      • An energy efficient use of data centres for ship-pattern analysis

        In order to optimising the sea traffic network efficiency, improving the safety of shipping and the protection of the environment, it is useful to model the sea network and its spatio-temporal characteristics of the ship patterns. These maritime patterns could also be an a-priori set of knowledge for the upcoming Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) which are starting to navigate our seas with or without remote human controls. The above concepts are crucial and essential elements for defining and understanding the Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA). Nowadays the applied methodologies for modelling the maritime traffic use large scale of database for extracting the patterns. The Knowledge Discovery from Data (KDD), strictly connected with Data Mining (DM) is growing significantly to modelling the behaviour of the vessels in relations to their surroundings. This is just one example that confirms the growing up of the cloud computing usage for maritime applications too. Besides these applications there are also a continuous and fast evolution of the IT services, which more often than not means data centre scale-ups with consequent improve of power consumptions. This paper is a case study based on real world data assessing a multi-objective energy consumption analysis. It is based on the comparison between the traditional air conditioning structures known as Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and the Free Cooling Technique (FCT) in order to reduce the data centre power consumption keeping the same number of computational calculations performed.

      • Fine-grained Boat Classification using Convolutional Neural Networks

        The use of radar-based systems for vessel monitoring is not suitable in populated areas, due to the high electromagnetic emissions. In this paper, a camera based vessel recognition system for application in the context of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and Homeland Protection (HP) is proposed. Our approach is designed to extend the functionality of traditional VTS systems by permitting the classification of both cooperative and non-cooperative targets, using camera images only. This allows enhancing the surveillance function in populated areas, where public opinion is strongly concerned about electromagnetic emissions and therefore antennas are suspiciously observed and radars are not allowed. Experiments have been carried out on a publicly available data set of images coming from the ARGOS boat traffic monitoring system in the City of Venice (Italy). The obtained classification accuracy of 89.6% (with 11 different classes of boats) demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

      • How Does Prior Information Affect Analyst Forecast Herding?

        This research uses four different measures of bold to investigate how prior information affects analyst herding decisions. Results for the more restrictive measures of bold suggest that the probability of herding is greater with large information shocks. Evidence also shows that analysts are more likely to herd in their forecast revisions when their current outstanding forecasts deviate more from the consensus mean and in the presence of strong observable signals. In general, analysts with current outstanding forecasts that are optimistic are more likely to issue revised forecasts that are also optimistic.

      • Chinese Classics in Matteo Ricci’s 天主实义 and its reception in Korea

        Matteo Ricci’s (利?? 1552-1610) 天主?? (“The true meaning of the Lord of Heaven”) is “an unrivalled example of meeting between Chinese Classics and Christianity” but also marks the beginning of the acceptance of Christianity in Korea. Yi Su-gwang known as Jibong (1563-1628), one of the leading figures of the time, introduced in Korea both Western and Catholic knowledge, through the mediation of the Confucian Chinese books of Matteo Ricci and his friends. The 天主?? was explicitly written in dialogue with Confucianism and all the main topics of the treatise are presented in connection with the Chinese Classics: the existence of God; the human soul; the debate whether the soul is some energy or it is spirit; the issue of reincarnation; the cultivation of moral virtue; the connection between actions, intention and reward; the goodness of human nature.

