      • Multilayered co-electrospun scaffold containing silver sulfadiazine as a prophylactic against osteomyelitis: Characterization and biological <i>in vitro</i> evaluations

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Bone related-bacterial diseases including wound infections and osteomyelitis (OM) still remain a serious problem. In this study, a hybrid co-electrospun membrane consisting of gelatin (GE) and Poly(<SMALL>D</SMALL>,<SMALL>L</SMALL>-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) fibrous sheets containing different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1wt%) of silver sulfadiazine (AgSD) was designed to provide for improved antimicrobial effect and biocompatibility. Well-defined products were characterized by physicochemical analyses. For biological <I>in vitro</I> assessments, mouse osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the scaffolds. This test was done in order to assay for cytotoxicity by measuring cell proliferation. Antibacterial activity against gram-negative <I>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</I> (<I>P. aeruginosa</I>), gram-positive <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> (<I>S. aureus</I>), and Methicillin-resistant <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> (MRSA) was also tested. These biological tests showed that GE/PLGA-AgSD scaffolds had good cell viability, as well as effective antimicrobial activity. These remarkable results suggest that GE/PLGA-AgSD scaffolds possess great potential for the treatment of OM and can find many uses in the field of bone tissue engineering.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The hybrid nanofiber was well-fabricated to different of two polymers using co-electrospun system. </LI> <LI> The presence of silver sulfadiazine and silver ion release from the co-electrospun nanofiber was clearly proved. </LI> <LI> The developed co-electrospun nanofiber showed not only excellent antibacterial effect, but also low cytotoxicity through <I>in vitro</I> tests. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Preparation of mechanically enhanced hydrogel scaffolds by incorporating interfacial polymer nanorods for nerve electrode application

        <P>Hydrogel-based integral nerve electrodes have been studied as an effective implant strategy for recovery after a spinal cord injury (SCI). However, a weak physical connection between the hydrogel and nerve electrode can lead to implant failure. In this study, we introduce poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) nanorods (PLANRs) as a new approach to improve the physical property, i.e. stability of agarose hydrogel-based integrated neuro-electrodes. The hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), rheometry, and tensile test machine. Thus, the hydrogels containing PLANRs displayed high mechanical properties. These interesting findings suggest that PLANRs enhance the mechanical properties of integral nerve electrode hydrogels making them useful materials in neural tissue engineering.</P>

        Design and Performance Evaluation of GPS Spoofing Signal Detection Algorithm at RF Spoofing Simulation Environment

        In this study, an algorithm that detects a spoofing signal for a GPS L1 signal was proposed, and the performance was verified through RF spoofing signal simulation. The proposed algorithm determines the reception of a spoofing signal by detecting a correlation distortion of GPS L1 C/A code caused by the spoofing signal. To detect the correlation distortion, a detection criterion of a spoofing signal was derived from the relationship among the Early, Prompt, and Late tap correlation values of a receiver correlator; and a detection threshold was calculated from the false alarm probability of spoofing signal detection. In this study, an RF spoofing environment was built using the GSS 8000 simulator (Spirent). For the RF spoofing signal generated from the simulator, the RF spoofing environment was verified using the commercial receiver DL-V3 (Novatel Inc.). To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the RF signal was stored as IF band data using a USRP signal collector (NI) so that the data could be processed by a CNU software receiver (software defined radio). For the performance of the proposed algorithm, results were obtained using the correlation value of the software receiver, and the performance was verified through the detection of a spoofing signal and the detection time of a spoofing signal.

        Korean Cancer Patients’ Awareness of Clinical Trials, Perceptions on the Benefit and Willingness to Participate

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>The purpose of this study was to assess current levels of awareness of clinical trials (CTs), perceptions regarding their benefits and willingness to participate to CTs among Korean cancer patients.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>From December 2012 to August 2015, we distributed questionnaires to cancer patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapy at Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>A total of 397 out of 520 requested patients (76.3%) responded to the survey. Among the 397 patients, 62.5% were female and the median age was 52 years. Overall, 97.4% (387/397) answered that they have at least heard of CTs. When asked about their level of awareness, 23.8% (92/387) answered that they could more than roughly explain about CTs. The average visual analogue scale score of CT benefit in all patients was 6.43 (standard deviation, 2.20). Patients who were only familiar with the term without detailed knowledge of the contents had the least expectation of benefit from CTs (p=0.015). When asked about their willingness to participate in CTs, 56.7% (225/397) answered positively. Patients with higher levels of awareness of CTs showed higher willingness to participate (p < 0.001). Heavily treated patients and patients with previous experience regarding CTs also showed a higher willingness to participate (p < 0.001). The perceived benefit of CTs was higher in the group willing to participate (p=0.026).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The patient’s level of awareness regarding CTs was positively related to the positive perception and willingness to participate. Although the general awareness of CTs was high, a relatively large proportion of patients did not have accurate knowledge; therefore, proper and accurate patient education is necessary.</P>

        Considerations for Design and Implementation of a RF Emitter Localization System with Array Antennas

        In this paper, design and implementation issues for a network-oriented RF emitter localization system with array antenna are discussed. For hardware, the problem of array mismatch and RF/IF channel mismatch are introduced and the calibration schemes for solving those problems are also provided. For software, it is explained how to overcome the drawback of conventional MUltiple Signal Identification and Classification (MUSIC) algorithm in a point of identifying the number of received signals and problems such as Data Association Problem and Ghost Node Problem in regard to multiple emitter localization are presented with some approaches for getting around those problems. Finally, for implementation, a criterion for arranging each of sensors and a requirement for alignment of array antenna' orientation are also given.

