        MicroRNA and Their Potential Role in Conjunctival Disorders

        MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are the small noncoding RNA molecules which regulate target gene expression posttranscriptionally. They are known to regulate key cellular processes like inflammation, cell differentiation, cell proliferation, and cell apoptosis across various ocular diseases. Due to their easier access, recent focus has been laid on the investigation of miRNA expression and their involvement in several conjunctival diseases. The aim of this narrative review is to provide understanding of the miRNAs and describe the current role of miRNAs as the mediators of the various conjunctival diseases. A literature search was made using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for studies involving miRNAs in the conjunctival pathological conditions. Original articles in the last 10 years involving both human and animal models were included. Literature search retrieved 27 studies matching our criteria. Pertaining to the numerous literatures, there is a strong correlation between miRNA and the various pathological conditions that occur in the conjunctiva. miRNAs are involved in various physiological processes such as cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, development, and inflammation by regulating various signaling pathways, genes, proteins, and mediators. Pterygium was the most studied conjunctival disease for miRNA involvement, whereas miRNA research in allergic conjunctivitis is still in its early stages. Our review provides deep insights into the various miRNAs playing an important role in the various conjunctival diseases. miRNAs do have the potential to serve as noninvasive biomarkers with diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications. However, multitudinous studies are required to validate miRNAs as the reliable biomarkers in conjunctival pathologies and its targeted therapy.

      • Definition of professionalism and tools for assessing professionalism in pharmacy practice: a systematic review

        PurposeIn contemporary pharmacy, the role of pharmacists has become more multifaceted, as they now handle a wider range of tasks and take more responsibility for providing patient care than 20 years ago. This evolution in pharmacists’ responsibilities has been accompanied by the need for pharmacists to display high-quality patient-centred care and counselling, and to demonstrate professionalism, which now needs to be taught and assessed as part of pharmacy education and practice. This study aimed at identifying definitions of professionalism in pharmacy practice and critically evaluating published instruments for assessing professionalism in pharmacy practice. MethodsWe searched the medical literature listed in Scopus, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2018. All papers meeting our selection criteria were reviewed and summarised into a clear review of professionalism requirements in pharmacy practice. Details of the instruments measuring professionalism were reviewed in detail. ResultsThere is no accepted simple definition of professionalism, although we identified several theoretical and policy frameworks required for professional pharmaceutical practice. We identified 4 instruments (the Behavioural Professionalism Assessment Instrument, Lerkiatbundit’s instrument, the Pharmacy Professionalism Instrument, and the Professionalism Assessment Tool that build on these frameworks and measure professional practice in pharmacy students. These were found to be reliable and valid, but had only been used and tested in student populations. ConclusionGiven the increasingly broad role of community pharmacists, there is a need for assessments of professionalism in practice. Professionalism is a complex concept that is challenging to measure because it has no standardised definition and the existing literature related to the topic is limited. Currently available instruments focus on measuring the development of the elements of professionalism among pharmacy students, rather than pharmacists.

        Enhancement of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Efficiency using Carbon Nanotube/TiO2 Nanocomposite Thin Films Fabricated at Various Annealing Temperatures

        To increase energy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to TiO2 gel-like solution. Modified acid-catalyzed sol-gel method was used with the doctor blade coating technique to obtain thin films of CNT/TiO2 nanocomposite photoanode. CNT/TiO2 paste was applied onto the conductive glass to generate a 0.25 cm2 active area which was later annealed at 350°C, 450°C, and 550°C for 60 min. Characterization of the CNT/TiO2 paste was performed using x-ray diffraction. Results showed that the crystalline phase of the particles was anatase. The micrograph obtained using field emission scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the pastes are highly porous. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis was performed to determine the CNT/TiO2 surface area and particle size. The DSSC with the CNT/TiO2 photoanodes annealed at 550°C showed the highest incident photon-to-charge carrier efficiency value of 0.95% compared with the DSSCs with photoanodes annealed at 350°C and 450°C (0.70% and 0.83%, respectively). The observed efficiencies of the DSSCs with CNT/TiO2 photoanode annealed at the three different temperatures were 2.62%, 2.65%, and 3.13%. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the DSSCs with photoanodes developed using the highest annealing temperature (550°C) have higher electron lifetime of 70.423 ms and lower effective recombination rate of 1.42 × 10−2 s−1, thereby improving the performance of CNT/TiO2 DSSCs.

        The Effect of COVID-19 on Investment Decisions in Saudi Stock Market

        In this study, the response to the COVID-19 global pandemic by the Saudi financial market is discussed. Using panel data and pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), it is seen that the increase in COVID-19 verified cases has led to adverse reactions by the stock market. This can be determined through related stock market returns data from March 3rd, 2020 to December 9th, 2020, which shows that, during this period, stock market returns declined as numbers of registered cases grew. In addition, further observation reveals that stock markets took a more dynamic stance towards the rise in confirmed non-fatal cases as opposed to that of virus-related fatalities. Furthermore, it is noticed that when the degree of restriction of lockdown increases, the impact of Brent crude oil price return on Saudi stock market return decreases. Thus, the suggestion is that investors should not use Brent oil return as an indicator of Saudi stock return during a complete lockdown. Moreover, the rise of lockdown restrictions and the number of confirmed cases leads to more fluctuation in the Saudi stock market return. Overall, our findings indicate that financial markets are swiftly reacting to this destructive virus but this response differs according to different outbreak stages.