        문자 음성변환(Text-to-Speech) 프로그램 적용이 초등학교 3학년 학생들의 읽기 이해및 읽기 독립성에 미치는 영향

        이 연구의 목적은 읽기 과제에서의 문자 음성변환(Text-to-Speech) 프로그램 적용이 초등학교 3학년 학생들의 읽기 이해및 읽기 독립성에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이었다. 이 연구에서 독립변인은 읽기 과제를 위한 문자 음성변환 프로그램의 적용이었고, 종속변인들은 읽기 이해능력 및 읽기 독립성이었다. 총 36명의 초등학교 3학년 학생들이 각각 18명씩 실험집단과 통제집단에 나누어져 실험에 참여 하였으며, 실험 집단에 속한 학생들은 연구 이전에 프로그램에 관한 설명과 간단한 연습을 통하여 문지음성변환 프로그램에 친숙해지도록 하였다. 통제집단에 속한 학생들은 실험집단에 속한 학생들과 동일한 읽기 자료를 활용하였으나 문자 음성변환 프로그램을 사용하지 않았다. 학생들의 사전 읽기 능력의 차이가 존재하는 지 알아보기 위하여 사전 읽기 능력 검사를 실시하였으며, 그 후 사후 읽기 능력 검사를 실시하여 실험집단 학생들과 통제집단 학생들의 차이를 분석하였다. 학생들의 읽기 독립성은 각 학생이 읽기 과제를 수행하는 동안 도움 요청이 있는 경우를 기록하여 측정하였다. 사전 검사 결과와 사후 검사 결과는 독립표본 t 검증을 통하여 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 문자 음성변환 프로그램을 사용하여 읽기 과제를 수행한 3학년 학생들이프로그램을 사용하지 않은 3학년 학생들에 비해 높은 사후 읽기 검사 점수를 받았으며 그 차이는 유의미 하였다. 그러나 두 집단간 읽기 독립성에 있어서의 유의미한 차이는 발견되지 않았다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of text-to-speech(TTS) program on third grade students reading comprehension and their independence while working on assignments. The independent variable was the integrtion of TTS program in reading, and the dependent variables included reading comprehension and learning independence. Two groups with 18 third grade students in each participated in this study. The experimental group received two training sessions, a demonstration session and hands-on session, to familiarize them with the TTS program and studied reading comprehension passages using the program. The control group studied the same reading passages without utilizing the TTS program. A pre reading comprehension test was administered to ensure prior reading equivalency between the experimental group and the control group. Then the post reading comprehension test was conducted to examine if there is any statistical difference between the experimental group and the control group. Student independence was assessed by counting tallies of aid requests for each participant during the reading task. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test for both pretest scores and posttest scores. The results showed that the pretest scores between the two groups were not significantly different. However, third grade students who used the TTS program in reading outperformed the students in the control group when comparing the posttest scores. Student learning independence was not significantly different between the two groups.

      • A Permissioned ISPs Blockchain For The End to End Quality of Service Enhancement

        In this work we designed a permissioned ISP blcokchain for the end to end(e2e) quality of service (QoS) enhancement that shall be framed in an Internet Service Provider (ISP) cooperative scenario. The designed blockchain is able to store users’ connection data, in those connections where a lack of Quality of Service is experienced. Those data will be retrieved from the Networks Management System(MMS), and in some specific cases can be retrieved from the Software Defined Networks (SDN) controllers, of the ISPs chaining scenario that we recently proposed. We designed the blockchain and we defined the smart contract by using Hyperledger Fabric.

      • A Blockchain For The Collision Avoidance And The Recovery of Crashed UAVs

        The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are a specific type of drones that have a large use nowadays, but which is subject to strict rules country specific. The sensors that equip the UAVs permit to perform several tasks, ranging from geolocalization to identification of objects or measurement of temperature. In several specific cases the UAVs are employed for the patrol of zones difficult or dangerous to reach, or simply far from where a human being is able to rescue a crashed one in case of an accident. It must be pointed out the possibility of crashes, due to several causes. In our work we are proposing the design of a blockchain for the collision avoidance and the recovery of crashed UAVs.

      • A study on QoS improvements in low latency applications using Next Generation Networks and Blockchain

        Low latency services have strict requirements that should be met to avoid bad Quality of Service (QoS) for the end users. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are widely used to provide these kinds of services. The high amount of traffic generated by CDN represents a challenge to face for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), that are required to respond to highly variable traffic demands. The adoption of network paradigms such as the Software Defined Network (SDN) and the Information Centric Network (ICN) has been widely explored in literature in order to solve QoS related problems. In this work, first we analyzed a number of solutions to mitigate this problem, then we examined those approaches where the integration of the blockchain technology and these network paradigms have been proposed. We finally resume our investigation results providing a table including the works taken into consideration.
