Lee,Kang,In,Jun-Gyo,Yu,Chang-Yeon,Yun,Song-Joong,Min,Byung-Hoon,Rho,Yeong-Deok,Kim,Moo-Sung,Yang,Deok-Chun 한국자원식물학회 2004 Plant Resources Vol.7 No.3
To investigate the defense mechanism against the abiotic stress, a cDNA clone encoding a CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) protein was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from tabroot mRNAs of Codonopsis lanceolata. The eDNA, designated ClSODCc, is 799 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 459 bp with a deduced amino acid sequence of 152 residues. The deduced amino acid sequence of ClSODCc matched to the previously reported CuZnSODs. Consensus amino acid residues (His-45, -47, -62, -70, -79, -119 and Asp-82) were involved in Cu-, Cu/Zn-, and Zn- binding ligands. The deduced amino acid sequence of ClSODCc showed high homologies (82%-86%) regardless of species. Expression of ClSODCc by oxidative stress was increased up to 1 h after treatment and declined gradually. Much earlier and stronger expression of ClSODCc was observed in the cold stress treatment.

Background: Postmarketing surveillance is conducted to establish drug safety and effectiveness under real practice. Objectives: To validate ustekinumab’s effectiveness and safety in the treatment of adult Korean patients with plaque psoriasis under real practice. Methods: This was a prospective, observational, and multi-center study. The study subjects were aged 18 years and above, who were administered ustekinumab for treating plaque psoriasis. Results: The study included 977 patients; 66.9% were male, with a mean±standard deviation of BSA(%) of 27.0±18.3 and mean PASI of 18.1±9.7. The effectiveness analysis included 581 patients who had at least one follow-up assessment and met treatment criteria per local label and reimbursement guidelines; of these patients, 287 had effectiveness data for visit 6. The timing of visit 6 occurred at 53.7±2.1, weeks; at visit 6 91.6%, 51.2%, and 9.4% achieved PASI75, PASI90, and PASI100 responses, respectively. Adverse events (AEs) occurred in 11.5% yielding an incidence rate of 21.5/100 patient-years (PYs). Serious AEs occurred in 0.8% with an incidence rate of 1.2/100 PYs. The estimated 1-year drug retention rate was 87.7%. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that higher baseline PASI score and no prior biologic exposure were significant predictors for PASI90 response at visit 6. Conclusion: Ustekinumab is effective and safe, with high drug retention in the treatment of adult Korean patients with plaque psoriasis in real-world practice.

<P>Inflammation in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is one of the characteristics of virus-induced peripheral neuropathy. In this inflammatory response, Schwann cells are actively involved. Previously, toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) was reported as a receptor for double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) that induces antiviral and inflammatory responses in cells of the innate immune system. In this study, we investigated the expression and putative role of TLR3 in Schwann cells. TLR3 was constitutively expressed in Schwann cells. Stimulation with polyinosinic–polycytidylic acid, a synthetic dsRNA analogue, induced the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene in Schwann cells. Studies on the intracellular signal transduction pathways using iSC, an immortalized Schwann cell line, revealed that dsRNA induces the activation of NF-κB, p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). The activation of NF-κB, p38, JNK, and dsRNA-dependent protein kinase is required for dsRNA-mediated iNOS gene expression. However, the activation of PI3 kinase and GSK-3β inhibited iNOS gene induction, a process mediated by their inhibitory effects on NF-κB and p38 activation. dsRNA-induced NO production caused neuronal cell death in cultured dorsal root ganglion. Finally, the introduction of dsRNA into the rat sciatic nerve induced iNOS gene expression and peripheral nerve demyelination in vivo. Taken together, these data suggest that viral RNA may induce inflammatory Schwann cell activation via TLR3 and peripheral nerve damage in the PNS. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