        GalaxySite: ligand-binding-site prediction by using molecular docking

        <P>Knowledge of ligand-binding sites of proteins provides invaluable information for functional studies, drug design and protein design. Recent progress in ligand-binding-site prediction methods has demonstrated that using information from similar proteins of known structures can improve predictions. The GalaxySite web server, freely accessible at http://galaxy.seoklab.org/site, combines such information with molecular docking for more precise binding-site prediction for non-metal ligands. According to the recent critical assessments of structure prediction methods held in 2010 and 2012, this server was found to be superior or comparable to other state-of-the-art programs in the category of ligand-binding-site prediction. A strong merit of the GalaxySite program is that it provides additional predictions on binding ligands and their binding poses in terms of the optimized 3D coordinates of the protein–ligand complexes, whereas other methods predict only identities of binding-site residues or copy binding geometry from similar proteins. The additional information on the specific binding geometry would be very useful for applications in functional studies and computer-aided drug discovery.</P>

        The Effectiveness of a Predictor-corrector Technique in European Currency Option Valuation

        In this work, we adopt a predictor-corrector technique to examine the accuracy of the Fractional Black-Scholes (FBS) model. Compared to the standard Black-Scholes (B-S) model, FBS model involves one additional parameter, a Hurst value (H) providing information whether the time series exhibits persistent or anti-persistent behavior. The FBS model, as a result, has been shown to provide more accurate predictions of option price [Heo et al. (2017) and reference therein]. Estimation accuracy of volatility and H values are key to better option price estimates. However, volatility and Hurst values are unknown prior to the closing time; consequently, the estimation of option prices relies heavily on the accuracy of volatilities and Hurst parameter estimation. In this study we compare option price estimation accuracy using three variations of calculating H values, and two volatility measures. We estimate two H values using historic data using one-month data (21 trading days) and three-month data (63 trading days), respectively, and by using predicted volatility estimates obtained using a binomial method, as a predictor and then used them to estimate implied H values. We subsequently correct the predicted volatility measure using the implied H value, the predictor-corrector technique. We investigate the accuracy of these FBS models and examine effectiveness of this predictor-corrector technique using Euro currency option (XDE) data traded in NASDAQ from November 2007 to June 2016.

        MEMS 및 대용량 저장 장치의 소형화 및 저가격 추세는 다양한 개인용 응용서비스 확산의 계기가 되었으면 이로 인하여 이동형 휴먼라이프 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 환경이 조성되고 있다. 이같은 서비스가 용이하게 제공 되기 위해서는 사용자의 일상 생활 정보를 효율적으로 수집하고 저장할 수 있는 센싱 기술이 필요하다. 기존의 관련된 기술의 대부분은 특정 센서를 사용자 신체의 여러 부위에 부착하는 방식을 사용하고 있어 사용자의 정확한 행위 센싱 데이터를 얻을 수 있는 장점을 가지고 있으나 인체를 많이 구속해야 하는 불편함이 따른다. 이러한 점을 개선하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 다양한 센서를 한 모듈로 통합하여 사용자의 신체구속을 적게 하면서도 일상 생활에서 행위 인지를 위한 센싱데이터를 효율적으로 수집하여 저장할 수 있는 멀티센서 기반 모바일 행위인지 센서로거(MASoL : Mobile Activity Sensor Logger) 개발에 관한 경험을 기술 한다.

        Mechanism of Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide-Induced Catecholamine Secretion from the Rat Adrenal Medulla

        <P> The present study was attempted to investigate the effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) on secretion of catecholamines (CA) and to establish whether there is the existence of a noncholinergic mechanism in adrenomedullary CA secretion from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland. The perfusion into an adrenal vein of VIP (3⁓10<SUP>⁣6 </SUP>M) for 5 min or the injection of acetylcholine (ACh, 5.32⁓10<SUP>⁣3 </SUP>M) resulted in great increases in CA secretion. Tachyphylaxis to releasing effect of CA evoked by VIP was not observed by the repeated perfusion. The net increase in adrenal CA secretion evoked by VIP still remained unaffected in the presence of atropine or chlorisondamine. However, the CA release in response to ACh was greatly inhibited by the pretreatment with atropine or chlorisondamine. The releasing effects of CA evoked by either VIP or ACh were depressed by pretreatment with nicardipine, TMB-8, and the perfusion of Ca<SUP>2⁢</SUP>-free medium. Moreover, VIP- as well as ACh-evoked CA secretory responses were markedly inhibited under the presence of (Lys<SUP>1</SUP>, Pro<SUP>2.5</SUP>, Arg<SUP>3.4</SUP>, Tyr<SUP>6</SUP>)-VIP or naloxone. CA secretory responses induced by ACh and high K<SUP>⁢</SUP> (5.6⁓10<SUP>⁣2 </SUP>M) were potentiated by infusion of VIP (3⁓10<SUP>⁣6</SUP>M for 5 min). Taken together, these experimental results indicate that VIP causes CA release in a fashion of calcium ion -dependence, suggesting strongly that there exists a noncholinergic mechanism that may be involved in the regulation of adrenomedullary CA secretion through VIP receptors in the rat adrenal gland, and that VIP may be the noncholinergic excitatory secretagogue present in the chromaffin cells.