        Characterization of TixZn(1−x)Al2O4 Thin Films by Sol-gel Method for GPS Patch antennae

        The need for miniaturization and weight reduction of a GPS patch antennae has forced scientiststo search for new microwave dielectric materials. The sol-gel method was used to prepareTixZn(1−x)Al2O4-based microwave dielectric ceramic thin films (x = 0.00, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.30) andto fabricate a GPS patch antennae. The phases of ZnAl2O4 and TiO2 co-exist with each otherand form a two-phase system, which is confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns andthe Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis. The addition of titanium dioxide (TiO2)increased the crystallite size, grain size, surface roughness and apparent density. A material witha higher density tends to increase the dielectric constant ("r), which is suitable for miniaturizationof a GPS patch antenna. As the TiO2 content increased, the "r values increased linearly. Finally,GPS patch antennae were successfully fabricated using the ZnAl2O4 and Ti0.30Zn0.70Al2O4 material. The performances and the operating frequencies of the GPS patch antennae were measuredusing a PNA series network analyzer. The result showed that both patch antennae resonated atfrequency of 1.570 GHz and gave a return loss less than −10 dB. The optimal performance of theGPS patch antennae was obtained from the specimen using Ti0.30Zn0.70Al2O4 ("r 14.57, widebandwidth of 240 MHz and low return loss of −34.5 dB), which meets the requirements of GPSapplications.

        LOCATIONS OF OUT-OF-PLANE EQUILIBRIUM POINTS IN THE ELLIPTIC RESTRICTED THREE-BODY PROBLEM UNDER RADIATION AND OBLATENESS EFFECTS

        This study deals with the generalization of the Elliptic Restricted Three-Body Problem (ER3BP) by considering the effects of radiation and oblate spheroid primaries. This may illustrate a gas giant exoplanet orbiting its host star with eccentric orbit. In the three dimensional case, this generalization may possess two additional equilibrium points ($L_{6,7}$, out-of-plane). We determine the existence of $L_{6,7}$ in ER3BP under the effects of radiation (bigger primary) and oblateness (small primary). We analytically derive the locations of $L_{6,7}$ and assume initial approximations of (${\mu}-1$, ${\pm}\sqrt{3A_2}$), where ${\mu}$ and $A_2$ are the mass parameter and oblateness factor, respectively. The fixed locations are then determined. Our results show that the locations of $L_{6,7}$ are periodic and affected by $A_2$ and the radiation factor ($q_1$).

        Expression, phosphorylation, localization, and microtubule binding of tau in colorectal cell lines

        Tau is a microtubule-associated protein that causes proper role of neuron by assembling and stabilizing microtubules. The amount and post translational modification of tau can change its function as a stabilizer of microtubules. The aim of the study was to look for the expression of tau in colorectal cancer and normal cells, along with phosphorylation and microtubule binding properties of tau expressed in colorectal cancer cell. Two colorectal cancer cells (SW480 and HCT 116) expressed tau that was also phosphorylated, whereas the others (Caco-2, HT-29 and DLD1) did not. Colorectal normal cell (CCD-18Co) expressed very tiny amount of tau that was not phosphorylated. A big fraction of tau in HCT 116 did not bind to microtubule. The results suggest that some colorectal cancer cells express hyperphosphorylated tau as found in Alzheimer’s disease. So, tau in colorectal cancer cells does not look like same as tau in normal adult brain; rather it works nearly same as tau in neurodegenerative disease.

        Determination of Optimal Weld Parameter for Joining Titanium Alloys by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding using Taguchi Method

        The optimal parameters for joining two different titanium alloys were determined by the Taguchi method and applied in similar and dissimilar joining of conventional Ti-6Al-4V and newly developed Ti-3Al-2.5V alloys. The microstructures of the two alloys and their mechanical properties were comparatively evaluated at the optimal parameters. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy showed a larger back bead width than that of Ti-3Al-2.5V under similar heat input, because of its lower thermal conductivity and higher specific heat capacity. The welded zone of Ti-3Al-2.5V contained a retained beta phase, which was absent in that of Ti-6Al-4V. This indicates that the transformation of the Ti-3Al-2.5V weld metal starts above the martensite temperature, while it starts below the martensite temperature for Ti-6Al-4V. The failure of the welded specimen occurred in the base metal for both the titanium alloys, which indicates the superior weld quality. However, the welded Ti-6Al-4V showed superior tensile strength to that of the Ti-3Al-2.5V weld under optimal conditions, owing the high beta phase fraction in its base metal. Meanwhile, it showed inferior ductility to that of Ti-3Al-2.5V because of its coarser beta phase.