<P>We report high-performance of ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (FETs) based on the low band gap copolymers of pDPPT2NAP-HD and pDPPT2NAP-OD. The polymers are composed of electron-rich 2,6-di(thienyl)naphthalene (T2NAP) and electron-deficient diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) units with branched alkyl chains of 2-hexyldecyl (HD) or 2-octyldodecyl (OD). The polymers were polymerized via Suzuki coupling, yielding optical band gaps of ∼1.4 eV. In the transistor performance test, we observed good ambipolar transport behavior in both polymer films, and pDPPT2NAP-OD displayed hole and electron mobilities 1 order of magnitude higher than the corresponding properties of pDPPT2NAP-HD. Thermal annealing of the polymer films increased the carrier mobilities. Annealing at 150 °C provided optimal conditions yielding saturated film crystallinity and maximized carrier mobility. The highest hole and electron mobilities achieved in these polymers were 1.3 and 0.1 cm2/(V s), respectively, obtained from pDPPT2NAP-OD. The polymer structure and thermal annealing affected the carrier mobility, and this effect was investigated by fully characterizing the polymer films by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments. The GIXD data revealed that both polymers formed highly crystalline films with edge-on orientation. pDPPT2NAP-OD, which included longer alkyl chains, showed a higher tendency to form long-range order among the polymer chains. Thermal annealing up to 150 °C improved the polymer film crystallinity and promoted the formation of longer-range lamellar structures. AFM and TEM images of the films were consistent with the GI-XD data. Theoretical calculations of the polymer structures provided a rationale for the relationship between the torsional angle between aromatic rings and the carrier mobility. From the intensive electrical measurements and full characterizations, we find that the chemical structure of polymer backbone and side alkyl chain has a profound effect on film crystallinity, morphology, and transistor properties.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2012/jpccck.2012.116.issue-50/jp309213h/production/images/medium/jp-2012-09213h_0011.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jp309213h'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seeding dates on the yield and feed value of whole-crop barley cultivated in paddy soil. The field experiment was conceived as a randomized block design performed in triplicate with seeding dates of Oct. 19 (T1 as treatment 1), Oct. 26 (T2 as treatment 2), Nov. 2 (T3 as treatment 3), Nov. 9 (T4 as treatment 4), and Nov. 16 (T5 as treatment 5) as treatments. The barley grown in all treatments was harvested on May 21 of the following year. Plant length, fresh yield, dry matter yield, and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield were higher (p < 0.05) in barley with early seeding dates, whereas crude protein and ether extract were higher (p < 0.05) with late seeding dates. Crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber were highest in the T3 treatment and lowest in the T1 treatment. There was no significant difference between acid detergent fiber and TDN among the different seeding dates. Total mineral contents were higher in the order T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 (p < 0.05), whereas the total amino acid content increased significantly (p < 0.05) with a delay in seeding date. Free sugar contents (fructose, glucose, and sucrose) were higher with early seeding dates (p < 0.05). Collectively, the results obtained in this study indicate that it is favorable to seed soon after harvesting rice to increase dry matter and TDN yields and mineral and free sugar contents of whole-crop barley in the midlands of Korea.

Purpose: This is a report on the outcomes associated with a consecutive series of 1,000 cementless hip arthroplasties utilizing the Bencox® hip stem-the first Korean-developed hip prosthesis. Materials and Methods: A consecutive series of 1,000 hip arthroplasties using the Bencox® hip stem were analyzed, starting from its initial release (September 2006) until June 2014. Patients in this consecutive series underwent surgery for fractures (n=552), arthritis (n=155), avascular necrosis (n=209), and revisions (n=84). Of these 1,000 cases, patients with a minimum follow-up of at least 1 year (n=616) were retrospectively analyzed for radiographic and clinical outcomes (i.e., Harris hip score). The stability of the prosthesis was evaluated by examining subsidence. Results: During the follow-up period (mean follow-up period of 54.8 months), there were 2 cases requiring revision of the femoral stem-both were caused by periprosthetic fractures and neither involved stem loosening. The mean Harris hip score during follow-up was 95.5. Bone ongrowth occurred in 95% of patients; no cases of subsidence or aseptic loosening of the stem were detected, and no cases of postoperative complications such as ceramic breakage were observed. Conclusion: Clinical and radiographic evaluations of hip arthroplasty using the Bencox® hip stem revealed excellent outcomes with an average of 54.8 month follow-up in a consecutive series of 1,000 cases.

A decrease in pass ratio of Korean exporting pears causes several negative effects including an increase in pesticide dependency. In this study, we attempted to establish the pest forecasting management system, composed of weekly field forecasting by pear farmers, meteorological data obtained by automatic weather station (AWS), newly designed internet web page (http://pearpest.jnu.ac.kr/) as information collecting and providing ground, and information providing service. The weekly field forecasting information on major pear diseases and pests was collected from the forecasting team composed of five team leaders from each pear exporting complex. Further, an abridged weather information for the prediction of an infestation of major disease (pear scab) and pest (pear psylla and scale species) was obtained from an AWS installed at Bonghwang in Naju City. Such information was then promptly uploaded on the web page and also publicized to the pear famers specializing in export. We hope this pest forecasting management system increases the pass ratio of Korean exporting pears throughout establishment of famer-oriented forecasting, inspiring famers` effort for the prevention and forecasting of diseases and pests occurring at pear orchards.

<P>The major degradation issues of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are associated with the oxide scale growth and Cr evaporation of the metallic interconnect. To address these challenges, a highly dense spinel oxide coating was fabricated on a ferritic stainless steel interconnect using a cost-competitive ceramic processing route. The nano-scale Mn1.5Co1.5O4 spinel powder was synthesized using a glycine-nitrate method, and the particle agglomerates were effectively disintegrated by a high-energy attrition milling process. The spinel protective coating, which was applied by screen printing, was sintered to a nearly full density, without causing damage to the metallic substrate, by a high-temperature annealing process in a reducing environment, followed by re-oxidation at a moderate temperature. The dense spinel coating remarkably reduced the growth rate of chromia scale and restrained the evaporation of chromium species, as verified by area specific resistance (ASR) measurements and analysis on chromium distribution over the cross-section. Strong adhesion between the coating and substrate was confirmed after 500-hour operation. The sintering mechanism involved in reduction-oxidation heat-treatment was studied based on dilatometry measurements and microstructural features. The implication of the ASR change and the chromium migration for stability of practical SOFC stacks was discussed in detail.</P>
