Fifth Order Nonlinear Wave Theory

Moazzam Aslam,Mohd Moonis Zaheer,Nazrul Islam 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.12

In offshore engineering, a compliant offshore structure accommodates dynamic forces by flexibility rather than rigidly withstanding load effects. As an alternative to conventional fixed platforms for loading/mooring in deep waters, articulated offshore towers are highly appealing because of their reduced structural weight. This study presents the results of a probabilistic random wave with and without current force on a 500 m high articulated tower with two hinges. By using the Lagrangian approach, governing nonlinear equations of motion are derived. The motion equation has been resolved in the time domain with the Houbolt approach. Based on Stokes fifth order nonlinear wave theory, wave forces have been assessed. Hydrodynamic forces are determined using a modified Morison equation with stretching modifications developed by Chakrabarti. The study examined two marine states, i.e., 10 m/10 sand 15 m/15 s. The current intensity of 2 m/sec has been taken into account. The salient statistical parameters such as maximum, minimum, mean, and standard deviation are presented under both the ocean environments. The proposed model is feasible for both the sea states. When comparing sea states, those with a greater wave height and period and those with a smaller wave height and period have more energy in their PSDs for all responses.

      • Aerodynamic behaviour of double hinged articulated loading platforms

        Zaheer, Mohd Moonis,Hasan, Syed Danish,Islam, Nazrul,Aslam, Moazzam Techno-Press 2021 Ocean systems engineering Vol.11 No.1

Articulated loading platforms (ALPs) belongs to a class of offshore structures known as compliant. ALP motions have time periods falling in the wind excitation frequency range due to their compliant behaviour. This paper deals with the dynamic behavior of a double hinged ALP subjected to low-frequency wind forces with random waves. Nonlinear effects due to variable submergence, fluctuating buoyancy, variable added mass, and hydrodynamic forces are considered in the analysis. The random sea state is characterized by the Pierson-Moskowitz (P-M) spectrum. The wave forces on the submerged elements of the platform's shaft are calculated using Morison's Equation with Airy's linear wave theory ignoring diffraction effects. The fluctuating wind load has been estimated using Ochi and Shin wind velocity spectrum for offshore structures. The nonlinear dynamic equation of motion is solved in the time domain by the Wilson-θ method. The wind-structure interactions, along with the effect of various other parameters on the platform response, are investigated. The effect of offset of aerodynamic center (A.C.) with the center of gravity (C.G.) of platform superstructure has also been investigated. The outcome of the analyses indicates that low-frequency wind forces affect the response of ALP to a large extent, which otherwise is not enhanced in the presence of only waves. The mean wind modifies the mean position of the platform surge response to the positive side, causing an offset. Various power spectral densities (PSDs) under high and moderate sea states show that apart from the significant peak occurring at the two natural frequencies, other prominent peaks also appear at very low frequencies showing the influence of wind on the response.

Proline nitrate ionic liquid as high temperature acid corrosion inhibitor for mild steel: Experimental and molecular-level insights

Ruby Aslam,Mohammad Mobin,Huda,Mohd Shoeb,Manilal Murmu,Priyabrata Banerjee 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.100 No.-

The synthesis of novel L-proline nitrate ionic liquid referred to as [Pro][NO3] (IL), was performed and the1H, 13C NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques were used to elucidate the chemical structure. Theinhibition properties of the [Pro][NO3] IL were evaluated for mild steel (MS) corrosion in 1 M HCl usinggravimetric measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization(PDP) measurement, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact anglemeasurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo(MC) simulation studies. As indicated by electrochemical and weight loss techniques the tested [Pro][NO3] IL was established as an excellent mixed type high-temperature acid corrosion inhibitor for MS; theoptimal temperature and concentration being 70 C and 300 ppm, respectively. Furthermore, the contactangle measurement and surface studies revealed water-repelling property and the protecting capability, respectively of the investigated inhibitor. The electronic property of [Pro][NO3] IL has been exploredusing density functional theory (DFT) and the sites susceptible for electron sharing were identifiedthrough Fukui indices analysis. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation based on the Monte Carlomethod has been employed to envisage the spontaneous adsorption of [Pro][NO3] IL on MS surface.

Drying Shrinkage Strain of Palm-oil By-products Lightweight Concrete: A Comparison between Experimental and Prediction Models

Muhammad Aslam,Payam Shafigh,Mohd Zamin Jumaat 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.22 No.12

Drying shrinkage in concrete can be attributed to loss of moisture, variations in temperature, and the chemical reactions of cement with water and carbon dioxide, is one of the most important parameters which affects the durability and service life of the concrete structures. Recently, the lightweight concrete has got a considerable attention to be used in structural applications. Although, this concrete has very high drying shrinkage compared to conventional concrete. Therefore, the design engineers need an accurate and precise estimation of the concrete shrinkage, so that the safe and durable structure can be produced. The main objective of this research is to compare the development of drying shrinkage strain of three concrete mixes made of by-product aggregate namely oil pam shell and oil-palm-boiler clinker from the palm oil industry with the prediction models. For that purpose, ten (ACI209R, EN1992, MC2010, CEB/ FIP1990, AASHTO-LRFD, GL2000, AS3600, JSCE, SAK and B3) prediction models of drying shrinkage have been selected from the standards, codes and researchers. All suggested parameters for the prediction models were considered in the estimation of shrinkage strain for the by-product concretes. In addition, the error percentage and coefficient of variation methods have been used to compute the accuracy of prediction models. The results showed that in early ages, almost all the prediction models estimated similar results with the experimental curves. However, at later ages, only few models for each concrete predicted similar results to the experimental values.

Spectrophotometric Investigation of Oxidation of Cefpodoxime Proxetil by Permanganate in Alkaline Medium: A Kinetic Study

        Khan, Aftab Aslam Parwaz,Mohd, Ayaz,Bano, Shaista,Siddiqi, K. S. Korean Chemical Society 2009 대한화학회지 Vol.53 No.6

A Kinetics pathway of oxidation of Cefpodoxime Proxetil by permanganate in alkaline medium at a constant ionic strength has been studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction showed first order kinetics in permanganate ion concentration and an order less than unity in cefpodoxime acid and alkali concentrations. Increasing ionic strength of the medium increase the rate. The oxidation reaction proceeds via an alkali-permanganate species which forms a complex with cefpodoxime acid. The latter decomposes slowly, followed by a fast reaction between a free radical of cefpodoxime acid and another molecule of permanganate to give the products. Investigations of the reaction at different temperatures allowed the determination of activation parameters with respect to the slow step of proposed mechanism and fallows first order kinetics. The proposed mechanism and the derived rate laws are consistent with the observed kinetics.
